“I have already tried it but once the sitter arrived, I changed my mind.” Eden shrugged. “I can’t do it. I don’t want to leave Liam just for one reckless night. It wouldn’t be right.”

“I’ll watch him.” Paxton offered, shrugging his shoulders. “Or get one of your siblings to do it and I’ll take you to the bar. You deserve a night off every once in a while.”

“I would not be able to be a police officer, I don’t know how you do it,” Hermoine laughed a little, tucking her blonde hair behind her ear. “So, uh.. how’ve you been? I haven’t talked to you in what seems like forever.”

“well it does take a certain skill. not everyone can handle it.” paxton laughed, smiling brightly as his youngest sister. “me? oh i’ve been....it’s been interesting, let’s say that.” he replied, thinking to learning of eden’s secret. “what about you? becs mentioned you stopped by her office the other day?”

“Yeah, close enough.” Eden nodded with a slight smile. “It makes me feel quite old. I don’t remember the last time when I got drunk. Not that I would miss it but…yeah, I kind of miss it.”

“Well why don’t you?” Paxton asked. “I mean, take a night off and get a sitter for Liam. Just go for it.”

“Wait - I think that I have already heard something like that. It was you, wasn’t it? You were seventeen. We got drunk and you said something like that. I bet you said something like that!

“No, you’re remembering it wrong. We were drunk, and I said something like if we were to get in trouble, I’d blame Payton since he’s the evil twin. But you were close enough.”

    “i mean, not that i’d do a crime of any sort, but it really is a shame that i’m the only male triplet and i wouldn’t be able to pull such a thing.”

“i’m pretty sure i’d thought of saying something like that when i was younger, except payton and i don’t look anything alike.”

“someone tried to convince me they couldn’t do the crime i was arresting them for because it was their evil twin.” paxton shrugged. “drunk people will come up with anything.”

“Monday. 10 am. I’m taking my car so hopefully, you didn’t forget where I live. It will be a whole day trip.” She gave him those needed information and after a brief look around, remembering her old school days, she really wanted to leave. “If anything, you can call me. I have still my old number so if you didn’t get rid of it, you can use it.”

Paxton nodded, making a note of the day and time in his mind. “Alright, so you want me to meet you at your house by ten and then what, we carpool?” he asked, looking at her. He wasn’t sure if she wanted him to meet her at the house and they’d all drive together or they’d be taking their own cars. “Sounds like a plan, E.” he replied.

“You can’t know if waiting is going to make it worse but I agree with you. We have to tell him soon.” Eden nodded and briefly looked out of the window. Seeing Liam with his grandfather, it made a slight smile on her face. “Next week, I wanted to take Liam somewhere. Zoo or maybe a swimming pool? I’m not sure yet. The choice is on him. You could go with us if you want to and if you are free, of course.” She told him as she looked at him again. This was a big move and even though she was nervous and scared, she knew that they are doing a good thing.

Paxton bit back a comment about knowing it would make it worse. Because him not knowing for four years was making it worse for him, now he had missed out on so much of his own son’s life. There were moments he couldn’t get back. He didn’t think Eden understood that, or would appreciate being reminded of that fact, so he kept his mouth shut. “Yeah, no just tell me the day and I’ll be there.” Paxton said, determined to make this work. He would be there for his son, for Liam. “I’ll make the time, just let me know.” he nodded his head with a small smile.

“I know. That’s what I have understood from your words. I can’t stop you in that. I won’t stop you.” She corrected herself and crossed her arms over her chest. “I don’t want to talk about what happened between us, like why I didn’t tell you. We are talking about Liam now. He is a clever and tough boy. I have had a few boyfriends and everytime when they got closer to him, things have changed and Liam was devastated and sad that he can’t see the man anymore, that his friend is gone.” She explained. “I am done with men now and some part of Liam is done with men too because he has always been on my side. Even though they were his friends, he thought they hurt me. The other day, when we met you in the store, I have never seen him like that. Liam is a talkative person but he has never started a "conversation” with somebody so quickly and I’m not even talking about the invitation.“ She admitted. "We have to find a way how to tell him.”

Paxton nodded his head. “Well I’m not like the boyfriends you’ve had. Don’t lump me in that category” he said, after a moment, slightly defensive. Letting everything settle and allowing himself a couple moments to gather his thoughts. “We’re not dating. I mean, not anymore. And I’ll be there for him, because he’s my son. Not because of whatever we were.” Paxton explained. He hated feeling like he had to explain himself, to fight to see his son. He hadn’t known, it wasn’t fair to assume something of someone who didn’t know he even had a child. “Well, we can’t hide it from him. Like you said, he’s a smart kid. He’ll ask questions and we need to figure out how to tell him. I think we need to tell him sooner instead of putting it off.” he said with a shrug. “I think waiting is going to make it worse.”

Honestly, Eden didn’t want to talk to him now but when they were both already into it, she thought that it was a good idea to do it right now and then don’t stress about it later. “School sounds good.” She replied to his suggestion with a little nod and headed to the main entrance. Hopefully, Liam survives without his drink for a few minutes. As they got into the school, she looked around the corridor where could be an empty class. By chance, they ended up in their old class. Closing the door, she briefly looked around and moved from the door to a window. “Before I say something, I would like to know your scenario. How do you imagine it? What do you want to do?”

Paxton nodded, taking his beer and walking toward the old high school. It was practically empty, as everyone else was out on the field celebrating the last day of finals and the beginning of the summer, but they had just gone into the first empty classroom. Which happened to be one where they used to have class together. It brought back some memories as Paxton looked around, taking a seat on the first desk he could. Paxton shrugged, his feet dangling off the desk. “I don’t know. I just know I want to be in his life, E.” he said, emotion already coming through his voice. “I can’t not be in my son’s life, and I still can’t believe you never told me.” his voice cracked, caked with emotion as he spoke. He knew they already had it out, but it was still so new. So raw. And he didn’t know if she understood how he felt. “I want to be his dad. That’s what I want.”

Eden nodded. “Yes, he is currently with my dad. They are exploring this place, trying to find the best game for them.” She explained and adjusted Liam’s backpack on her shoulder. “I was about to buy him something to drink since It’s so hot today. Drinking regime is important, but I don’t have to tell you about this.” She pointed out on his bottle and smiled a little bit. The smile, she got carried away a little bit. “Look, I have been thinking and I understand that you want to see him and get to know him but I we should talk first and discuss everything.”

Paxton knew that had been coming, so he just nodded. “Yeah.” he replied, leaning back on the picnic table he’d been standing by. “You’re right we do need to talk.” He replied, taking a long swig of his beer as he looked around. “What do we need to talk about? Cause I don’t know how we can have that conversation here, E. Where anyone could walk up to us.” He replied, gesturing around to the group of people mulling around them. “We could sneak into the school, for privacy, if you want to talk now though.”

“Thanks.” She murmured as she took the beer from him. Well, this was a weird situation. “Yeah, it’s nice here.” She said with a little shrug as she took a sip and then handed him the beer back. “They have good food and the atmosphere is pretty nice. It’s a start of the summer so everyone are happy and everyone are enjoying it here. It’s nice to see familiar faces which you haven’t seen for a long time.” That wasn’t implying him, or was it?

Paxton nodded, looking around the field, “Yeah, they’ve always gone out for this thing.” he replied with a smile, like he could almost picture coming to this thing as a kid. It had always been fun back then, playing the games and everything. He took a sip of his beer and shrugged, “Yeah, it’s nice seeing everyone.” he agreed. “So where’s Liam? Off playing one of those games they have set up or something?”

Well, Paxton was the reason why she wanted the beer so much and now, he was standing in front of her. Avoiding me forever? Yeah, that was exactly what she wanted to do and she wasn’t happy that he knew that, that he was right. Because of that, she wanted to prove him that he wasn’t right. “Okay, I’m asking you now. Can I take a sip?”

Paxton shrugged and held out his beer to Eden, “Go for it.” he replied. He was sure she felt as bad being around him as he did being around her, but he was going to keep pushing, especially because of their son. “So, enjoying the barbecue so far?”

“Wait…” Eden rushed to a person with a bottle of beer. “I’m pretty sure that you can understand me. I am a mother so I don’t drink, obviously. I just want a taste. I really need it. I hope you don’t mind.” She said as she reached for the bottle and took a long sip. “Thanks.” With a smile, she gave them the bottle back.

paxton turned around when he heard eden talking to someone else. after the person walked away from her, he cleared his throat, “you know you could have just asked me. unless you’re still planning on avoiding me forever.” he replied, taking a swig of his own beer.
