People shit on The Mandalorian a lot but it 100% is responsible for the resurgence of puppetry and practical effects in a lot of creature design and i think we owe it to Jon Faverau for making that choice and to Werner Herzog for pushing him to do it.

No but the baby yoda puppet was originally a placeholder to be replaced largely by CGI and Werner Herzog more or less threated to kill jon faverau if he didn't keep the puppet
Yup as Jon tells it, Werner called him a coward. So they went for it. And thank the gods!! He also said that the puppet makers kept "over delivering" and they thought they'd have a little guy who could move his head and they'd use it for shots of them in the distance- but Grogu moved so well, and it just kept getting better.
