it's difficult to lie about real stuff because truth has an integrity across multiple domains that most convenient falsehoods will lack, as a result most lies are not clever acts of deception but social consensus to go along with the made up story for group cohesion, and when the lie is "discovered" it's usually less about new evidence coming to light and more about a shift in the social status quo that makes it easier to admit what everyone already knew.
