Good oil finish for solid guitar body? - Thinking of Tru-Oil

I'm looking into getting an unfinished telecaster body in swamp ash simply because they seem to be cheap and somewhat plentiful. I'm looking for the easiest to apply oil finish (don't want poly) to provide simple protection for the guitar body enough that I can play the thing. I see tru oil mentioned a lot as it seems simply enough to apply. The process I was thinking of doing was as follows:

Dilute tru oil with some mineral spirits

Dip rag

Coat body lightly in tru oil mixture

Wait 5 minutes

Wipe off excess

Wait until dry

Repeat x times until it looks good enough (probably minimum of 5 coats)

Is this an overly-simple way of going about this?
