Not to sound weird but one thing i "like" about Tom Cruise is that he appeals to people in many different ways, there's people who like him because to them he's an adorable sweetheart pookie that can do no harm, others like him because to them he's an evil psychopath (i'm not a fan of this parasocial diagnosis at all but hey it's not exactly baseless), he's a naughty cute little boy to some and a motherly beautiful woman to others and a peepaw/daddy to many, he can a dreamy crush or a weird bug in a jar, like each fan sees him differently and i find that interesting even though i'm super anti-c*l*br*ty worship

sorry this is gonna be a really, really, really long post (i'll put it under the cut) bc it's a long story, and to explain tom's involvement with scientology, i have to explain some parts of scientology in general, which is complicated and hard to explain. tbh you will probably regret asking
(disclaimer: i am not a cult expert or a journalist, my research has been recreational. if someone sees a mistake, please correct me, i don't want to accidentally repeat misinformation)
tom became involved with the cult because his first wife, mimi rogers, was a member (she was born into the cult). she started indoctrinating him, and he became a member in 1986. he doesn't talk about the cult nowadays, and never did much promotion for them except for a few interviews. he did say that they cured his dyslexia, which is sad because if his dyslexia is better then it's because of his own efforts (there's no medicine or "cure" for dyslexia), but he doesn't give himself credit. for a very short time, he tried to recruit people on the cult's orders, but then they told him to stop trying because he wasn't any good at it and he was harming the cult's reputation.
he was recruited because he was becoming a successful actor, some people think that he's successful and rich because of the cult, but it's the other way around. they wanted him because he was famous, he was meant to be the face of the cult. scientology is known for recruiting celebrities (they have a whole section called the celebrity centre). the strategy is to have someone famous attached to the cult so that people think of him and blame him for what the cult does, instead of blaming the founder of the cult or the current leader. you probably don't know the names of the founder and leader, because the strategy works. the founder of the cult is L. Ron Hubbard and the leader since hubbard's death in 1986 is david miscavige.
the fact that tom is rich and famous doesn't mean he's not a victim of the cult. all cult members are victims, even the high-ranking ones, they only have slightly more power than other members (if at all), and it can be taken away at any moment. that becomes obvious when you listen to accounts from former high-ranking scientology members. they were still abused and treated terribly, because in a cult, the only person who is safe and in control is the leader.
and tom is not even high-ranking, he never had any amount of power in the cult. he was never an auditor, for example, he only ever got audited. auditing is a very important part of the cult. i believe it's one of the first things members are introduced to. tom was forced to go through it a lot. an extremely simple explanation (because the cult's beliefs are complicated and hard to explain) is that it's similar to attaching someone to a polygraph machine and interrogating them. the auditor is the person interrogating you.
the cult sells this as a sort of therapy which will "fix" you and your problems. you are supposed to tell the auditor everything about yourself, you answer all the questions and you're not allowed to have secrets. members are often forced to talk about traumatic events in their lives. the process becomes more stressful due to the polygraph-type machine, which the cult says is showing your level of emotion (again, simplified explanation. i recommend watching a documentary called "going clear: scientology and the prison of belief", to hear about the cult from former members). so imagine being forced to talk about a terrible moment in your life over and over again while you're getting more and more stressed trying to correct your levels. and what you say could be used against you at any time.
like i said, tom had to do this a lot. for hours without breaks. and you can't say no to auditing, if they tell you that you have to do it, you do it. i believe that they also sometimes use it as a punishment. i don't know this for sure, but people have said that the stress of these sessions was so bad for tom that it made him physically sick. i'm inclined to believe that. in any case, auditing is emotional abuse. and it was very bad for tom because of the way the leader, david, treated him. he often harmed tom's reputation and social life, by telling lies about tom to newspapers and magazines (for example, there was a story that tom was a cocaine addict, and that he constantly cheated on his wife, and those things were confirmed to be lies that were planted by scientology) and to members of the cult. he also read the reports from tom's auditing sessions to other people, to make fun of tom and isolate him. basically he turned most people outside and inside of the cult against tom, so that tom wouldn't have anyone trustworthy to help him, no one to talk to who wouldn't immediately report everything tom said.
he also got reports from other members and auditors about everything tom said and did. he knew everything about tom, which is scary because he clearly didn't care about tom as a person, he only used him as a tool (tom is useful to the cult, bc like i said, he is the most famous cult member so people automatically blame him for the cult's actions) and constantly insulted him. imagine if someone knew absolutely everything about you, all your feelings and thoughts and actions, and that person hated you and used his knowledge about you to hurt you and was always taking advantage of you.
david had a lot of control over tom, like i said. he was with tom a lot, people assumed that they were friends, but i think that it's a lot more likely that he hung out with tom a lot so he could make sure that tom wasn't doing anything that wasn't authorized by the cult (also a cult leader can't be friends with a cult member, because an abuser can't be friends with their victim. the victim might believe that the abuser is their friend, but it's still an abusive relationship, not a real friendship).
in 1990, tom got divorced from mimi rogers. the same year, he started making a movie called days of thunder. he met nicole kidman on the set of the movie. david was also there with tom on set, by the way.
tom got into a relationship with nicole, and they got married after less than a year. by all accounts (from people who knew them), they were very happy together. but nicole was not approved by the cult. in general, cult members are not supposed to have relationships with people outside of the cult (unless they can recruit them into the cult). if the outsider can't be recruited, then the member is forced to cut off contact with them. in scientology, this is called disconnecting.
nicole kidman wasn't just not approved by scientology because she was an outsider and tom wasn't recruiting her, her father was also a psychologist who opposed scientology. the concern for the cult was that tom's relationship with nicole would make him distance himself from the cult, which is exactly what started happening. he started spending more and more time with her, away from the cult. in 1999, he and nicole started filming eyes wide shut, which tom used as a way to get away from the cult for a longer period of time. he wanted to leave the cult.
during this time, the cult had been taking measures to break tom and nicole up and get him back in, including having people stalk him and spy on him. eventually they got him back, i think the fact that he and nicole had kids made it easier for the cult to convince him. i assume he was worried for their safety (and even for nicole's), anyone would be, under the circumstances.
in 2001, tom and nicole got divorced. there's a myth that nicole hated him and that he wouldn't let her leave (people often attach that picture of her walking somewhere and say that that's her after he "finally let her go" or whatever, but she has said herself that none of that is true. people just want to make stuff up). the fact is that it wasn't up to either of them. i don't think that they would've gotten divorced if it wasn't for the cult. he was very close to leaving, that's what's so upsetting.
the early 2000's are when he did most of his promotion for the cult. i don't know if he actually believed what he was saying. after all, he was close to leaving, and he did clearly realize how insane some of the doctrine was. this is a theory, but i think that they must have really dialed up the brainwashing and the auditing. there's one interview that's pretty famous because it's a meme (not the oprah one, the other one). if you watch it, you can see that he's not doing well. in some parts he's basically incomprehensible, but seems to believe that what he's saying makes complete sense. signs of brainwashing and cult abuse. he doesn't sound like that in interviews in previous or later decades, which makes me think that he was being treated especially bad during that time period, and that he was essentially being indoctrinated and brainwashed all over again.
in 2004, he was "honored" by the cult, by which i mean that david made up a meaningless award and gave it to him, seemingly as positive reinforcement. "welcome back, sorry i ruined your life and reputation and forced you to disconnect from the woman you loved, have a stupid medal. don't leave the church again or i'll kill you." there's a video of this ceremony. it makes me very depressed.
in 2008, scientology was put on his list of off-limits subjects for interviews. like i said at the very beginning, he doesn't talk about it anymore at all, so that's where my very limited knowledge pretty much ends.
all of what i've written has just been the surface-level knowledge that i've been able to get from my own very amateurish research. we (the public) actually know very little about his experience within the cult and behind closed doors. there is definitely more than what i know and what i've written here.
today, he is about as distant from the cult as he could be. i don't think he's able to publicly leave (that would be terrible for the cult, so they're almost definitely blackmailing him to keep that from happening), but from what little we know, he doesn't seem to be nearly as involved as he used to be.
