Zaira's van rolled to a stop and she leaned out of the window, eyes glinting in the darkness. Now that the sun had set she was taking a quick driving tour of the town, looking for places she might be able to stash her van undisturbed during the day, but this could be a fun detour. "Didn't your dad teach you not to take rides from strangers? I could be a deranged serial killer for all you know." Her eyebrows were raised and then her face split into a grin. "I'm not though," she lied. "I'll give you a ride. Name's Zaira."
" Are you a psychic ?" April joked. " Because you do sound like my dad." The more recent version of him. There had been a time when Pastor Young had preached faith in the kindness of strangers. She had not grown up so trusting without a reason. Being raised in a church, she had been taught to see the good in people. However it seemed like nowadays she was supposed to see the evil in them. The change of message was kind of confusing and had trouble to stick.
" But I think you're too pretty and kind looking to be a serial killer." April had heard you could see evil in the eyes. The other woman's gaze looked pretty normal. " Thank you so much !" She felt more comfortable being picked up by a woman. " I'm April ! Nice to meet you !"
" don't mention it. " he put the car in drive and toward the young farm they sped. he said a half-hearted prayer of his own that the pastor wouldn't come out to greet them .... it wasn't that he didn't like pastor young , he'd always been kind enough , but he brought too much with him ( final rites. warmed up casserole. good intentions. ) attention snapped back to april. he rolled his eyes. " careful. hurt my feelings and you'll end up biking home after all , " he teased. a pause. he shook his head. " not all of the people you meet are going to be good people. " god , he probably did sound like her father. " look , i- " a sigh. " vicki and i got mixed up with some of them. it didn't turn out well. " given that they both died ---- twice in vicki's case ---- he'd say it ended pretty terribly , actually. " i know you're smart but i know you like to look for the good in people , give them the benefit of the doubt .... you're like my sister. i don't want you- " ran a hand through his hair. " people fucking suck , april. i don't want you to get hurt because of it. "
" You wouldn't dare ! I'm in the car now and I don't see you kicking me out !" Jeremy would not have the heart to do it. And she would not move on her own. "Although, I would look kind of cool if I jumped out ! Like in a spy movie ! But I'm not that brave." And there was no reason to become a stuntwoman. Not did she have the skills to.
" You're right." She conceded. Of course not everyone would be kind. However she believed the odds were in her favour. There was more chance of meeting someone decent then someone bad. " But I think most people are ok. I'd have to be unlucky to stumble upon the one bad apple." April had little to no experience of evil or the real world. She had always been either in small quiet and peaceful Mystic Falls or away at her boarding school. That relatively sheltered life had left her unprepared and unequipped to deal with the ugly which lurked in the shadows.
Her heart sank at the mention of Vicky. April had not been back in Mystic Falls when the lifeless body of the troubled girl had been found but that shocking death had broken her heart. Vicky had been only a few years older than her. She had been supposed to have her whole life ahead of her. What a tragedy. " I'm sorry." She squeezed Jeremy's knee not knowing what she could say to dull the pain she felt in his voice. Only time would help him and his grief.
Her sadness was replaced by radiant joy and wonder when Jeremy told her he considered her a sister. Those words meant the world to her. They had known each others for their whole lives and she had clang to the Gilbert siblings after her mother's passing and since her recent return to Mystic Falls. April had always thought of them as dear friends and they had been kind to her but she had been unsure whether Jeremy and Elena truly saw her as a friend or more like a charity case. She had not dared asking for reassurance on that point because it would have been ridiculous and desperate.
You're like my sister. April was deeply moved by his words. It brought tears to her eyes. She stayed speechless for a little while. No words could really express how she felt. She did not want to ruin the moment with meaningless remarks.
" Oh Jeremy." She wanted to pull him into a hug and squeeze him tight, hoping he would understand how his words had brought light to the evening and kept the loneliness at bay. But he was driving so the embrace would have to wait. " I promise I'll be careful. You don't need to worry about me." It felt nice though. Knowing that somebody other than her father cared about what happened to her.
" And it's a two way street you know. I don't want you to get hurt either." And frankly Jeremy was a bigger source of trouble than her.
Jenna was sore when she finally decided to get off of the sofa, her eyes on the door with a slight frown. When she made her way towards it, she looked towards the door, swinging it open with a blunt look on her face. She was about to give the person what-for when she saw it was April. "Hey sweetie. How can I help?" She asked.
April was surprised when it was Jenna who opened the door. She had heard that something had happened but was not exactly sure why. But she was quick to offer the older woman a warm smile. " Hey Jenna ! You look.." April paused trying to find something nice and comforting to say. She did not have a lot of practice speaking with injured people. " It's good to see you on your feet !" Which was true and hopefully uplifting. "I made too many cookies and I was bring some over." Some might be a bit burned but most of them looked appetising. She also wished she could spend a little time at the Gilbert house. It was lonely back at the farm. " Can I come in ?"
"sounds like he cares about you, if not a little intensely." it had to be nice to be cared about in such a way. lettie had loved her mother, and her mother had loved her. that hadn't been enough in the end. there hadn't been much phillis could have done to save herself— or lettie. they had been at the fell's ( lack of ) mercy. almost two centuries had done little to dull the sting. shaking her head at the question, lettie replied, "no, i don't know your father. i just know there's a lot of things out there, and most of 'em aren't fair."
" He does." That April could agree with. She knew that her father loved her. " I just wished he would find other ways to show that he cared." Like actually spending time with her. " Great. I thought you didn't look like a spy but one could never know." People loved to talk. " That's kinda sad to say. I think it's not that bad !"
in all honesty, nora didn't really have time. her shift at leigheas was going to start soon, and whatever sister was working would likely be annoyed if they weren't relieved on time. her trunk was full of ingredients, but they wouldn't spoil. after a moment of hesitation, nora nodded. "hop in. how far from main street is it?" she'd just have to bring a coffee to the shop and profusely apologize for being late. switching into drive once the girl was secure in the seat, nora eased back onto the road. "sunset curfew? is your dad worried about the animal attacks?" nora couldn't imagine trying to set a curfew for her sisters. niamh would likely break it just to prove a point. "and no, i'm going to kidnap you. my house is full enough as is."
" You're an actual angel ! Thank you !" April clapped her hands in delight before getting inside the car. " Well, a bit far." She made a face. She hoped that Nora would not change her mind. " It's outside of town." The ride to her farm would roughly take ten minutes. " Yes. He says it's not safe at night. Especially alone or on my bike." If she only knew. "But I think I could out cycle an animal right ?" If she did not fall first. " I think he's also worried I could get run over by a car." That was more likely than a mountain lion attacking her. " Or get into troubles smoking or stuff." That was a big no for pastor Young. " That must be nice !" Her house had felt empty for years.
"you know maeve? that's great. what was your name?" nora tried and failed not to hover. she wanted to give maeve room to grow and develop her powers ( safely ) but she worried about her sisters. did they have friends? were they happy? "that's actually a great idea. i don't know if my mom considered it. i think she thinks it's mostly games and rides."
" Well not know know." She did not want to lead Nora on thinking she was her sister's friend. " I just know people's names. It's not a big school." She blushed. It was getting embarrassing. "I'm April. April Young." Everyone kind of knew her father. The pastor. " You think ?" She beamed at the validation. " People will likely sell things too. It could be a way to boost business."
"did i forget to take the uber sticker off my window?" vanessa joked, stretching slightly to check her back window. in all seriousness, she wasn't a ride share service. she did need to get home. she also understood, however, the paralyzing fear that came with the idea of letting down your father. her lips pursed for a second as she thought it over before a sigh erupted from her chest. "fine, fine. hop in. you're going to have to direct me." if the girl was, for some reason, blood thirsty, she had picked the wrong driver to attack. vanessa's bag and stakes were within reach.
" No." No uber sticker in sight. "I just thought you looked trustworthy." April tended to give her trust too easily, not knowing that in Mystic Falls one needed to be cautious. "And pretty." She did not know why she added that part but it was true. " Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you !" A huge grin was gracing her face as she climbed inside the car. "You're my saviour ! My farm is just outside of town. It's quick by car." Unlike with her bicycle.
"why would i kidnap you?" asking for a ride in a town like mystic falls should have been safe, but everyone was on edge due to the bodies that kept piling up. one hand rested on the car door, her keys dangling from the other hand. she had been so close to getting inside before being approached by a weirdo. "also, like, can we unpack everything you just said? did you say farm?" the couldn't be out after sunset thing was weird too....unless she was a vampire? but if she were a vampire, would she be out during the day? she didn't smell like death. "are you in a cult?"
April made a face. " I was trying to make a joke. Sorry." Apparently that had not been funny. " I would never have asked you if I thought you were a kidnapper ! You totally don't look like a pervert." She was probably digging herself into a bigger hole and should stop talking altogether. " Yeah I live on a farm right outside of town." She did not understand what warranted such surprise. A farm was nothing special.
She burst into laughter when the other woman asked her about being in a cult. She was not that far off. " The biggest there is." She replied after taking her breath. " My dad is Mystic Falls pastor. Pastor Young." That should clear out the cult allegations.
He could feel that she was about to say something but he was blind to the fact at her not so innocent intentions so he kept his mouth shut, not wanting to embarrass her. "Oh dang, we don't need that, that's supposed to be a huge event going on" he breathed, wondering why someone her age would get grounded but he, not having parents, was probably unaware of what happened behind closed doors. "Awesome, nice to meet you!" he beamed, flashing a lopsided grin, "have you lived here long?"
" I know right ! I really want to go ! I hear there will be fireworks and a Ferris wheel !" It would be so cool. She could not wait. Surely her father would have nothing to say about the event. Especially if she was with friends. "My whole life actually." Even if it could be hard to believe. She did not blame him for not knowing her or remembering her. She did not either. " But I was in boarding school until recently."
"It's gotten me this far, hasn't it?" she mused, over 900 years of lifetimes having been lived proof enough that not trusting anyone but herself was enough to get her by just fine - but she wasn't going to lay that on a fairly innocent soul. While she was one to burst bubbles she wanted to play with her new toy and see where things would end up
"Well you're not wrong," she said, a slight tinge of pink on her cheeks - her ego inflated at the compliment. She was still a noble at heart and comments inflating her ego were very much appreciated by her. "What? Do you want pity? You went quiet like you expect me to say something about you for not having the money"
" Yes." There was not really a clever come back that came to mind. " Oh but what if I had been the danger ? You said I should not trust people but you let me into your car. I could be a serial killer." Not likely but she could have. "I'm not though ! I'm not !" April was quick to add.
" Now you stay on that road for a few minutes." She kept guiding Arcelia. Her face grew even redder at the other woman's reaction to her boarding school confession. "No. It's just super embarrassing to say." Nobody liked admiting that they lacked money. "But no pity is totally great !" It was better even. " And we can totally afford a car ! It's not why I asked for a ride." They were not poor. April felt the need to justify that. "My dad has it and he never lets me drive anyway." Not since she had almost crashed the family pick up but it was not an information she fancied sharing. She had embarrassed herself enough.
"You're willing to do this for a practical stranger?" she asked with a small chuckle, not used to someone being nice simply because they wanted to - or was there some dark secret desire that this girl had? Either way she was amused, which wasn't hard to do per say but still. "Alright, alright, I'll let you have your little mission" she snorted
" Yes ! And not to downplay my kindness but it's way more interesting than homework." And if was not because her own love life was a tragic desert that she could not help others. Coaches did not play. " Thank you !" April clapped her hands in delight. " So what's your style ? So I can set you up properly !"
hottest person in mystic falls?
"..." April looked like a dear in headlights. She had no idea how to answer that question for there were too many options for her to choose from. All of the people she knew were pretty. She also had a list of crushes longer than the index of her prayer book. When one thought about it, it was strange that such a small town had so many beautiful people gracing its streets.
She had always thought that Matt was incredibly handsome. Which had made her feel terrible to have such thoughts about a dear friend's boyfriend. Elena's new boyfriend was also devastatingly pretty. Again, April felt guilty thinking that. Elena herself was gorgeous. So was Jeremy. April always believed that Caroline looked like the perfect barbie. Not to mention Bonnie who had been a source of envie for many years. The Mccullough with their luscious red hair and delicate faces were serious contenders too. All of the Fells had to also be on the hot people list. And the whole Lacrosse team. April was always on the bleachers with her fangirl signs since she had enrolled in Mystic high.
The guy who had picked her up the other day also came into mind. Pretty and nice. When she thought about it, all of the people who had given her a ride had been hot. The mysterious brunette who definitely was no uber driver. The one with amazing curls and good advice. April also remembered the pretty girl who had talked about the animal attacks and the nice and attractive woman who worked at the vet clinic.
The proper adults deserved some recognition too. Especially Damon Salvatore who was a new member of the town's council with her father. The mayor was too attractive for a politician. He would have had her vote. Although, Carol was the hottest Lockwood by far. Apologies to Grace and Tyler who were contenders but Carol was unbeatable. Sheriff Forbes was another mother who could compete for the title. While Jenna was the most beautiful aunt around.
"Damon Salvatore I guess." She eventually decided after all that careful consideration. He had that dark aura who made him all the more appealing.
how do you feel about being the pastor's kid?
" A bit weird sometimes." People would treat her differently after knowing that piece of information. Or assume she was a prude. A goody two shoes. Someone who would not want to have any fun. It definitely added some pressure to her, to not be an embarrassment for her father or the values he represented. As a little girl she had tried to be a poster child but nowadays she cared less and less about her father's reputation.
"Definitely annoyed a lot." But that was more linked to how her father was acting and treating her and unrelated to his pastor status. She believed his controlling nature would likely be the same if he were not a preacher.
" It can suck too." When people would force their anti religion propaganda onto her. Or when they only tried cosying up to her thinking it would earn them some good points with the man above. The town was also full of spies eager to report her every move to their beloved pastor.
" And it's lonely." Contrary to what one could expect. " My father's church and parishioners always come first." April felt like a distant item at the bottom of his priority list.

Jenna felt like she was finally healing from the stab that had risked her life. However, she didn't want to think about how much fear it had caused some of the people around her. Everyone was walking on eggshells around her, and she could sense it. She was finally able to be home alone due to healing, and when she heard the doorbell ring, she hesitated--not knowing whether to answer it or not due to being on edge. Everything was sending her overboard and making her uneasy, and she was always waiting for something horrible to happen.
April had been ringing the doorbell of the Gilbert House for a minute without anyone coming to greet her. She persevered, it was a big house. Could take time to cross it. Or perhaps Elena or Jeremy were wearing headphones and did not hear her. She decided to also pound on the door. "Hello ! Hello !" April screamed after a while. She could have sworn someone was home. There was a car in the driveway.
"high schoolers." liz sighed. she didn't hate them for being young and reckless, everyone was young and reckless once, she was just annoyed because all she wanted was to keep them safe and they notoriously made her job harder. "these kids hear town wide curfew and animal attacks, and decide its the perfect time to throw a bonfire party in the woods." liz started her day bright and early with a call about several burned bodies in the cemetery. she was just wrapping her head around the resurgence of vampires and now they might have a regular human serial killer on their hands. in mystic falls of all places. what's next-- werewolves? at the snap of a branch liz wipped her head around, eyes landing on a familiar face that didn't belong.
"hey-- you cant be out here, this is an active crime scene."
The girl was just trying to get home after the bonfire without being noticed when she ran into the sheriff. Out of all the people. She was the sheriff. And she knew her father. Great.
" What ?" April panicked upon hearing the words active crime scene. Like a robbery or like murder ? "It's not me ! I didn't do anything ! I swear on the bible !" She could be guilty of underage drinking. Of breaking curfew. But nothing more.
