Update on Clementine, she’s 4 months old and so tiny :( she won’t eat and is now on a powder protein diet from the vet. She’s still offered bugs everyday, I’m trying to get a hold of phoenix worms for her since worms are the only thing she sometimes eats. I dont know what else to do for her :( the vet said at this point it’s likely just genetics since according to him my setup and feeding is all right. Any advice on how to get her to eat?
Aw, Clementine is such a cute name for such a cute lizard!
Bearded dragons are so popular in the pet trade because they lay many eggs per year. In the wild, only one/few of those eggs is likely to reach adulthood. In captivity, it is really common to see baby bearded dragons failing to thrive. At work, pet stores bring in baby bearded dragon all the time because of this. It’s really common. Your Clem is soo lucky to have a parent taking good care of her!
It’s good your vet gave you supplements for her. I also recommend trying a variety of bugs. Butter worms, wax worms, super worms, silk worms, and horned worms are all options for you to try! I dont recommend wax worms as a staple. You can get butter/wax/supers at PETsMART I believe.
For vegetables, try cutting butternut squash in triangles, maybe a bit of strawberry (for some reason strawberry always helps me?), and make a “salad dressing” out of bee pollen. I use local bee pollen from a local beekeeper, but you can buy this at most health food stores or supplement sections in big stores. Mix a little bit of it with water, and drizzle it on the veggies. That might entice her!
Thank you so much! I’ll try my best to find any and all kinds of worms for the girl so hopefully one of them catches her fancy! The salad dressing is also a wonderful idea!
@bettababies if you find that black fly larva is what she really only sometimes eat try dusting all foods with calcium. Since BSFL are high in calcium that could be what is catching her nose. I know it's how I got my baby to try and eat and he was about 4 months when I got him!

When keeping reptiles as pets...
People need to stop asking
“ What is the least amount of time, space and money that I need to keep this animal alive?”
and instead ask,
“ What can I do and provide to make sure my animal has the best quality of life possible based on the resources (time, space, money) that I have?”
If you feel the resources you have are not sufficient - don’t get the animal!

Is there any merit to giving beardies a commercial diet as a supplementary food to make sure they're getting proper nutrition? Is there any brands you'd suggest or any recipes to make your own nutritionally complete food?
By ‘commercial diet’, do you mean pellets? No. Honestly, there’s little value to those things. They’re filled with weird fillers and additives that have never been tested on reptiles and I honestly don’t trust them. In addition, they’re very dry; bearded dragons are often chronically dehydrated because, in the wild, their diet often contains a high amount of water. Fresh food is the best way to go.
Here’s my usual diet for my (healthy adult) dragon, Ngarehu:
Daily - butternut squash cut up into triangles (they’re easier for him to hold onto), dandelion greens, endives, and turnip greens.
Every other day: add in basil or collard greens,
Once a week: treat foods! Bell peppers, raspberries, grated carrots, apples… a lot of fruits are excellent treats. Once a month, he also gets banana, an absolute favorite!
Supplements: calcium D3 3x a week, and multivitamin once a week
Bugs: offered 3x a week
Honestly, there are a lot of combinations you can use. This is just the one that works best for me and my baby. c:

Glad to see this written out. I will hopefully be able to educated future customers who want beardies with this. I also know tho that people will ignore me and say “all that for a lizard?” and then buy a beardie and give it crap food
I DIDN’T KNOW BEARDIES COULD EAT BELL PEPPERS AHH THAT’S SO NEAT
I love beardies. Their dietary stuff is actually what makes them so neat imo
BEARDIES REALLY LOVE RED FOR SOME REASON.
another really good food for beardies that’s ignored a lot is spineless cactus pad. It’s IDEAL for keepers in California—-or any other part of the world that leans towards droughts—-because it doesn’t need a lot of water. It can be fed daily and the fruits are apparently delicious. Downside is that it’s a SLOW GROWER, LIKE DANG. I’ve been trying to grow my little pad for a long time now.
or maybe i’m just growing it wrong. Growing the food yourself is a huge money saver, btw, although not always practical.
You can actually buy the cactus pads online, either whole or in freeze-dried cubes (meant as treats you rehydrate). They’re a favorite of tortoises. I’ve also seen both the pads and (more commonly) the fruit for sale in grocery stores. We eat prickly pear too…though, personally, I find the fruit bland. Haven’t had the pads.
Thank you! I’ll look into this immediately.
My beardie HATES the color red 😅 anytime my nails are painted or I’m wearing that shirt he runs far away. I’ve given him red bell peppers he didn’t eat that day 😩 I have such a picky eater idk what to do.
What a weird dog!
Smelly herbs can sometimes tempt eaters. For the longest time as a baby, Ngarehu would only eat things if they smelled like basil. I had to rub basil on everything he ate and feed it to his bugs. Mint it another good one to choose.
He's extremely weird. I got him at 4 month she claimed he loved butternut I've had him since June 2015 he's never eaten it for me. I will have to try basil or mint! He does love dandelion greens and endive! But that's his extent he even refuses fruits! Banana raspberry blueberry pineapple Apple I've tried zucchini peppers and carrots(partly cooked) he sticks his nose up!
My snake exhibited a sudden change in personality? She is normally really calm, I don’t understand. Is this something I should be worried about?
@i-m-snek can you help this guy out with his snake?

What is your favourite dessert?
Dairy queen ice cream cake!
Omg it is the best. I mayyyy have a habit of eating an entire 12″ cake by myself
@xxxkyrareaperxxx wish there was an all vanilla ice cream cake with the cookie middle i strongly dislike chocolate ice cream but that cake is like amazing goodness!
I’m not sure about locations near you but at the DQ’s I’ve been to you can custom order the cakes with the ice cream of choice, maybe your local shops offer that too?
I think Baskin Robins does a similar cake too, but I’m not sure
I will have to look into that. They just redid the DQ near me
