atlantis writers: you want a canon gay couple on family tv?
atlantis writers: who also happen to be main characters?
atlantis writers: who don't actually get questioned about their sexuality by other characters because it's not a big deal?

bbc: cancel it
Pythacarus in Atlantis Series Finale
                         You love him
ok so can we talk about what a bonehead move Atlantis’ cancellation is especially considering the fact that they decided to include a canon homosexual romance which was established in the very last episode
like i was holding back on getting into the pythacarus hype tbh bc i was literally 100% expecting it to be more queerbaiting and i’m not here for that. it’s just like, as a bisexual woman in my 30s i just don’t have it in me anymore to get super invested in that type of thing usually
but they actually did it. and they did it so well. and it just goes to show you (as if this isn’t hammered into your heads so much already) how out of touch the network executives and people in charge of putting money behind these shows actually are with their viewership, not only because they look at ratings using outdated means of acquiring their data, but because they don’t even know which story elements they include are going to resonate with viewers.
because you know that there are going to be people drawn to this show because they will be seeing a proper canon gay relationship being talked about. people are going to see gifs and clips of how sweetly and poignantly it was written and acted. and that’s going to strike a chord with people; people will be attracted to that, they’re so hungry for it. but there is no more show left for them to watch, because the network didn’t want to give it a chance.
this isn’t even to mention the amazing growth and improvement Atlantis has undergone in only two series, moreso than i can say for most of the programming we have on tv in recent years, like??? jason’s descent and return in this series was incredible and endeared so many people to his character like wtf? and pasiphae is legitimately one of the best-written villains i’ve seen on TV in a long time and could have carried that character and cast for several more series? and all of the brilliant later-on character additions that worked out so well (like hello, icarus, whose relationship with his father is enough fodder by itself to be at least a B-plot in a multi-episode arc? and medea, who has so many layers of nuance to her that she was just so frickin’ poised to come gloriously to the forefront?) ...and so much i am not even talking about bc this post is already too long but holy heck bbc, how much artistic potential can one show possibly have, how much talent behind it across all creative departments and from all angles, and still get yanked away?
i’m so incredibly tired of shows getting cancelled before they have the opportunity to reap the full harvest of their artistic fruit, and Atlantis is only one of so flippin’ many examples.
I feel personally offended whenever Pythagoras is sad

It is no easy thing to wear a crown.
