He listens for a moment to Scott and the alpha fighting. “I’m an alpha,” he hears the alpha say.

“Hey, me, too,” Derek mumbles, and then giggles to himself.

“Ding,” says the elevator.

the statements “the south & appalachia can be and is an unsafe place for a lot of minorities in some places, especially for BIPOC & lgbt people and a lot of aspects of southern culture can be bigoted.” and “the south is the most racially diverse region and has the highest concentration of lgbt people in the country, is not inherently racist or unsafe, and claiming the entire south are uneducated, bigoted hicks is racist & classist and ignores the disenfranchisement of minorities in the south.” can coexist.

there is soooooooooo much nuance to this and i’m begging people who don’t live in the south to listen to people who live here. no one’s claiming the south is free from criticism and is a safe haven for minorities. but some people are far, far too comfortable calling everyone in the south uneducated hicks and refusing to understand the duality of there being poor, disenfranchised people in the south who are being exploited while refusing to acknowledge the racism anywhere else.

also PLEASE do not ask people in those minorities why they haven’t left the south yet. especially out of nowhere, but even if they’re complaining about bigotry in their area/the region as a whole

they might not have the ability to leave. they might have family there that they prefer being close to. but most of all, they might WANT TO BE THERE

marginalized people have communities and careers and friends and loved ones in the south. and they shouldn’t be forced or even expected to leave that behind to feel safe and respected

I often see this attitude from people in other regions that minorities should get out of the south, or at least should want to. and like...that’s ignoring a lot of nuance, and people’s lived experiences

This is from a while back when my mind got kind of stuck on Teen Wolf. I think I've seen at least a dozen drawings of this scene by others so its not anything unique, but eh... I really liked that look on him, and it's good practice. Done in a cheap (terrible) sketchbook with a mechanical pencil and kneaded eraser. Honestly I probably should have cleared off my desk to take a proper picture of it but... its cold. I'd rather stay in my nice warm bed.
