Critical Role Spoilers! Episode 30
My thoughts on the Pridesire brothers deaths is particularly tragic in such a mythological way. They are paladins in a world were the gods are dead, and where does that power come from? It obviously is powerful enough, but the mystery of it is so fascinating to me. Heartbreaking too. I like to wager their power came from themselves in a way. In a world without gods, those who live must draw power from inside themselves to carry them forward.
And as tragic as their deaths are, especially given that Teor took such pains to rescue Cyd, its shows that even in the face of something truly awful, they still made an impact on the world in such a significant way. They get to pass on that to Wick and Thimble and the world as a whole, and its bitter sweet. It’s mysterious, its frightening. I truly hope Wick uncovers where the lion bros powers emanate from at some point. And really, if they had to die, at least they went our swinging. Or as medieval Europeans would say, a “good death” lol
It was a joy to watch Teor, his character was not only humorous but carried a lot of wisdom. Im excited to see what Travis plays next!
CRITICAL ROLE 4.31 Trick of the Light
+ bonus live Laura reaction
thaisha is so profoundly cool. like oh you don't get it you're here with four guards. i put that storm in the sky. i'm surrounding you.
I think our first conversation was like 'what if you're bad and you wanna be good. and I'm good and I wanna be bad.'
uh oh girl!
on canon dynamics versus fanon interpretation
"knightingale is a canon slowburn and i think occtis and thimble are siblings coded!"
"julien is like occtis' older brother. needlemancy is the slowburn friends to lovers!"
i am personally not a fan of how some people appear to have drawn the conclusion that people should consider any of these pairings as "canon" when, from my perspective, fans are reading into their own personal interpretation of a dynamic that they want to see while simultaneously ignoring the dynamics these characters canonically have with other characters, namely ones that the actors themselves have pointed out. people should be more open to the idea that others have different (valid!) perspectives. (also what happened to shipping what you want despite it not being canon?)
i used to be interested in the occtien/knightingale dynamic in the beginning, but some fans quickly started shoehorning Thaisha into the role of Julien & Occtis' mom when Aabria was EXPLICITLY against that interpretation of her character considering she ships Julien & Thaisha, and Julien & Thaisha have also explicitly expressed their attraction towards one another. their relationship being conveniently ignored for the sake of a specific yaoi dynamic gave me the misogynoir ick and turned me away from the pairing. let's disregard the Davinlloy potential by forcing Thaisha into the role of a mammy once again!
i still see the potential in occtis and julien for what it is - but nothing they have done so far has indicated to me that either of them are attracted to the other.
same with thimble and occtis' interactions - their care for each other could be read in a platonic/familial way. thimble and occtis are very close to one another and have been friends for a while, constantly wanting to be by each other's side through their hardships, and that could turn into something more if either of them lean into it. i personally like the dynamic because i'm a big fan of the classic friends-to-lovers, but also i'm a fan of whatever relationship thimble & occtis develop even if it's not romantic
the only thing Alex has said in regards to the potential of relationships has been:
1.) occtis is not interested in a relationship at the moment 2.) occtis had a childhood crush on thimble 3.) jokes about kocctis
when occtigan/kocctis is put on the table - most of the foundation of the pairing comes from Robbie & Alex saying that they might romance each other, and there's only been a resurgence because kattigan has expressed attraction towards occtis in episode 31.
Alex also shared with fans in a conversation during Phoenix Fan Fusion that Robbie really loved coming up with ideas to feed the Occtigan shippers (speaking about future episodes), and that has also contributed to the fan interpretation of their dynamic.
but even with the above i don't consider occtis & kattigan canon because we have yet to see ANYTHING palpable happen between them besides their handful of scenes, if anything it's just a one-sided flirtation
when your STR stat goes from three to NINETEEN in an instant and you can grow to human size to finally hug your friends
bonus Thimble Fan Club President reaction:
thinking about kattigan holding teor's corpse after the thjazi-is-julien's-shadow reveal and telling him "i'd spit on you, but i know you're down there raising hell with your brother". and it's just like... god, the implications of this.
i'd willingly curse myself so that you might haunt me forever. so that some version of you might stay by my side. but i know you too well. i know you're already gone.
Not good but not quite bad either, something else entirely
When Kattigan was the first one back to Hals and the next thing to happen was a barrel of apples being delivered, I thought for sure it was a call-back to Kattigan's terrible lie to get into the city. He said he sold apple pies, but didn't have any apples and now he is being provided apples. Am I the only one who thought this?
something something "pretty boy" but can we also talk about occtis' skeletal hand?
i'm the most predictable person in the world for drawing this moment, though i think my favorite part about this scene was occtis whispering "i appreciate that" after kattigan healed him, considering literally no one else in the room had given him any sort of medical attention after he had the undead equivalent of a heart attack
I think we need to appreciate this part of Brennan Lee Mulligan's WIRED interview a lot more:
"The evangelical right in this country needs to manufacture outrage to hold onto its voting block. [The satanic panic about DnD] was arbitrary, as the targets of their outrage always are. Fight the power."
Thought this was fitting for the current events
crazy how i find myself thinking i've got a handle on it all finally and then i see the ways that other people tangle their lives together so easily and live so easily together with their friends and i feel like that girl at the top of the stairs painting by norman rockwell
i'll always be here
