Hell House: Kids in the Tub Demons are known to take the form of children to gain people’s trust. I believe this waa the case for the kids in our bathtub, seeing as no one ever died in the house and no one ever owned it before my family.  But demons are drawn to negativity, and I had some of my darkest times alone in the shower at that house. Though I will say, the kids never harmed me. The kids appeared to be a young boy and girl, about kindergarten age, in overalls. The girl wore pigtails. Both were starkly blond. They only ever showed up in the bathroom, and could usually be seen playing on the floor together through the sliding glass door. They were never there if you looked out the crack or opened the door. You could also hear them talking to each other, though I believe they were one entity because they moved at the same time and were never seen apart. The only way I got them to stay silent was for me to sing. They tended to knock mp3 players off the sink, but if I sang, they sat silent and still, listening to me. I sang to them in every shower once I figured this out, and even tried to step up my game with new songs and better quality for them. But my favorite story of the kids was a day I was terribly sick. I silently started my shower and heard them say in unison “why aren’t you singing?” I explained that I was very sick and couldn’t sing. I shit you not, those kids started singing to me! They repeated some of my favorite songs. I cried int the tub, overwhelmed by their kindness. When I got out my mom asked me if that had been the kids she heard singing (Everyone who showered there heard and saw the kids, they weren’t a secret or doubted by anyone) and said they sounded nice.

Hell House: Radio Ghost There were many individual spirits in Hell House that I got to know over time. At first it confused me why there were ghosts in a house that had never had any residents other than our family. No deaths. I have come to learn now that all the spirits of the house were inhuman in some manner. Some kind, some not so much. The first of these spirits that I met, I lovingly named Radio Ghost. Radio Ghost was a poltergeist who enjoyed making his presence known by turning on radios or the TV very loudly. At first he haunted my mother, and later, me. The first time I was aware of him was a night in 2003. It was a school night in the spring. For my birthday my parents got me a nice stereo. Just as I fell asleep, it turned on full blast. Scared the shit out of me. Had to always keep any noise making electronic unplugged at night in that house. Radio Ghost had a very specific vibration. He felt playful in a way. I noticed, when I felt sick or sad there would always be a butt print in the bed like someone was sitting there. I once asked him to stand up if he was Radio Ghost. The print lifted. Radio Ghost ended up being my friend through the whole time I lived there. He assisted me in keeping my room a safe space from the other less kind spirits of the house. I allowed him to view the room as his in the spiritual plane while sharing physical space with me, in turn for him keeping the others out. In 2009 when we lost the house I had a tearful goodbye with Radio Ghost that ended with my phone randomly playing a song. I can’t remember what song it was, but it was a sappy love song about two lover’s parting. I cried super hard. Radio Ghost never stepped out of the house, I never felt his vibrations anywhere but inside, so I sadly feel he is a friend of the past. I would love the chance, however, to visit with him again.

Hell House: Drums in the Deep Hell House had a curious habit that even our guests would notice. It could happen in the day, but was almost assured to happen at night, starting around 10pm and ending at 1.30am. My family called it the Drums in the Deep cuz we are all nerds who love LotR. To be honest though, it was more like the Jumanji drums. Rhythmic, deep drums from the basement. It always started really quiet, like the house had a heart beat barely audible over the TV or conversation, but come midnight it was sometimes so loud it was impossible to sleep through. I wish I could tell you that I went into the basement while the drums beat to see what it was. I wish I had even one story of me being brave enough to look. But I don’t. The drums scared me to death. Usually when they started I would retreat to my room with headphones and loud music, or a friend’s house out of fear.

My Childhood: Frogs at the Vaile This was a terrifying night at my favorite haunted site. It was 2000, and my mom decided to take me, my brother, and one of my school friends who was staying the night on a spooky drive without my dad. We started at the Vaile Mansion and parked in the lot so we could walk around the house grounds at night. I was walking ahead with my friend, talking and giggling, approaching the front of the house, when we heard a tree frog croak. Then another tree frog answered from the trees. It was dark over there. Then the front tree frog croaked again and the one in the tree answered. My mom, who was several paces behind us. Called out “Girls,” and electricity shot down my spine. Her voice was filled with dread and immediately I stopped and turned back to her. She waved emphatically for us to get back to the van, now, with her other hand raise with a finger to her lips. We ran quietly. Mom floored it and whipped around to the front of the house. There we saw a man dressed in dark clothing crouching behind the bushes at the front, and a man in similar gear leaning against the tree we had heard the croak from. My mom drove so fast I thought we would crash. She explained to us that she noticed that the croaks were identical and figured out it was a recording of frogs, not a real frog, and knew we were in danger. She called the police once we were a safe enough distance away hat she could calm down and think. To this day I heavily question the validity of natural sounds when I hear them repeated or answering each other, and listen for variances in tone or melody before letting my guard down.

My Childhood: Vaile’s Revenge My parents were really cool and enjoyed taking us kids on what they called “Spooky Drives.” This entailed loading up on protective items like crosses, holy water, and garlic, and taking drives along haunted roads, taking walks in cemeteries, and always my favorite, the Vaile Mansion. I always took these spooky drives very seriously, and was always reverent and respectful to the dead and spirits around us, but my brother however liked to show off how bad he could be to our parents. “No,” was an invitation, and ghosts were not a threat to him… Yet. That night we went on a spooky drive. Our first stop was a local cemetery whose name I can’t remember. There were some raised graves with big stone lids that my brother decided to climb onto and do a little dance. I knew then that there would be consequences, and could feel the negative energy rise. We had to call the night off early because at the next stop, the Vaile, my brother ran up to the door and kicked it. Not a second after he kicked that door, vomit came spraying out of his mouth and nose in a violent torrent. His head swam with a sudden migraine and he doubled over from the pain of his head and the burning liquid being rejected from his wee body. Having become terribly ill out of nowhere, we had to take him home. He was sick for days. To this day he feels like it was the house that made him sick, and he has treated it and all paranormal sites or graves with respect.

My Childhood: My first photo evidence There is a mansion in my town called the Vaile that is extremely haunted. I have loved that brick beauty all my life, and in 1998 my girl scout troupe (run by my mom) visited the mansion together during the Christmas season. My Granny on my Dad’s side was a non-believer who took a group picture of us with my camera as we lined up against the side of the house. When she developed it she gave it to me right away, pointing out the bright purple orb and a grim face in the window. Even she couldn’t deny that it was weird.

Hell House: Nails in the Door The summer of 2002 my grandma died, my parents moved us into her house and began making repairs, gutting it of her things, and redecorating. One day during this process my dad pulled me and my mom down into the basement to show us what our grandma had done to the back door. It was nailed shut all the way around the 3 sides that weren’t hinged, with at least 50 nails. After some discussion, Dad decided to remove the nails. A few months later he got tired of waking up to find the back door wide open and the dog barking out at the forest, so he got a deadbolt lock for the door… It didn’t work. He ended up needing three deadbolts and a bracer to keep that door from opening on its own. To this day I still have nightmares of walking into the basement to find the back door open and the forest’s vines and branches reaching in with a deep breathing and drumming sound. I have this nightmare at least once a week.

Hell House: Ticking Clocks As I mentioned in Red Rom Part 3, I had chosen to take my grandma’s room when my parents decided to move into her house less than a week after she died. The first night we slept in her house, it was still filled to the brim with her food, her things, and her scent. Her room was really creepy, but was the only room that didn’t have any scary stories about it, so that was the room I took. That first night I slept surrounded by her wig heads with faces painted on them and boxes filled with reeking perfume bottles. But the worst thing was the fact that she had at least ten ticking clocks in her room, on the wall, on shelves, on the floor, and in boxes. These clocks did not tick in unison, so the room was filed with a constant uneven clicking nightmare. The next morning I puled all her things out of the room and found all the clocks. I thought my grandma was mad to sleep with so many clocks, and it was so nice to sit in the room without the ticking… At first. The second night I slept with my light on because as soon as the sun set and the room went dark, the ticking continued. One solid ticking clock still ticked. Loudly. When the light was on though, the room was silent. I showed my parents and their answer was to just leave the light on, or bring the clocks back in. I realized that grandma had all those clocks to hide the fact that the room ticked all on its own. After those two nights I always had ONE clock in there ticking to hide the fact that I had moved into a nightmare.

My Childhood: The Hanging Stairs (TW: Suicide) My childhood best friend moved with her mom to a new house when we were preteens, so around 2002-ish. It was a one story house with a finished basement. In the basement her mom made us a nice hangout room that we always liked to spend time in, as well as a laundry room. This meant going up and down the basement stairs was a common, necessary occurrence. They were thin, tall, with a steep slope. They were wooden, with the nails and everything bare to the world. No carpet or covering. Above it, the wooden beams that made up the floor above were open, leaving the stairs to stoop down with an ever higher ceiling. That will be important later. We always felt scared to go on the stairs. Sometimes we would feel pushed from behind or in front, as if something wanted us to fall, so I always clung to the railing. Luckily, at night, the hangout room had a door we could close, because we would see a man standing on the stairs with a dark glare and a violent energy. He scared us. (I should note, my friend was psychic too, it was the main reason we gravitated towards each other.) He would bang on the wall when we were trying to sleep as well, so we always had music going to cover the sounds. Well, her mom wasn’t very open with us kids, but luckily she had told my mom that the reason they were able to get the house so cheap was because the previous owner had killed himself buy hanging himself in the  stairway. He’d tied a rope around the beams of the floor and kicked a stool off of the steps. He had no chance of survival with the stairs so far below and nothing to grab onto. My mom told me cuz we don’t keep secrets like that in our house, so whenever I saw him instead of feeling fear, I felt pity, and it made him stop glaring so much.

My Childhood: My First Book In 2001 I was in a gifted program at school that allowed us to do our own special projects, no matter what it was. My first project was to write a book about ghosts. I was 9 years old, so in the long run it wasn’t very good, but it made a huge impact on my life. It was printed and bound, and each class and the library was given a copy. Then, on Halloween, I dressed up and went to each class in the school and read my book to them, and signed the class copy. I was also allowed to make an audio book of it on blank tapes what was added to the library. I owe a lot to my family, my teachers, and my school for allowing me to be myself and feel as if my efforts were worth something.

Childhood: Will-o-wisps In 1997 we went camping in the boot heel of Missouri with my Papa. So you can imagine the setting, imagine dense deciduous forests, rolling hills that were once mountains, deep valleys, and tons of small wildlife like chipmunks and squirrels. The summer was hot and humid. Sticky. There were 2 scary nights there at our campsite. The first weird night was when the raccoons came. There were hundreds of shimmering raccoon eyes in the darkness, and as they god closer and braver my Papa moved us kids to the truck. But the real freaky thing happened on the second night. We all sat around the fire as night fell, when our camp was surrounded by shimmering green lights that rose from the ground to hover and dance at about adult chest height. They were lime green balls with shimmery sparkles around them. There were hundreds of them stretching back into the forest at all sides. It reminded Papa of the Red Room, so he felt in danger and put us kids in the truck again. I was both afraid and in awe. It triggered a childhood obsession with researching orbs, will-o-wisps, and spook lights. I felt like they appeared so often in my life, and were so beautiful and widely experienced, there had to be something going on. While I sadly don’t yet know exactly what they are for sure, I have experienced such more malevolence in my life, will-o-wisps are a kind and lovely experience that does not ever send fear through me anymore. I appreciate them, but I am not pulled to figure them out anymore. They are a welcome mystery.

My Childhood: Carbon Monoxide My aunt lived several states away with her own family, and we would visit each other a few times a year. In 1999 I was 8 years old and they visited us for a week. That particular day we went out in the evening to eat at a German restaurant that started a fart war between my dad and uncle. I laughed a lot. But when we got home, I noticed a smell I had never smelled before. It was like sweet gasoline mixed with rusty pennies. Very potent, but no one else in the house smelled it. I am so grateful for my mom, who remembered that I am special, and while the men were making fun of our concern, mom forced everyone out of the house and called the fire department, thinking it may be a natural gas leak. They found high levels of carbon monoxide in the home due to a malfunctioning heater, and said if we had stayed in the house that night we all would have died. People like to remind me that it is impossible to smell CO, but I don’t listen to them. This was only the FIRST time I saved my family’s lives with this ability to smell CO, so if I ever smell that sweet sticky scent, I pitch a fit until the problem is found. It has ALWAYS been carbon monoxide.

My Childhood: Stained Glass Angel When I was a kid I had a best friend who’s grandma lived across the street from us. It became a common occurrence for me to spend the night with them over the weekends, including Sunday morning church with her mom and grandma. Even as a child I knew that church made no sense and felt wrong to me, but I liked the music and cookies, and being with my friend, so I went. The only time I ever experienced something in church was early on with my friend. The pastor was speaking about angels. I don’t remember the story he told because I became entranced by a stained glass window to my left. The sun was shining through behind a woman’s face and I hallucinated seeing a bright woman with large wings, whose face was the bright light. Her gown stretched like tentacles and all of her appeared to be made of stained glass though she was obviously moving out of the window and into the room. My friend shook me and I blinked. The angel was gone and church was over. I apparently had been staring at the window silently for almost half an hour (which s forever to a young kid) and had ignored my friend’s attempts to rouse me. To this day I believe in angels, despite not being Christian.

Hell House: Demonic Dreams In 1995, when I was four, my nightmares began. I remember having nightmares from my birthday every night until halfway through kindergarten, so that would have been almost two years of constant nightmares. And these nightmares were strange. I remember they mostly involved my grandma’s house; Hell House. The first nightmare I ever had is still seared into my memory. I was standing at the top of her long dark stairs staring into the basement. For some reason I went down the stairs. I remember they were super tall, cuz I was a wee child. When I got to the bottom, the door above was just a little square of light high above me. In the basement I heard deep voices doing what I thought at the time was weird singing. In retrospect, it was chanting. Then a puddle of black and purple liquid began to boil and these animated monsters (all scary things were called monsters in my home because my mom wanted to keep me safe from the scarier parts of life) crawled out of the floor. I ran to the stairs but they were too tall to climb, so I turned to the monsters and stood my ground. “What kind of monster are you?” I asked them. They replied “Demon,” and I snapped awake. I had never ever had a dream that was scary like that. It was so jarring I ran to my mom and woke her up by asking her, “Mommy, mommy, what kind of monster is a demon?” My mom was so upset and was certain that my dad had taught the word to me, but he didn’t. I learned the word from my very first nightmare.
