The Fourth of July festival at the park was louder than usual.
Red, white, and blue streamers fluttered from every light pole, folding tables overflowed with homemade desserts, and children darted through the grass with tiny American flags clutched in their hands. Somewhere near the pavilion, a local band struggled through an enthusiastic rendition of Sweet Caroline, while the smell of barbecue drifted across the field.
You almost hadn’t come.
Holiday crowds weren’t usually your thing, but Maple had spent the entire afternoon staring at her leash like it had personally offended her. One look at those impossibly hopeful brown eyes, and you’d found yourself driving to the park anyway.
As soon as you stepped through the entrance, Maple’s ears perked up.
She barked once.
Then she took off.
“MATTEO!”

“She’s been asking about you all day,” you teased.

“Really?”

He giggled before wrapping both arms around Maple again.

A navy T-shirt hugged his shoulders, sunglasses rested on top of his curls, and he held two paper trays piled with funnel cake in one hand while balancing three lemonades in the other.

He held one of the trays out toward you.

“I was hoping you’d say that.”
You took the tray from him, your fingers brushing for the briefest moment.
It wasn’t intentional.
Neither of you commented on it.
Neither of you ignored it either.

The afternoon passed in the comfortable way it always seemed to when you were together.
The four of you wandered from booth to booth, Matteo insisting you all play every carnival game despite the fact that none of you were particularly good at them. Luigi somehow lost at ring toss three times in a row. You managed to win a tiny stuffed star after an embarrassingly lucky throw, only for Matteo to immediately decide Maple deserved it more than anyone else.
Now the little plush toy hung proudly from her harness.
“She looks very patriotic,” Luigi observed.
“I think she’s feeling the holiday spirit.”
“I think she thinks it’s a chew toy.”
“…That’s probably more accurate.”
Matteo skipped a few steps ahead, swinging a tiny plastic flag back and forth.
Every few minutes he’d stop to excitedly point something out.
“Dad! Look! Cotton candy!”
“Dad! They have face painting!”
“Dad! That dog is wearing sunglasses!”
Each time, Luigi answered with the same patient smile.
You couldn’t help noticing how naturally he slipped into fatherhood. There was no frustration when Matteo asked a hundred questions in ten minutes. No annoyance when he changed his mind halfway to an activity. Just endless patience and quiet affection.
“You know,” you said as Matteo became distracted watching bubbles float across the field, “he’s a really sweet kid.”
Luigi’s expression softened instantly.
“He makes it easy.”
“You give yourself too little credit.”
He looked at you.
“You think so?”
“I know so.”
Something about the certainty in your voice made him glance away.
He smiled to himself.

You found a spot beneath a large oak tree, just far enough from the crowd that Maple could stretch out comfortably.
Matteo curled up between the two of you, happily munching on popcorn while Maple rested her head in his lap.
The air had cooled enough that a light breeze carried the smell of fresh-cut grass and fireworks waiting to be lit.
You looked up at the sky.
“It’s pretty tonight.”
“It is.”

“They are not.”
“They are.”
“They’re definitely a little red,” you added.
Luigi groaned, dropping his face into his hands.
“I can’t believe I’m getting bullied by two people half my size.”
“I’m six,” Matteo corrected proudly.
“And she’s…”
He looked at you.

The sound blended perfectly with yours, carrying across the quiet hill.

A brilliant burst of gold lit up the sky.

He sighed happily.
“This is nice.”
“It is,” you agreed softly.
Matteo looked up at the two of you one last time before turning back toward the fireworks.

“Hm?” Luigi asked.
“You don’t have to keep looking at each other.”
Both of your heads snapped toward him.
“You could just hold hands.”
You stared.
Luigi stared.
Matteo shrugged.
“It’d be easier.”
Before either of you could recover, another firework exploded overhead, drowning out your laughter.
Neither of you reached for the other’s hand.
