just something terrible about the fact that there really aren’t kids websites anymore and now there aren’t adult websites either. kids don’t have neopets or club penguin or anything else like that to go on now where there could be appropriate moderation for their age, and so now you have 9 year olds on tik tok and instagram seeing content that’s not appropriate for them, and the adults on these platforms get censored to death because “think of the children” that shouldn’t even be there in the first place. kids would not give a shit about these things if they had their own spaces to go. but now everyone loses and you have an algorithm that shows pro-ED videos and thirst traps to preteen girls and bans adults for saying “my grandma died yesterday” instead of “my grandma un4l!v3d.” makes me freak out a little bit

“People lie about being sick” is practically verbatim what the management at my old factory job told me when I expressed concern back at the start of the COVID pandemic, that their staunch refusal to change or allow leniency to their attendance policy was going to result in a lot of people getting sick because it would make people still come into work while symptomatic and then start passing the virus around like a damn football. And these were concerned expressed right after we had made it through a flu season where that very thing fucking happened.

So I quit that job because I wasn’t going to get sick off of their refusal to grant any wiggle room for employees that started showing symptoms, and you know what happened?

A month later, they shut down, because they were overrun with positive cases, and one of their employees fucking died.

So. Your comment may be 4 years old and predate COVID by 2 years but uhhhh. Shut the fuck up, actually. Even prior to COVID I suffered every time I had to spend nearly an entire check just to get the proof I needed to not be fired. I never earned that money back. I missed a week of work due to a massive STAPH infection and came back to a boss desperate to push me out of the job because it was her shitty working conditions that made me sick in the first place.

People should be able to go to the doctor without it bleeding them dry and people should be able to take time to rest without fear of reprisals. Asshole.

I’m sick and the entire process to taking a week off was canceling a bunch of meetings and chatting my boss, “I’m sick, I’ll be out.” His entire response? “Rest up! :)”

I took two weeks off this spring and applied for family medical leave, and he told me if it didn’t come through, to just take the time and not worry about it. I really do not say this to brag, I say it to highlight how deeply unjust it is that the people with the best healthcare and wages are also assumed to be trustworthy. Are you really angrier about somebody in retail cheating Marshall’s than about that?

My father is a retired doctor of internal medicine, and he hates that shit so much. For one thing, it means some shitty manager has turned my dad into his student hall monitor, handing out passes instead of helping heal people. It’s a waste of time and resources, and it’s insulting.

But the main thing is, a policy like that endangers people.

Say you have the flu. Fever, cough, sore throat. First of all, he can’t help you. The doctor is just going to tell you to drink a lot of fluids and sleep and stay home. Many many illnesses are like that, all you can really do is stay hydrated and let your body do its thing. But you knew to do that already. 

Since you’re there already, he’s going to recommend some over the counter medicine, and if you are a loud enough asshole and your doctor works for a shitty enough hospital, he’ll cave and prescribe you antibiotics that won’t work because the flu is a virus not a bacteria, but that’s a whole other post. 

The thing is, he has other patients. And some of them are immuno-compromised, and some of them have conditions that make lung illnesses or fevers particularly risky for them, and you just brought your extra-contagious self into the same waiting room they sit in. Touched a bunch of doorknobs, rode the elevator with a couple nurses, leaned in to hear what the receptionist was saying… all so that he can tell you the best thing you can do is not leave your house for any reason, which you knew already but your fucking job made you do it.

my father was so angry about it he used to offer any amount of time for any reason. Like, you’d come in and say, like, my shoulder is too sore to lift things at my lifting job, note for two days please, and my dad would literally just say “how long do you actually want off work?” as in, if you had the money to take six months off and wanted to, he’d write the note for six months. As far as he was concerned, the more it screwed over the business making both of you do this bullshit, the better.

So. It’s not like forcing people to get a doctor’s note prevents lying about it, if that was your main reason for thinking it’s a good policy.

So many people miss the point of my original post and I’m tired of it so come clarification:

Yes, some guys suck. Some guys are really horrible people, who do horrible things. This isn’t news to anyone! Though it might be surprising for some to learn that there are women out there who suck, are terrible people, and do terrible things too. Neither of these things are the point!

If you’re dating a man, maybe don’t constantly shit on him for a funny little thing like ~gender~ which he can’t really control. A lot of people will make fun of and hate the old boomer mindset of “I hate my wife” jokes and then will turn around and do the exact same fucking thing to their boyfriends. It’s stupid! It’s annoying! And it’s extremely prevalent in the queer, more specifically bisexual, community (aimed at both bi men and women) to the point it can just be straight up Homophobic at times (why tf you shaming a bi man for having boyfriend instead of a wife??).

“Oh but Bees, I have trauma! I can’t help hating men and looking at the person I want as my boyfriend in utter disgust” then don’t date! Go to therapy, work on yourself! Don’t subject some poor dude to constant vitriol because you refuse to work yourself! For people who don't know who the Chevalier St George was:

- he was the son of a french aristocrat and an enslaved Senegalese woman called Nanon

- he actually had a relationship with his mother, which was pretty usual for children in his situation. I haven't been able to establish whether she was later freed or not, but I think she was because she left a will, suggesting she owned property

- his father legally wasn't allowed to make him his heir because of racist laws at the time, but he acknoledged him as his son and gave him a rich person's education and opportunities

- he was one of, if not the, greatest violinists of his generation, played first violin for the Paris opera and was violin teacher to the queen before the revolution

- he was in line to be composer and director of the opera but a famous dancer who was pissed off he didn't want a relationship with her started a petition to get his appointment blocked

- he knew Haydn and commissioned the Paris Symphonies from him

- Mozart's father tried to make him go and see St George perform because he thought it would be good for his musical education but Mozart was (it is speculated) jealous of there being another young music prodigy, and refused to go

- he was ridiculously handsome . Look at this, my guy is pulling off a powdered wig, do you know how hard it is to look good in a powdered wig?!

- he was considered one of the greatest duelists and swordsmen in france

- he fought a duel with the Chevalier D'eon, who at the time was living as a woman (we have no idea if D'eon was afab or amab but they made their reputation as a man and then later switched to presenting as a woman)

- he wrote incredible concertos and unbelievably terrible operas. The longest any of his opera's ever ran before being shut down was a couple of weeks. Some one lasted 1 night. He kept writing them.

- he joined the revolutionaries to otherthrow the king because they (falsely) promised to abolish slavery and emancipate all enslaved people

- he was a fantastically successful soldier and lead the first all black regiment in europe, which came to be known as the regiment st George in his honour

He's legitimately one of the most interesting figures in french history, and certainly one of the most romantic, and I'm so glad he might finally be getting the recognition he deserves!
