Honestly, I think part of the reason I’ve got so far through the thing so quickly is that I a)had read a summary before, so I knew where the ‘juicy’/bits that I’d like were and b)went in fully prepared to skip bits and read out of order. (For example, I ended up reading ‘Of Maeglin’ first, because he’s one of my favourite characters (and also one of the easiest to find in the contents page ;P))

I think for me, if I treated it as something to be read cover to cover, in order– I don’t think I’d have gotten very far? It’s just not that sort of book, at least for me.

I’m a huge fan of the Silm, etc. style. The LOTR trilogy, for me, was so labored, and tbh, and I didn’t enjoy reading it, but as an obnoxious classics and lit student, the Silm was like water for me. I loved it, and the supplemental material was even better for me. I love reading as an author creates and I just think the rest of the material was/is fascinating. Ofc, I’m a Feanorian apologist and a Noldor enthusiast in general, so that might be part of it, but I also just get super obsessive about world-building stuff that’s as good as Tolkien’s, so idk.

I’m all full of passion about all of this. I obnoxiously have The History of Middle Earth in three ginormous physical volumes and also digital, so. I’m a wreck, dammit. Stupid Tolkien, stupid Noldor, stupid Feanorians.

Same hat? Same hat! I too found a the LOTR a pain, and it was so dense I occaisionally mis-read it very badly. (I became convinced that Legolas has a pet seagull. That’s how bad the misreading is.)

I’m *this* close to getting some of the parts of HoME, mostly for the Fall of Gondolin though.

I’m a worldbuilding junkie as well, and I also really like the sparseness of the text allows multiple different interpretations, or writing of missing scenes (aka a fanfic writing junkie.)

Also same hate about the Feanorians. Those lovable murderous idiots. :P

YAAAAAASSSSSSSSSS! I s2g, you are the first person who hasn’t bawled me out about not liking the Holy Trinity~. I’m just...not into it. My favorite books read like The Silm, etc. It’s just what I prefer - mythology and world building.

Okay, I shrieked out loud about Legolas having a pet seagull; I can’t even lie. My enormous fat cat was alarmed and left her chair to hide in my closet.

The Silm (and assorted sources in The History of ME) is just wonderful to leave you enough room to go nuts with your own interpretations. For example, I have a whole saga in my head with hideous GoT/Silm tropes and it’s just delightful. That whole era really gives you so much to work with. And then, ofc, we have our wonderful artists who make everything even better. I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler, so I obvs don’t contribute artistically and very rarely writerly because I’m very shy and very anxious. :(

mother.FUCKER. I just spilled a glass of wine all over my floor. On the positive side, it was white wine AND I unknowingly took a nap on some Hersey Kisses earlier today, so they’re disgusting on part of my sheets and my blanket. The other part is now soaking up half a glass of Pinot Gris. I’m aggravated, but giving myself a big pat on the back (in the form of of that “Motherfucker, I’m Awesome” song). Just in case you were wondering, I 100% have “the swagger of a cripple”. (I don’t think anyone is new here, but just in case, the cartilage in one of my knees is crushed and I have a handicap decal because I look like a drunkard when I walk and am, actually, a cripple, esp when I don’t have my knee brace. (I fell once and had to crawl up some stairs.) My grandfather affectionately calls me Crip.

He is 88. I am way significantly younger. Like, talking-about-a-knee-replacement-as-a-probably-likely-thing-when-I-was-25 young. My granddaddy, btw, has no fake anything. Between the two of us, I will wind up with a new plastic joint first. Pathetic.

I have two friends who are more and more only seeming to relate to/think about/talk about/understand all forms of media in terms of their representation of female/poc/gsm/etc characters. As a queer woman, it actually makes me feel really uncomfortable, because they actually seem to be thinking of these characters as even less human than they might have before, that its become only about categories to them, not characters and stories, and I'm starting to get really concerned 1/2

because they’re in charge of the story writing for a childrens’ acting camp (that is how I know them), and I’ve seen this reflected in their storytelling. Characters and stories have become less complex, and more and more just about how evil all white straight cis men are. They strangely don’t seem to care about dissability at all.

because… there’s this whole thing where you write marginalized people as Good Role Models and oppressors as Evil and it is all supposed to Teach A Lesson About Tolerance and, like,

way to care about members of privileged groups’s need to Learn A Lesson About Tolerance instead of members of marginalized groups’s need for a character like them

in real life marginalized people are fuckups! We act in stereotypical ways sometimes! We aren’t Strong. We don’t always have sophisticated understandings of oppression (even our own). We have manpain (yes, even hte ladies). And if you don’t write that you aren’t writing marginalized people as people, you’re writing them as Magical Negroes (or Gays, or Women, or…).

and in real life not all oppressive people wear skulls on their caps. And if your story portrays all transphobes as evil… what comfort are you giving you the trans kid who knows that if they come out they’ll be disowned and still loves their parents because, you know, most people do? Don’t they get to see themselves in a story?

Anyhow. I found out a week ago that my longtime doctor died (he's been my doctor for over half my life) and I've spent an entire week crying for him (and shedding a few tears for Nimoy, too). But, I'm here, I'm alive. I'm toddling through the real world and handling poorly, but what else is new?
