PCI Halloween 2020 - Shifting Fog

Note: this year's PCI Halloween is set after and in the same year as Battle Ground. Beware of spoilers, all ye who enter here.

In the wake of recent events, the importance of community has become more evident than ever. On the night when the barrier between life and death is at its thinnest, when powers can shift and fortunes turn, you are invited to this year's Paranet Halloween gathering.

The event is held this year on the property of Lash Hesperus, independent supernatural consultant (and former Denarian shadow). The house itself holds refreshments and a large fire, with a spacious stone-flagged main room for the sake of gathering. The grounds include a large, clear lawn and several acres of forest. The lawn is lit, while the forest is left in darkness, the gathering fog swirling around the trees. Both the lawn and forest are available to visitors, for those who wish to gather in groups or be left alone to their thoughts and mourning, respectively.

All are invited, regardless of alignment or alliance. Peace during the occasion will be strictly enforced.

Shadow's thoughts on Peace Talks/Battle Ground

Warning: major spoilers lie ahead.

For those not wanting to delve into spoilers, here's the short:

I have some concerns with some details the books laid out, but I will not be leaving. I still love this world. I enjoyed reading the books and they leave a lot to work with. I am willing to wait and see what happens with the timeline shenanigans we know are coming.

Spoilers ahead, because I can't do a freaking read more on mobile.

1. I was right about Mac being one of the Grigori. Awww yeah.

2. Bill and Yoshimo deserved at the very least on-screen deaths. Murphy deserved a better death. Yadda yadda, you know the speech.

3. I need a Denarian!Marcone to rp with! :3

4. And here's a big lay down of where I stand. There was a lot in these two books that just felt a little... Skewed. We still don't have an explanation for the conjuritis, even though apparently everyone knows about even though we haven't heard about it before at all? Despite seeing many young magic users in the books previously? Also, suddenly everyone but Harry seems to know the deal with the Starborn thing, when before it seemed more esoteric knowledge. And Mab... She was so much more understanding toward Harry. It was a bit... Concerning. Anyway, I have a suspicion that we've already begun timeline shenanigans. At least, I hope that is the case, because otherwise... there are a few things I'm disappointed in.

I enjoyed reading the books, though the action in Battle Ground felt a little over-drawn sometimes. And I do want to see what happens next.

So, for those of you still here, or just showing up, PCI will be sticking around.

I want your involvement in the planning this year.

How do you get involved?  Send in an ask starting with PCI Halloween, and then include up to three sentences describing a scenario you want to see the community do.  I will take all of the suggestions and mash them up (given that it’s for Halloween, I guess you could call it a… monster mash.) into this year’s prompt/scenario!

a pervasive and frankly borderline toxic issue in fandom these days is how popular headcanons are elevated to the status of being irrefutable canon and so insanely clung to and that when they are challenged, majority of fandom lose their damn minds and forget they was the ones to make the shit up in the first place

Erase the stigma that if you don’t keep a thread going forever you’re a “bad writer.” Erase the stigma that if you & your muse can’t reply to a thread/s that you’re “lazy” or being “a slow rp’er.” ADMIT to yourself that the thread is dead & write something NEW. Repeat after me: Not. All. Threads. Are. Keepers.

MOST threads are just vignettes meant to flesh out scenarios and headcanons between you and your partner. Some threads lose their steam after 3 reblogs. Some cap off at 100 reblogs. Some end abruptly at a weird place to end a thread, but you know what? THAT’S ALL OK. Maybe 1 out of 10 threads are meant to go on and on, and we all know that deep down. Hoarding threads to reach some grand note total, or to feel surrounded by a suffocating number  of “kept rp’s,” is draining. And it’s at the expense of losing your muse and being overwhelmed. We all need to admit we lose muse and struggle with threads because we don’t want to write THAT thread anymore. A partner will understand, because they’ve been there, we ALL have. And if they don’t? They’re a crappy partner.

Don’t be a masochist. Half the struggles in rp’s and getting interactions are based on the pressure we put on ourselves (and shame, on others) to keep a thread we no longer have brain or muse for. If you look at your drafts and sigh a sigh of pain, not joy, then it’s time to be brutal and make some thread cuts and let your partner know. You’re NOT being a “bad partner” for cutting those threads loose. You’re being a good writer, actually. A good writer doesn’t keep all the editorial flowery crap and muddled notations. Not everything is the most valuable piece of art ever, some rp’s are just fun junk food meant to use up then drop. A good writer has to have a good editor, and since we rp by ourselves in our rooms, etc, we have to edit ourselves. IT’S OK. I give you permission to be a good editor, too.

Quality, not quantity flesh out a muse & their relationships. 

YOU  CAN ALWAYS START SOMETHING BRAND NEW; IT’S NOT THE END OF THE MUSES’ INTERACTIONS IF YOU DROP A THREAD!!!!!

Writing advice from my uni teachers:

If your dialog feels flat, rewrite the scene pretending the characters cannot at any cost say exactly what they mean. No one says “I’m mad” but they can say it in 100 other ways.

Wrote a chapter but you dislike it? Rewrite it again from memory. That way you’re only remembering the main parts and can fill in extra details. My teacher who was a playwright literally writes every single script twice because of this.

Don’t overuse metaphors, or they lose their potency. Limit yourself.

Before you write your novel, write a page of anything from your characters POV so you can get their voice right. Do this for every main character introduced.
