Shrugging it off instead of answering, Sirius wasn’t sure what he would even say. It was mostly an off-hand comment, but that wasn’t to say he didn’t at least partially believe it. Without the war, Sirius would be near useless, floundering. “Dunno. Probably home for a shower and a change or something.” Sirius wasn’t worried now, not any more than usual. They had all made it out okay, so he could breathe easy for the night. He wasn’t about to make his life any harder than it had to be. “Please.” He scoffed, rolling his eyes playfully. “Jealous? Get real, Prongs. You’re not my type.” He smirked as he teased him, huffing another solitary laugh before he downed the rest of his glass. “Good thing she’s got you lookin out for her then, isn’t it.” He shot him a crooked grin. They all cared about Lily just as much as she did about them - she was one of the gang now, and he couldn’t imagine it any other way. “Give her a few hours, then I’ll help you steal her away from the less fortunate if you want.”
James smirked, “Of course I’m your type. Brown hair, astonishing eyes, and the brightest smile you’ve ever seen-- it’s hard to believe you’ve kept your hands off me this whole time.” He laughed lightly at how easy it was for the two of them to fall back into their normal routine. Of course James was worried about Sirius, but he was glad everything could fall into place once again. Things couldn’t get better and they wouldn’t be able to form a new plan if they didn’t jump right back into action. They couldn’t mope around and allow the Death Eaters to hit them like this over and over-- they owed their friends so much better than that. “And how do you propose we do that? The hospital staff is just a bunch of ladies even more strict than McGonagall ever was.”

“He has things for us to do. And this is at the top of the list.” Alastor was going to have to take care of whatever the Order needed above his own needs—even if that meant pretending like the eye that should have been there still was. “No one is good at this stuff. But it must be done.” He paused. “I found out my brother died from the Death Eaters who killed him,” he added, putting a sheet of names in front of James. The don’t let that happen to anyone else was certainly implied. “Call them.”
James nodded and took the sheet from Alastor, growing quiet at the mention of his brother. “Uh-- my parents were dead for two days before the school got the letter from the hospital to me. By that point I wasn’t allowed to see them.” James frowned. “I’m not saying mines worse, there’s never a comparison with these types of things but I’m saying I understand.” James nodded at Alastor. “I understand how that sort of thing changes a person.” After his parents died, James didn’t tell a soul which caused kids in school to almost taunt him for not being the happy-go-lucky prankster anymore. No one except his closest friends asked if something else was going on.

Sitting in itself was a relief, and Lily all but melted into James’ side, letting her head fall against his shoulder. Now that she knew they were both safe, it was hard not to drift off, but there was still so much to do. It was maddening to think that even a year ago they were still in school, still just thought of as kids. Hard not to mourn that loss, too. Everything had changed and it wasn’t going to stop anytime soon.
Lily let out a shaky sigh and squeezed her eyes shut tight, but the image of Gideon crumbling in grief on the street came back to her, forcing them open again. She wanted more than anything to be able and take away their pain, but it was impossible. “There’s no chance in hell that attack was worth it. All those lives just … gone.” She frowned, the vocal fray returning, a crack on the last word. Silently, Lily squeezed his hand, for which of them she wasn’t sure. Undoubtedly they both needed it. “… I’ll help you. We can split the list of whoever needs to be told that.. that – you don’t have to do it alone.”
James kissed the top of Lily’s head, letting out a small sigh of relief as they sank into each other. “I love you--” James said softly, squeezing her gently as he let his eyes close so he could enjoy this brief moment of silence with her. They hadn’t said it often... James once blurted it out at the start of 7th year, he said it again when they graduated, and he was going to say it every day from now on. He never wanted Lily to have to wonder about when the last time James told her he loved her was. She needed to know every second because James didn’t know when all this could be taken right out of their grip.
“I don’t know what anyone was thinking... they weren’t thinking..” James frowned. When people were getting riled up and excited for invading the Ministry, James tried to beg people to think first before diving into something head on-- now they were going to have to deal with all of this. “Thanks.” He nodded, looking down at their intertwined fingers. “You’re really important to me, Lily. I-- I don’t know what I’d do without you...”

Peter paused. “If you want to go, go. I’m fine here.” Peter touched his nose gingerly, grateful for the fact that it was no longer broken. “That’s what it looked like,” he said, his voice hushed. “I don’t–” He paused for a moment. “I don’t know anything for sure. It’s–” He rubbed a hand across his chin. “It’s all a blur now. But can you see any of us killing someone?” Peter couldn’t imagine it.
James’ head shook, “No, I wanna be here.” He was still waiting on Remus-- once he knew all the boys were safe and sound, then he’d venture out. Lily was the strongest person James knew, he worried about her but it wasn’t like he needed to. She was strong and brave and never took no for an answer. James was just hoping he’d find her in better shape than he’d found Pete and Sirius in so far. “I saw Malfoy outside the Ministry-- he was trying to convince me we started the killings. If we started it, why the hell are our friends the majority of the dead?”
l-a-malfoy·:
Lucius couldn’t believe James would speak to him at a moment like this. Lucius knew exactly who had been behind the attack on the Ministry. His high ranking in the Death Eaters also meant he knew exactly what James’s code was. He wouldn’t believe the boy didn’t know about the plans to attack the Ministry. He narrowed his eyes at him. “There’s no good in finding bodies Potter. That is why they’re not coming out you ignorant git. Because The Order thought it would be a good idea to attack The Ministry.”
“Stop talking.” James turned back to face Lucius. “You have no bloody idea what you’re talking about, so shut up before you start spreading gossip that’ll only get more people hurt.” James was angry, and there was venom on his tongue as he snapped back at Lucius. He knew what had went on and who it was that went into the Ministry, but James also knew the Order had no intent of anybody dying. He had a good idea about who provoked that part.

Marlene had always loved being up high. At school, if she wasn’t out flying, then there was a good chance she could be found in the Astronomy Tower, and so when she’d seen James up on one of the roofs she hadn’t hesitated before going up to join him.
“Not bad,” she shrugged, sitting down beside him with one leg tucked up underneath her, the other free to dangle. “Quiet, but sometimes that’s not a bad thing.” After the battle the other day, the fact that things were quiet was actually nice. It was likely just the calm before the storm, she knew, but she would at least enjoy it while it lasted. “What about you? What’s brought you up here this evening?”
James liked to get away from people whenever his head felt too filled with stress and anxiety. He loved his friends to death, but sometimes he needed a getaway from the constant banter. “Quiet’s good.” He nodded, smiling softly as he twiddled his fingers together. “Uh-- I had to call families.” James frowned. “I had to tell the Catchloves and the Cresswells about what happened to Dirk and Greta.” He hated every second of breaking the horrible news, but James knew the families deserved to know.
