going on a date with bucky barnes and it all goes so nicely, so sweetly, so smoothly. you both had so much fun, chemistry and a good time. he's charming, witty and he keeps flirting and complimenting you at every chance he gets. he held your hand all night long, neither of you even noticed it, it just happened naturally, your cheeks hurt from how much you're smiling and both of your hearts are at ease.. that's until the date comes to an end, it's time to pay and you ask him if he wants to go 50/50.
that would be the first time he lets go of your hand that night, it's unintentional just happened out of pure shock. "50... what.." the confusion on his face, you'd think he's an alien seeing earth the first time.
"you know.. 50/50.. we'll split the bill between us"
"split the bill?" he asks and you just nod, he'd blink at you, "50/50.. splitting the bill.. what is this about, i asked you on a date"
now it's your turn to be the alien seeing earth for the first time, "we are on a date, bucky. this is a date"
"no, it's not a date."
"it is a date"
"you're asking me to split the bill, this is not a date"
"oh my god sam was right, you can be such a drama queen." you laugh, he just stares at you, blankly. "it might've been a while since the last time you went on a date so let me break it down for you.. these days, people who go on dates split the bill, they go 50/50" you shrug, "it's normal"
"it's normal? you've done it before?"
you nod, "every date i've been on has been 50/50 yeah"
bucky nearly flips the table. bucky who spent all of his three dollars in the 1940's trying to win a teddybear for a girl he had a crush on, bucky who used to save up most of his income in an old shoe box underneath his bed so he can take his girl to a nice diner, bucky who went to the florist to get you a bouquet of roses and didn't even ask for the price just handed his credit card because to him your smile is priceless, bucky is about to have a stroke.
"you've never been on a date" he says, face still blank.
"yes i have"
"no you haven't. this is your first date." he says, "i'm your first time." he smirks and you blush at the possible implication. "50/50.." he scoffs under his breath, "what else are you gonna tell me next? i should walk on the inside of the sidewalk? keep my jacket on when you're cold? sleep further from the door? not open doors for you? jesus sweetheart what has the world come to?"
you hide your smile, you love it when he rambles like that, he's so calm yet so offended all at once somehow, it's funny and endearing. "what's wrong with walking on the inside of the sidewalk?" you joke and he rolls his eyes making you laugh, "so.. no 50/50? are you sure?" you ask one last time, hands on your purse on your lap.
he keeps his eyes on you as he pays the bill, glaring playfully, gets up and pulls out your chair before putting his black leather jacket on your shoulders, "no doll," he offers you his hand which you quickly hold, intertwining your fingers with his, and opens the door with his metal hand, "no 50/50."
"Bucky who spent all of his three dollars in the 1940's trying to win a teddybear for a girl he had a crush on" might be the greatest line in the history of literature
notes: y'all i am so sorry this stupid mf (lovingly, mostly) has me in a chokehold, and its so bad. idk what thunderbolts did to me. i used to be a hater, and now i'm kicking my feet and giggling over him making me breakfast.
it's not uncommon for john to make breakfast for the team. he likes making pancakes, eggs, coffee, and anything else he learns they like. it's something he misses doing for people he cares about (though he is loathe to admit that he really cares for the thunderbolts), and after what happened after he became captain america when olivia-
âyouâre a fool, walker,â yelena says over her coffee, having treaded into the room so quietly he couldn't hear her over the sizzling of bacon in the pan.
john is startled first, and offended second. âthe hell did i do?â
âyou know what youâre doing,â she replies, no further context added.
only half a moment later, you walk into the kitchen. "you are a saint, john," you say with a tired grin. in one smooth movement, you pull a mug from the cabinet and fill it with coffee. john watches you reach for it and only has half the mind not to grab it for you. "don't tell bob i told you this, but your coffee is amazing."
john snorts. "yeah, will do."
"you make any waffles or is it all pancakes today?" you take a seat at the counter, stirring in sugar and creamer to your coffee. there's a stack of pancakes for the team in front of you that you're looking at skeptically.
he immediately perks up, and before you know it, there's a plate of waffles sitting in front of you. "made them just for you," he says with a soft smile, "i know you prefer them, so..." he trails off, pointedly ignoring yelena's raised eyebrow.
"like i said, a saint, john, a saint."
you and yelena talk while john takes the time to clean up, scrubbing the fat out of pans methodically. by the time he's done, you've already run off to train with bucky, and john pretends not to be bothered by that. pretends it doesn't get under his skin in the worst way that you train night and day with bucky instead of him.
yelena sits at the counter with a smug grin on her face. "a saint, my ass," she laughs, "you are a fool, walker."
HEAAAAAAAAAVY ON âthis stupid mf (lovingly, mostly) has me in a chokehold, and its so bad. idk what thunderbolts did to me. i used to be a hater, and now i'm kicking my feet and giggling over him making me breakfast.â
When did I turn soft for this man?? Not sure but Iâm not mad about it.
I havenât posted fic in years, much less incomplete ones (this is 2/3 chapters) but given the lack of content for this ship I figured Iâd take one for the team <3 This is incredibly whumpy and self indulgent! Also includes some speculation for how Ava managed during the snap. Enjoy!
Ava was too stubborn to die.
Truth being, she was too scared to face the ghosts lined up behind her. She felt their breath on the back of her neck sometimes, when she woke from fitful sleep to a whipâs crack of pain arcing through her cells.
Nights like tonight.
Her hands groped her nightstand in the dark, cursing as the quantum regulator passed through her fingers before she could get a hold of it. It was a crude harness made from trial, error, many cashed in favours, and a bit of blood under the table. Five years without access to quantum experts, and sheâd had to get crafty.
Truth being, sheâd given up hope the pain would ever go away. Janet had given her the briefest glimpse of freedom, and then it had been ripped away. She wished she had never felt that relief. Had never known. It hurt too sharply, returning to how things were.
Ava crawled to freedom herself. She built better gear. She honed her mind. She learned to generate her own quantum energy, a truly minuscule amount but enough to keep her alive in a pinch. There were even days her pain would settle to a low hum, and she could come up for air. Her survival tasted like battery acid, but it was hers.
Tonight, it tasted like kerosine. Pins and needles spread from her scalp down her arms, down her chestâfilling her veins with a deep discomfort. Then, like a match strike, she felt herself rip open.
A liquid fire spread across her nerve endings. She had to get her backup regulator on quickâor sheâd be in for a fun night clinging to the mortal coil with both hands.
Truth being, she couldnât be in her suit constantly. That worked as a kid, when SHIELD would sanitize her like a dirty towel run through a steam cycle. Now, as an adult, cohabitating with a tower full of people, she had to take care of herself. At least enough to keep them from looking closely. Which meant, among other agonizing tasks, allowing her suit to be taken for dry cleaning.
Valentina saw it as an âorganic opportunity for technological developmentâ. Meaning, while Ava was forced to go without her suit, she could test whatever prototype Valâs team of scientists had cobbled together that week. In theory, the blue jumpsuit that took too long to put on should help with this flare up. The lining of it felt peculiar in some areas, cool like gel under an ultrasound.
Ava gathered all her focus, planted herself firmly in time and space, reached outâ and her hands passed uselessly through the regulator.
Alarm bells started ringing in her head. She shouldnât be struggling to keep her hands solidâsheâd trained herself out of those slips years ago, during the dark years when sheâd had nothing to keep herself together but her own mind. She shouldnât still be woozy and slow. She never even slept soundly to begin with.
A memory cut through her mental static. What was it Valentina had said when delivering this new suit?
âItâs our most comfortable one yet! Youâll sleep right through those pesky flare ups, I guarantee it.â
Ava was going to kill her.
There was a force unnaturally pushing at her mind- willing her to sleep, to relax, to let go. There was also a force, timeless and all-powerful, causing so much carnage to her body that rest was impossible. And then there was Ava, caught in the middle of familiar pain and unfamiliar mental fog, completely powerless.
Panic started to boil in her chest. Or maybe that was the feeling of her ribs disassembling, the lining of her lungs tearing open. Again and again and again and againâ
Donât think about it. Keep yourself together. Here and now. Breathe when you can.
Her focus had been taken from her. She couldnât get the suit off- it was a mess of buckles and zippers sheâd dutifully fastened like the lab rat she was. She couldnât get to her backup regulator. Instead she was being battered in the winds of agony with no way to keep her footing.
And truth being, she was scared.
â
John was tired of being the only normal one on his team.
The responsibility of it chafed at him. It forced him into positions heâd much rather delegate. Unfortunately, everyone else around him was an unstable liability, never around when you needed them, or both, so John had to step up.
Which is why he found himself knocking on Avaâs door at 2am.
John had his roomâs noise-cancelling feature off by defaultâif something was happening in the tower, he didnât want to rely on Valentinaâs sensors to inform him. As a result, he was intimately familiar with the sleeping habits (or lack thereof) of his teammates. At least once a night, heâd bolt upright in bed, jolted awake by someone on their floor hollering from a nightmare.
Ava was no different, but she was uniquely unsettling. She never yelled. The first time she woke him up, it was with the sound of a drawn-out, heaving inhale that brought him right back to the night his newborn son choked on his own spit-up. Heâd run straight into her room with his blankets still caught around his legs, and then stood there, utterly disoriented, as she screamed at him to âget the fuck out!â
âWhy donât you lock your door?â heâd asked, half-asleep and still trying to figure out why he wasnât in his sonâs nursery.
Ava had, understandably, shoved him back into the hallway and slammed the door in his face.
She didnât lock it. He still didnât know why.
When Ava would wake him up after that, heâd sometimes catch himself in his own doorwayâor even out in the hallwayâbefore he remembered where he was. But he never crossed the threshold into her room again.
After her gasping usually came a beeping noise, followed by an odd mechanical whirring. More mysteries he tried not to dwell on. Maybe she had a CPAP machine, or an industrial-grade oil diffuser. It made no difference to him.
But, tonight. Tonight had been a double whammy. First, Bucky screaming into the night (his noises were both the shortest and the loudest). Then, just as Johnâs nerves had calmed enough for sleep to pull at him again, his Next-Door-Ghost decided to forget how to breathe.
Hearing it while fully awake was worse. It sounded like a sucking chest wound, like the whooping part of a whooping cough, like his baby turning blue. John massaged his temples and waited for the beeping to start.
And waited.
And waited.
And waited.
The sounds of unknown machinery never came. Instead, he was treated to a host of new noisesâ gritted curses flung like knives and keening groans that settled under his skin uncomfortably.
There was no way she could be injured, but John had to check regardless. He quickly found the team logs on his tablet. Yelena and Alexei had been sent on a mission that morning, and they wouldnât be back for another forty-eight hours at least. Ghost had been in the tower all day. Heâd seen her that evening, when the staff came to collect laundry. Ava always looked strange out of her suit, but she seemed fine.
She gasped for air again, and Johnâs jaw clenched so tight it nearly cramped. Ghost, he reasoned, was a grown woman who could handle her own baggage, a woman who had made it crystal clear his help was not welcome. So he shoved his misplaced concern asideâthis was not his sonâand turned on the noise-cancelling feature in his suite.
The silence felt louder, somehow.
He rolled onto his back. Pulled the covers up to his chin. Closed his eyes. And was perfectly fucking comfortable. He was lying on the highest quality mattress and sheets heâd ever owned. The temperature was just-right, down to the slight breeze coming from a faux-open window.
And John was so on edge youâd think he was defusing a bomb.
Anything could be happening in the tower, and he wouldnât even know it. An assassin could disable their security and make it in through the penthouse. Bob could be going Void any second, and Yelena wasnât around to keep an eye on him. There could be a fire. Or an attack on the street below. Someone could be calling for help.
AvaâŚ
Thirty minutes went by like molasses, willing, begging, pleading with himself to sleep. It was no use.
âGodâ damn it!â John slammed his fists down on the mattress. He was tired, so tired and frustrated his throat felt tight and his eyes prickled with heat. He grabbed his tablet and turned off the noise-cancelling in his room.
Ava was crying.
He sat up abruptly. No, not possible. Maybe she was watching a movie? Or laughing at something? But then he heard a string of muffled curses, followed by a sob, and it was undeniable. It was the delirium that brought John to his feet. The sleep deprivation, the clock blinking 1:59, nothing else. Except the fact that Ava, who held herself like ice wrapped barbed wire, should not⌠fucking⌠sound like that.
John grabbed his robe, and padded out into the hallway. Of course, of all nights, Yelena chose this one to be away. On a mission he wouldâve been just as capable of heading, mind you. It was up to him to step up once again. Of course it was.
John knocked on Avaâs door.
When he didnât get a response, he called out, âGhost? You alright in there?â He had no idea if she should even hear him. Would the noise-cancelling be bypassed if someone was at your door? Would someone that didnât lock their door even turn it on?
He listened closely, but all he could hear was that awful, grating, crying that set every bit of him off kilter. He barked louder now, âAva, answer me or Iâm coming in.â
John waited until his misplaced concern couldnât take it anymore, and then he opened the door to Avaâs room for the second time.

Chapter 15/24
Warnings: Language, PTSD symptoms, lots of angst, Bucky is sad, allusions to horrible war time, self-loathing, etc.
AN: Itâs hard to articulate exactly why this chapter was so hard for me to write. My own mental health played a big part in it, but there was something deeper I was forced to work through when confronted with their heavy conversation. Forever shoutout to my relentless cheerleader @lucyyannabel. Iâm blessed to have @barnesrogersvstheworld in my life, who put a finger on my doubts and worries of this chapter and gently shooed them away. May we all have an Attie in our life who so ardently tells you how valuable and loved you are. And you are, Reader. I promise. Love you.

The first time Jake Seresin saw you, he knew.
He hadnât even spoken to you yetâhadnât had the chance. You were laughing at something your friend said, eyes crinkling at the corners as you leaned against the bar at the Hard Deck, completely unaware of the way Jake was standing there, beer halfway to his lips, suddenly frozen in place.
Thatâs my wife.
The thought came out of nowhere, knocking the breath out of his chest. It wasnât like him to get caught off guard, but here he was, struck dumb in the middle of the bar, watching you exist like you were placed on this Earth just for him.
The worst part? He didnât even have the nerve to walk up and say hello.
Oh, he tried. Multiple times. But every time he got close, you were either walking away, mid-conversation with someone else, orâGod forbidâhe chickened out at the last second. He, Jake Seresin, who had never been shy a day in his life, had turned into a complete coward over one woman.
Still, it never stopped him from calling you what he knew you were.
Over the next few weeks, his friends caught on.
âHangman, who the hell are you looking for?â Rooster asked one night, watching as Jakeâs eyes scanned the Hard Deck like he was on a mission.
âMy wife,â he answered simply.
Natasha choked on her drink. âYour what?â
âMy wife,â he repeated like it was obvious. âSheâs usually here on Thursdays.â
Phoenixâs eyes narrowed. âYou mean that girl you wonât even talk to?â
Jake gave her a slow, lazy grin. âManifesting, darlinâ.â
Natasha and Rooster exchanged looks, then promptly burst into laughter.
âYouâre ridiculous,â Rooster muttered, shaking his head.
But Jake didnât care. Because deep down, he knew it was only a matter of time.
â
Years later, Jake leaned against the kitchen counter of the house you now shared, watching as you laughed at himâfull-on, doubled-over, tears-in-your-eyes laughing.
âWait, waitââ You took a deep breath, trying to compose yourself. âYouâre telling me that for months before we even spoke, you were going around calling me your wife?â
Jake shrugged, sipping his coffee like it wasnât a big deal. âWorked, didnât it?â
You gaped at him, still half-laughing, half-astonished. âJake. You manifested our relationship.â
âThatâs what Iâve been saying, sweetheart,â he said, ever so smug.
You shook your head, stepping closer until you were standing between his legs, hands resting on his chest. âSo, let me get this straightâyou saw me once, decided I was going to marry you, and just⌠ran with it?â
Jake set his coffee down and wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you flush against him. âDarlinâ, the second I laid eyes on you, I knew there was no way in hell I was lettinâ you be anything but mine.â
You rolled your eyes, but the warmth in them betrayed you. âYouâre insane.â
âMaybe,â he said, brushing a kiss against your forehead. âBut I was right, wasnât I?â
You huffed a small laugh, leaning into him. âYeah, yeah. You were right.â
Jake grinned, pressing his lips to yours. âTold ya.â
