I struck out very early on the Road to Hana. I found the #Waikamoi nature trail and pulled over to explore. It was raining slightly when I started walking the trail. As I climbed, I came upon a fallen tree blocking the path. Aloha, Hawaii. And Aloha, Maui! I felt rather adventurous grabbing my bags and venturing to the air port without any flight reservations. I had no idea how I was going to get to Maui. But I was confident I would figure something out. Using my trusty iPhone, I found a small airline that was departing in 20 minutes. I had the rental van drop me off at Mokulele (@mokuleleairlines) airlines. I arrived and was momentarily confused when I wasn't forced to pass through long security lines, or metal detectors, or TSA x-ray machines. It was an alien experience to be greeted by a friendly agent who helped me with everything. It was also an alien experience to be asked how much I weighed. Naturally I was joking about weighting a ridiculously small number; and we spent the next several minutes enjoying a good laugh. But as this new experience unfolded, I realized they had to calculate the entire weight of the passengers and luggage, and that meant I was getting on a teeny tiny plane! Can I confess I was super excited by this? I felt like a modern day Indiana Jones. I was so charmed by the entire experience and friendly staff that I purchased their collectible post cards. I'm not even sure if they are collectible. But they're very special to me. After all the logistics were arranged, I was given the last seat available on the current flight to Maui, and was told we would start boarding very shortly. I looked around the airline's building and saw the plane that was being prepped for our flight, and I captured the image. I had to tell everyone! I texted family and friends - even posted to Facebook - sharing my excitement. I visited the serene and beautiful #puuhonuaohonaunau park. The @nationalparkservice provided informative guides and videos for visitors. I learned that the location was a refuge for the old Hawaiian system of law. Anyone who broke the old #kapu resulted in the certain death. There was only one way to avoid the death penalty, the accused (guilty?) had to avoid capture and make their way to one of a the #placeofrefuge centers on the #bigisland. Pu'uhonua is preserved and constructed to honor the #ancienthawaiians and their culture. At the refuge, law-breakers would seek redemption and forgiveness for their sins, and it would be granted IF they managed to make it to one of the Place of Refuge on the island. @nationalparkservice explained that many refuge seekers would attempt entry via the ocean. Which sounded like a terrible ordeal to achieve. I can only imagine those seeking forgiveness were young and very physically fit! I was lucky to enjoy this tranquil place in solitude, which gave me a peaceful and somber experience. The National Park did a fantastic job preserving and maintaining the historical and cultural significance of this location. I ended a long day of traveling by treating myself to a relaxing dinner at Kilauea Lodge in the #volcanovillage of #BigIsland #Hawaii. It was nearly 2am based on my internal clock. So I would like to imagine that I arrived clear-eyed and gracefully sat for dinner. But I think I actually stumbled and crawled my way to my seat and plopped into the chair with a loud moan. I was so relieved to have finally arrived! Settling in for a lovely meal and mango #margarita, I was soaking up my atmosphere when I happened to glance over to the fireplace and discovered the International Fireplace of Friendship (#fireplaceoffriendship). I located a printed paper which explained the history and formation of this impressive fireplace. As the story goes, in the flush of peace between the two great wars, the concept of the fireplace was conceived. Letters were mailed to Rotary and Lions clubs all over the world. The National Park network was also contacted. The letters asked the recipients if they could send a stone from their location and which would be used to build the fireplace of friendship. The idea was lovingly received and support. Gifts, donations, and contributions were sent to Hawaii for the construction of the fireplace. Various items were sent including #coins, unique #geological items, #fossils, and #cultural items, and cash funds. It seemed the act of friendship was very important after the horrors of WWI. If you visit @kilauealodge, stop by for a wonderful meal. Especially on cooler evenings with the fireplace crackling. On the #bigisland, I settled into my apartment near #volcanovillage on #hawaii. I learned that locals do not wear their outside shoes in their houses, and they ask visitors to follow this custom. Iām traveling to #Hawaii for the first time. And Iām very excited! Iām going primarily to visit #usnationalparks on a few of the islands. Then Iāll meet up with a friend for our shared #vacation. On the flight out, I was looking at unreal #blueocean. Then low #clouds filled the view below me. Suddenly there appeared to be a large lump in the cloud layer, and I thought I was seeing a #thunderhead on a cloud. I kept an eye on it to see if it would darken and possibly display lightening. But I was wrong. Instead, I was looking at the volcano cone draped in clouds. That lump is Hawaii! I grew very excited. As our plane descended, small clearings would emerge showing a deep green land far below. It was an enchanting transition.
