I have heard of black people warning their kids that the race of a police officer is cop and you should not expect solidarity from them. The same applies to other types of minorities.

The sexuality of a police officer is cop.

The gender of a police officer is cop.

When you become the enforcer and protector of capital, you are making the deal to be slightly favored by the system over others like you, in exchange for being its servant. Your solidarity is with the system that you serve, even if it hates you.

If you want solidarity with those the system hates, you cannot be the system's servant and defender.

Pokotho's obsession with Paul is genuinely so interesting to me.

At first it looks like Pokotho sees Paul's inaction as interesting- but only as a challenge. Only in his own ability to push Paul into wanting something. But I'd argue the reason Pokotho seeks that is because he wants Paul to come to him "willingly" when he takes the thing Paul wants away from him. To admit that Pokotho's version of happiness and ecstasy is better than the life he was living before.

He ultimately doesn't get that, as Paul chooses to die rather than assimilate. But Pokotho still gets Paul as a prize, and Emma won't know one way or another. Pokotho even implies Paul chose the hive in Inevitable's lyrics. He relishes having him specifically too, especially in the reprise where he's making Paul the arbiter of everyone else's choreo in Let it Out/Inevitable.

Pokotho wants everything and everyone to be himself. But in choosing Paul as a protagonist he makes it evident that what he also wants is Paul to want Pokotho's own reality.
