[O]ne need not argue Chinatown as either a celebration or as a radical revision when it can clearly be seen as both. The film is perhaps most famous for the “My sister … My daughter” scene in which detective Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) brutally slaps seeming femme fatale Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) into a confession he had not anticipated—that she has been raped by, and had a daughter with, her father. Each slap emits a seemingly opposite truth: is the young girl Evelyn’s sister or her daughter? It is revealed that both sides of the binary are true, undercutting all convention, expectation, sense of coherent order. The scene suggests the pivot or lever by which the film operates. It is not either/or, but both.

Properly written texts are like spiders’ webs: tight, concentric, transparent, well-spun and firm. They draw into themselves all the creatures of the air. Metaphors flitting hastily through them become their nourishing prey. Subject matter comes winging towards them. The soundness of a conception can be judged by whether it causes one quotation to summon another. Where thought has opened up one cell of reality, it should, without violence by the subject, penetrate the next. It proves its relation to the object as soon as other objects crystallize around it. In the light that it casts on its chosen substance, others begin to glow.

flanagan's crimes are many and varied but at this point his insistence on taking material explicitly critical of family structures (sometimes including portrayal of intense abuse) and adapting it into stories about The Beauty Of The Nuclear Family is all but indistinguishable from an entirely conservative project

I love asking people how their parents met. You always get an interesting reply. My best friend’s parents met on the relatively new internet in 1999. My other friend’s parents met at Burger King when one was the manager and the other was a regular customer. My parents met at the beach because they were neighbors in their rental houses, mom was on a church trip and dad was getting blackout drunk every night with his friends next door.
Tell me how your parents met in the tags.
