Speaking as an armchair critic who repeatedly watched TOS reruns as a kid on network television (yes, I’m that old) and has been a Trekkie all my life, and considering I haven’t seen quite a bit of SNW since I don’t have Paramount+ and refuse to pay for yet another streaming service, and purely based on what I can piece together from Tumblr…

I just don’t get this Spock. Don’t get me wrong…I am not bashing him or any of his love interests. If he wants to get nasty with everyone on the Enterprise and half the Alpha quadrant, then, you go my horny lil Vulcan!

But you canNOT tell me this is pre-TOS Spock. He is so different from TOS Spock and there’s too many inexplicable plot holes and inconsistencies (hi, yes, this definitely includes La’an. WDYM she’s never referenced in Space Seed?). I do like SNW’s version as a separate entity though. Indeed. Gimme all the Spock’s! *grabby hands* I, personally, am not a TOS purist. I love AOS Spock, too. So there. I am both greedy and flexible like that. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyway, I see three possibilities.

1. SNW IS an alternate timeline/universe. Cool. I can deal with that. In fact, the more universes and timelines the merrier, I say. Everything is canon and everything is possible!

2. Something SO terrible happens here that Spock forevermore chooses to never become romantically involved again. Not cool. I don’t like to see any version of Spock suffer. (Well, unless it’s in fanfic and everything ends happily. IYKYK)

3. He goes completely starry-eyed for Jim by the time Kirk becomes captain, which effectively ends his romantic wanderings. Whether it’s truly romantic in nature or not, it doesn’t even matter really. But I want to know WHY, and I mean why canonically, not fanonically. (Ha. I made a word.)

Is there a secret fourth option I am unaware of?

I just finished Star Trek: The New Voyages, and while it’s not entirely gay, it certainly implies things between the lines, especially in the last couple stories. 4 1/2 stars, would recommend!
