If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.

It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.

It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.

This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.

and not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but another reason I hate the return of 2000’s th*nspo shit is bc starving does make women frail and has longer term consequences like early osteoporosis, brittle bones/teeth, insomnia, ect. Your muscles will start eating themselves. It also makes you extremely emotional and severely lowers your capacity for critical thinking not bc you’re a girl but because your brain isn’t getting any fucking nutrients so idk I just feel like its very convenient that every time there’s an uptick in fascist rhetoric and women’s rights are being stripped suddenly it’s peak fashion for women to be starving, weak, and exhausted

It's not a conspiracy in that there's no one going, "we should make this popular SO THAT it's easier to achieve our goals of......" It's happening now because the philosophical drives and beliefs that motivate and underpin fat phobia and praise thin-ness are the same ones that motivate and underpin misogyny and fascism: that there are some bodies that are more worthy than others. This idea plays out on all dimensions, race, gender, transness, class, weight, disability, etc. The other belief is that something can and should be done about this disparity. This leads to weight loss drugs, stripping women's rights, Jim Crow and slavery, and everything else. (Obviously not to say that these effects are equitable in terms of harm and history, but just that they share some common denominators in beliefs).
