Our report from Creative Social. We sent young creative Artem along to find out why ideas are still important.
CS Presents – Hold on, your planning’s showing: Why we still need ideas
Thanks to Creative Social (#CSpresents) last night I attended an inspiring session with 5 great speakers and 1 confusing name. The underlying theme of the event was planning and how it can either improve the creative work or get in its way.
Becky Powder, ECD of LOWE Open, went as far as introducing a manual on how to use your planner. The basic idea of this manual was communication or rather lack of it. An encouragement to throw away the papers and just talk, tell stories and remind yourselves that both of you are playing for the same team and not competing with each other. Perhaps whats even worse than competing is sitting in the different sides of the office, communicating through a telescope. Chris Baylis, Tribal DDB, continued that we need to talk to our audience and not tick boxes between each other. He referred to a compromise ultimately being like a colouring book where all are the lines and numbers are fixed and only colours are left to be filled in by creatives. That’s why car ads look like car ads and beer ads look like beer ads with a few exceptions. More imagination and less box ticking.
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” The eccentric Sam Ball from Lean Mean Fighting Machine did not only quote A. Lincoln but also wore his hat. He talked less about planning and more about the creative process, mainly referring to the book by James Young ”A Technique for Producing Ideas.” (read it please if you haven’t) His primary message was about sharpening your own axe and the importance of accumulating general knowledge in life, especially if it involves mistakes.
The last 2 speakers, Tim Palmer and George Prest, reminded us that consumers are human beings and not some strange creatures from another planet. They are still not morons but your wife, husband, etc. They don’t see the difference between strategy and creative and frankly they don’t care. They want cool stuff and they want to feel good about themselves. The “Fuel Band” was of course mentioned, and it really deserved to be. The session ended with a thought that brands are increasingly creating more purpose fulfilling campaigns, an area where government falls short. Are we steering towards a world where brands are more powerful than the government? Most probably. Is it a bad thing? I guess we’ll see!
Overall a great session with diverse opinions and a great atmosphere. LBi were kind enough to provide the space, I would have loved see Simon on the stage too though.
Laters!
