Constance Wu photographed for Variety’s Actors on Actors
“My birth name is Constance, so I never had to deal with people trying to bastardize my name. There was a scene [in Fresh Off the Boat] where I go to my professor and he says, ‘I don’t call on you because I can’t pronounce your name.’ I say, ‘You could learn to.’ And he says. ‘But most people probably won’t.’ It made me realize how it must have felt for my oldest sister, who didn’t have an American name. That was very moving to me. There were a couple of takes when I just started crying.”
