A young girl who aspires to evolve.
Jackie was created for a Pokémon Paldea DND in September 2024, hosted by a good friend of mine. I’m not sure what spurred an invitation to play in his game, as he already had two or three different parties of players who were already established in the world, but I’m glad that I joined.
Since this was my first DND, I was nervous about creating a character that I would have to love and carry through a long campaign. I needed to make somebody who I could believably embody, but would also be fun to play. Since this would be taking place in the Pokémon world, I figured I could make a character who is exaggerated that feeds into a very specific niche—and Jackie was born!
I originally thought about creating a Pokémon biologist/ecologist, a character who would be interested in Pokémon on a scientific level, but something told me that this character wanted to be more. Maybe a little ill, or just different. So rather than taking an academic approach to Pokémon, Jackie turned into a character who was wholly devoted to Pokémon and evolution on a spiritual level. So much so that she believed that people are Pokémon.
I honestly wanted Jackie to be more morally gray, but somehow, she turned into a beacon of justice. It’s so interesting seeing a character that I created to be one way flip on her head and find her own path. It was almost as if she was denying the role I had in mind for her, and wanted to be something more than that.
The DND may be over, but my memories with Jackie and her friends will be something I always remember fondly. Aughhh!!! I love being able to develop and gush over my OCs, but it sucks that my mental capacity for making them is dependent on actively writing a story with my friends. 😭
