Hello and welcome to Kaer Lóchrann (yes, the name is indeed a Witcher reference)! I hope you enjoy your stay! This is just my own little corner of the internet to put whatever suits my whim at the time. This can be anything from silly videos of cute animals to gifs from my favourite movies or shows. If you find enjoyment in what I reblog or post I am ecstatic that I can make your day brighter. I kindly ask you, though, to keep the following in mind as you explore the halls of this great castle.

🐿️ I take a neutral stance when it comes to shipping discourse (as a note all characters in my ships are either around the same age or adults). There is, of course, content I would rather not engage with, but I very strongly believe in using the block button, along with the tag and post filters, to avoid it, and I see no logic at all in arguing with someone I don’t even know over the internet when I could be spending my time on something I enjoy. I have no desire to engage in a debate about what I ship, and I kindly ask that people respect that.

🐿️ I am strongly averse to conflict in any form and do not wish to engage in a fight with anyone. I would rather have someone block me and move on with their life than exchange insults with me. All I want is to enjoy the things I love in peace and I wish the same for others. Everyone deserves to be happy, no matter who they are.

I don't like it when people say "if you say you can't cook what you really can't do is read instructions" because that really does not apply to something like cooking where most recipes are filled with instructions like "add a pinch" "boil until done" "cook at medium heat", which are things that require experience to understand correctly

There have been multiple people crying Learned Helplessness on this post and really sick of it, I'd be glad if you people could maybe think for a second about how perhaps things that are obvious to you (because you've done them a million times) might not be obvious to someone else (who might have never done them before)

Obviously you can fucking look up what "boil/cook/fry until done" means. You can look up what the texture is supposed to feel like, what it's supposed to look like when it's done. But no matter how much you research it that innate sense you have for if something is done or not just by looking at it/checking the texture is something you only develop through experience. Somebody might check for everything the instructions tell them to check for but miss some other indicator that their food isn't done, something a more experienced cook wouldn't miss. You're telling me you genuinely believe this can't happen. That reading instructions no matter how complex really counts for absolutely everything in cooking. And experience and skill has nothing to do with it. Okay

"You can look up what medium heat is" 1. I've had people on this post tell me medium heat should be marked on your stove (it's not on mine so that's not it) 2. I've had people on this post and elsewhere tell me medium heat is obviously 6-7, others have told me it's obviously 5-6, others said it's 5-4, idk man there does not seem to be a consensus on what "medium heat" really is? Not to mention, all stoves are different, some are stronger some are weaker. How could you know what the author of whatever recipe you are using meant? Besides, what I actually meant when I mentioned the medium heat thing is the ability to know what heat settings are the right ones to use for whatever you are making, maybe even despite what the recipe says. That's something you need experience to get right. Especially if you're cooking without a recipe. I guess I made a mistake by putting the focus so much on recipes in my original post, I had assumed people would still get my point regardless

I suppose the pinch thing is the easiest to not get wrong, I still mentioned it because how much of something you add in a pinch can vary. It's not a very exact form of measurement.

I didn't mention this one in the post, but I did in the tags. Say you're following a recipe to fry meat, and it tells you to "put butter in the pan, wait until the pan is hot enough, then add meat and fry until done". This is obvious if you know what you're doing but say you've never fried meat before. Again, there's the issue with the "frying until done" thing. But also? How much butter do you add? Just a spoonful? Or half a stick? Seems obvious if you know what you're doing but if you don't? How'd you know? I've never seen a recipe describe how much butter to add to a pan. And what if you don't have any butter? Most people know you can substitute it with oil but what if you didn't know that? Then, checking the heat of the pan. How do you do that? Do you just touch the pan? No because then you'd burn yourself. What do you do? You might look it up and it might tell you to hold your hand above the pan to check the heat (what I always do) but then what? What are you looking for? What are you supposed to feel? How hot should the air feel? Should it just be warm? Or should it sting? Even if you're told "it should sting from the heat" you only get that sense of if the heat is right or not if you're experienced. You know?

Also I'd like to personally call out everyone who said you should just "get someone to help you". First of all. Not everyone lives with someone else, and not everyone lives with someone who can cook. Second of all. In telling someone who doesn't know what to do to just get the help from someone who does are you not just kind of admitting that cooking is a skill? If it wasn't how could someone else help? If it really was just following instructions? They'd be reading the same instructions, wouldn't they? Or are you recognising that they might have additional experience to better understand the instructions/insight into what to do maybe even despite the recipe? But also, I don't even get what the point of mentioning that is. "You can get someone to help you" is never in no way an argument against something being a skill. It is true for anything. Would you also say that, for example, woodworking isn't a skill? Because if you're struggling you can just get someone else to help? Like, how can you think this is in any way an argument against cooking being skill-based. It has nothing to do with that at all. What point are you trying to make by mentioning that. Tell me please

A lot of people have also mentioned that chronic pain, illesses, disablilities or issues with fine-motor control can lead to some not being able to do things like stir something for a prolonged period of time, handling knives or standing long enough to work on something at a stove among other things, and that this can really affect your ability to cook. I didn't even think about that myself but it's all true. These are all things tons of people struggle with and they have nothing to do with not being able to read instructions
