the kicker is he was being asked if his work was coming from the approach of man vs. nature aka “THE ENVIRONMENT STRIKES BACK” but no. his literal words were along the lines of “sharks are not very scary if you are never in the water so i had to make them scarier, and now they have legs.”
Junji Ito has the best fucking take on horror, which is ‘wouldn’t that be weird’ and then he draws it into the most terrifying thing possible.
One of his strangest stories is about a cursed type of honey that, when ingested, is guaranteed to be the best thing you’ve ever tasted. But, if you consume it, you have a 25% of being flattened like a pancake by a giant tree demon. Characters eat it, get addicted, and that addiction forces them to risk it over and over again until they eventually get turned into a gory puddle by this ghost tree thing.
It’s a weird story, but the funny part is that Ito wrote it because he thought it would suck to be a mosquito.

I love time loop stories. Really, I do.
But I'd love to see a story about what happens after you emerge from the time loop.
When, after months or years of repetition, you have to learn how to live with a choice you can't redo tomorrow.
When you meet someone new for the first time and have to figure out how to navigate this brand new conversation.
When you reach for the same day's clothes and realize that you can't wear them because they got dirty. Your laundry, your dishes, your body, your teeth, all the tasks that reset with the loop are suddenly stacking up and you need to set aside time to do them.
When you reach that first weekend and your schedule radically shifts and you don't know what to do with yourself, which is terrifying but also exhilarating in ways you can't explain.
When you casually drop facts learned from those books you spent a dozen loops reading, and you realize you retained something worth keeping.
How your memory gets weirdly good all of a sudden, despite not having all that repetition to fall back on, because suddenly every experience is fresh and new.
And when the seasons change, and your hair grows long enough that you want to cut it, and when you realize it's shocking because you didn't think you'd ever see something as incredible as the passage of time.

I was rereading through your old yandere asks and I noticed no one asked about yandere Hidaka so can I please get some head canons about yandere Hidaka with Hisaru queen 👁👁
Hidaka would be a good low key kind of yandere, like he's such a big friendly puppy that no one realizes his darker side. Imagine him having like a lot of jealousy over Fushimi's whole Yata obsession, like here Hidaka's the one actually by Fushimi's side right now but Fushimi still keeps pursuing after Yata even though it's unhealthy for him. And so for Hidaka it's like a mix of possessiveness and 'knowing what's better for you,' like he knows he could be the one to make Fushimi happy if Fushimi would just let himself be tied down and forced into recognizing it. Plus considering how tall Hidaka is imagine him for once using that height to be intimidating, like they're out on patrol together and Fushimi spots Yata, he starts to go after him and Hidaka suddenly just pins Fushimi to the wall and is totally looming over him, telling Fushimi that he's not going anywhere this time. Hidaka's already lost someone in Kusuhara so he rationalizes all of this as just looking out for Fushimi's well being, making sure Fushimi doesn't put himself in danger or make himself more upset but really it's Hidaka clinging to Fushimi so hard Fushimi won't ever be allowed to escape, physically keeping Fushimi from leaving their bedroom if that's what it takes to keep him safe. And imagine Hidaka just being able to turn on a dime from being all friendly and affable to this real physical overwhelming force, the sort of person who intends to hold onto Fushimi so tightly it will leave bruises and he doesn't care, he knows what’s best for Fushimi and if what's best is being pushed into a wall or bent over a desk then so be it.
