Call me Kaz! I use he/they pronouns and if you cant tell, i really like Avatar.
This blog is just entirely dedicated to Avatar, since i have some mutuals on my main blog who aren't the fondest of Avatar. This is mostly my rambles and AUs
I am a Spider defender!! Do not follow me if you hate Spider
My favorite characters are Kiri, Tsireya, Spider and Varang. Though, I love just about every single character.
actually going feral because why is the afaa art book FIFTY DOLLARS!! I am a BROKE student who is unhealthily hyperfixated on Avatar, they should give discounts to people like me
people will tell you spider deserves to die and overglaze neytiri in the same breath as they look at you STRAIGHT into the eye
useless rants below, i just hate the fandom
SPOILERS FOR ALL AVATAR MOVIES (mentions of canonical events, violent or negative topics, racism, my biased opinions)
also: im extremely pissed off by the avatar fandom and how unbelieveably closeminded some of them are
1,4k words give or take
I think what a lot of fans nowadays dont realize is that characters cannot just be the perfect victim, and no one EVER can be the perfect victim. there will always be a spectrum, not black and white thinking.
Neytiri is a perfect example when it comes to the debate about her racism. People will either say that she is racist (right but a shallow take) or that she is justified and is not actually racist (also right, to a degree).
Thing is, she is both justified and wrong in her racism. crazy, wow, right? theres no way!
Her grief is the source of her racism. Her entire life has been ruined by sky people, she has watched her hometree burn, her father die, her son lose his life all right in front of her eyes. Neytiri is deeply impacted by the events of her life, causing her to naturally distrust and generalize the sky people as a defense mechanism (?). Thus, she is STILL racist even if her reasons are justified. She is closeminded and refuses to open her eyes to Spider until he is at risk of dying.
Neytiri is still a flawed person. Crazy, right? She is Varang's mirror, she is what she wouldve been and what Varang couldve been. I find it silly that people will hate characters, like Spider for example, just cause and when you ask them why, they ramble on and on about how he is not a great person and that he sends a terrible message and alike. (Which, I can see as Natives accepting a child of the oppressor is... well yeah, definitely bad.)
its not racism actually i think its more so xenophobia but like whatever i guess
Moving onto Spider, who, I believe is the cutest thing ever and I consider him my son (disclaimer: i may seem biased but i try my best to view him without my extremely personal opinions.)
People tend to blame him for a LOT of things just to cope with a character death. (see, Neteyam's death) Along with saving Quaritch. But what most Avatar fans don't realize is that... well everyone's gonna be a bit fucked up, if a character was the perfect hero/ine, there would be nothing to discuss and it would be like bland chicken with rice, no seasoning.
Blaming Spider for Neteyam's death is just stupid. This is one of the points I can't even talk about because 1: it pisses me the fuck off and 2: i can't recall most of the movies. Blaming him is an extremely shallow take and is, one of the worst, if not the worst, take I have ever heard in all of Avatar history. All I can say is, blame Lyle instead. Blame the actual person who shot him, even if Spider wasn't there, Kiri and Tuk were there. They would have gone anyway, and Neteyam would've got shot. if Lyle wasn't there, Neteyam would not die, Spider or not.
For further debate I will be talking about all of the points made here (not because im uncreative i swear):
1: His presence makes no sense
Simple. He pushes the plot forward and gives us, the viewer, a way to insert ourselves into the Sully Family indirectly.
2: There were no mentions of Quaritch having a love interest:
I do admit that this is something Cameron missed in the movies, and I'm sure he didn't quite mean to do that. However, this is one of the less worse takes, and Quaritch's love interest is explained in the comics. (see, Avatar: The High Ground)
3: His character design is very lazy
Objective opinions, not worth debating about when this is about personalities in this case.
I'll skip over bad casting and chunky dreadlocks (he literally is a stray cat THIS IS DESCRIBED IN THE FIRST FEW MINUTES OF THE SECOND MOVIE) because its just... not worth my time.
4: Wrong casting and writing
Now this is one of the things I believe this person should have worded much better. While I do believe in that had Spider been POC, people would have loved him much more and not be so much as a "White Savior." But then again, Quaritch would have to get with a POC woman OR be POC himself and also it just.?? there are so many things that dontmake sense
I think racism against white people is more of an "ehh" topic, but if I said "oh if he was white instead of POC people would have loved him more." then id be sacrificed and burnt on the stake. This person practically said that, just switched the colors around. Genuinely fucking weird??? the hell bro
5: He behaves too much like a sky person
bro hes a sky person around sky people even as much as he hangs around with the sullys. he WILL eventually pick their slang up one way or another dude WHAT WAS THIS PERSONS POINT WITH THIS?? He acts PLENTY na'vi.
6: Takes away from the story
Who are you to generalize avatar fans? Are the "Fake fans" any less of fans than "True fans"??
This person is not only singling out Kiri and Spider just for the sake of hating but also wrong :sob: The movie follows THE FAMILY, Spider hangs around the family, so of course you're gonna see him. While I admit, the movie didn't focus a lot on the Mangkwan but I think James Cameron is saving it for the later movies as there is no way that there will just be one movie about them. You don't even get a LOT of only Kiri and Spider focused scenes, heck, the kiss scene is deleted as far as I know.
I do admit that Kiri and Spider's relationship could have been handled way differently, but not everything goes yours or my way. I think that if Spider was adopted by a different family, or even NORM (which could complicate things but yk), it would have been a lot more better but I think, the healthiest way to view them is not at all or that Spider and Kiri are childhood friends (Which they are) and that Spider considers Kiri's family the same way a family in law would be seen. I do see how some people would interpret it as incest however and that is still a very real line that James Cameron is using as a jumping rope, even if unintentionally.
7: I believe a lot of people would prefer following Jake and the Na'vi reclaiming their home
do you want the same repeat movie across the entire franchise or like what...???
Now, moving on from that person's points, its time to move to the ones I see often.
Saving Quaritch:
This is one of my most favorite scenes to analyze because people are just!!! they cannot comprehend that people HAVE moral warfare and aren't exactly justifiable. It was most likely a way to keep Quaritch alive by James Cameron, but then again, there is the story.
Spider was treated (arguably a little better) by Quaritch and the squad than the Sully family. While I do imagine
that in the years with Spider and the Sullys there wasn't straining or tension, but I can imagine how after being practically ostracized from a distance by Neytiri, then he'd find Quaritch, his ACTUAL father, somewhat of a better person even if that is morally wrong.
We see him HESITATE when he sees Quaritch. He almost goes away, but then something in him tugs at him. That's the only real family he had, and like most fatherless people, they will seek that father figure in someone. Quaritch was that someone. Spider is kind but he was choosing between letting his biological father die or saving him.
My mother often screamed at me or my brother when I was young and was pretty aggressive (at most verbally), I didn't trust her with any of my secrets but I would still choose to save her in a heartbeat, no matter how much I wished that she would be gone from my life. You cannot JUST let go of your family like that. It's one of the few things i think Spider could have felt.
Teaching Quaritch and his squad the na'vi language, traditions, etc:
he was held hostage dude i think this is stupid as fuck to even talk about
Kiri and Spider's relationship:
See; second half of point 6
Lying to the Sully family about Quaritch being dead:
bro do u expect him to be like "hey guys i saved the person who terrorized yall" NO OF COURSE NOT
People ask for complex characters then get mad when said character isn't easily justifiable or morally right and I think that's deeply rooted in wanting to seem "good." when really, you just look extremely closeminded and hateful.
GOSH I LOVE MULTI FACETED CHARACTERS THAT AREN'T EASILY JUSTIFIABLE
btw to person from the tikok screenshot? i mean no hate towards them, genuinely. i dont actually care about what people think (despite it seeming like it), i just get mad when its such shallow takes.
ok bye thank u for reading this
can't take people seriously when they say spider is "appropriating na'vi culture" because what kind of cognitive dissonance do you have going on for you to not understand that spider was born on pandora and the na'vi culture is the only culture he grew up with. he didn't just arrive there yesterday and wears the na'vi like a costume (unlike what the avatar program literally started as), it's who he is.
roleswap au where Neytiri, Jake and their family are all humans living in High Camp and Spider is a random orphan Avatar-hybrid child (whos still Quaritch's child, which is why nobody will adopt him) that hangs out with the family.
Just imagine, a class full of human kids. They didn't mean to have this many human children on Pandora, but it just sortve happened. They're all sitting still, being taught math or something boring, and it looks super normal...and then theres this way taller, bluer, person sitting like a freak in a desk way too small for him.
The Sully kids love him all the same. Thats their brother, even if he's so entirely different. It's just a funny mental image. Might draw it
I was rewatching Fire and Ash and noticed Spider called the RDA "pendejos" (aka assholes in Spanish) and I think James Cameron should let him swear more in Spanish.
i dont think James Cameron writes Spider to his full potential. I want to see this boy have TRAUMA and I want to see him YELL and I want to see him CRY. He deserves to punt everybody and i love him
huge fan of when people write Spider as being raised by the scientists back at Hell’s Gate,,, like, those are his parents. I am also a huge fan of when people write Spider as not being raised by anyone. You can do Anything with that guy frfr
