JORJA CHALMERS - HUMAN AGAIN
“Hello? / Hello? / Are you breathing? / Can you make me human again?” If we hadn’t pushed play on it ourselves we would have sworn we’d have hit play on a Kate Bush track, as Jorja Chalmers has a certain tone and mood to her voice that is very (very!) similar to Ms. Bush. Jorja’s story is quite interesting: after moving from Sydney to London (thanks to a massive crush on an English boy), she started performing in nightclubs flanked by her saxophone, up until one day she was asked to audition for Brian Ferry after his assistent caught her performing. 10 years plus she’s a solid addition to Brian Ferry’s live band, yet post-gig she spent her time writing a solo debut titled Human Again which found its way to the ears of Johnny Jewel – fast forward a couple more months and here it is, her thrilling debut on Italians Do It Better. Even though there’s only vocals on 3 tracks, it’s quite the sonic experience overall.
