Let me introduce you to Charlotte Ritter and Gereon Rath from “Babylon Berlin,” my new OTP.

she’s a whip-smart extrovert who hides her pain under a facade of sharp wit and careless hedonism, while he’s more of a “keep the pain wrapped up in my snazzy three-piece suits and morphine habit” kind of guy but she makes him smile* like nobody else; they’re genuinely buddy cops - they’re a great team and they work brilliantly together and in the male-dominated world of the 1920s Berlin police, Gereon treats Charlotte as a sometimes exasperating colleague, questioning her method occasionally, but never questioning her intelligence or observational skills or suggesting she’s less capable because she’s female; she knows some of his darkest secrets (his shell-shock and drug dependence) - when she (for entirely understandable reasons) betrays that secret to someone who doesn’t wish him well, he’s incredibly hurt but … he forgives her pretty quickly and goes right back to trusting her and her alone; when she’s hurting (in this scene) he automatically moves to comfort her and she drops her shell and lets him do it; they are comfortable showing their vulnerabilities as well as their strengths to one another and they are obviously physically attracted and palpably yearn for one another - but there are so many complications.

* By “smile”, I mean “grin like an adorable idiot.”
