my ultimate template for back when i was creating oc’s for my book ♥︎
the points i crossed out are not universal - as in they were specific things i needed to define for the setting/envoirment all my characters were in (a psychiatric ward)
i stopped writing but this was veeery helpful and fun so i thought i might share <3
Hi! I just wanted to ask if you had any tips for analysing characters as it’s something I struggle to do (especially for those I don’t like).
Hello! The short answer to that question would be to ‘think’.
In all honesty, I don't usually think about characters that don't interest me either, so, I understand. Analysation has become very natural to me now because I've trained my brain to think in a specific way over the past couple of years. It's a little hard to structurize it but I tried my best.
1. Ask a Question
Not that different from the scientific method. All analyses begin with a question. Don't ask vague questions. Ask very pointed questions. It'll help narrow down your options. Some of the questions I've asked in the past were: How would Sunday deal with jealousy? How would Dr. Ratio deal with grief? What would happen if the three bodies of Phainon jumped through your computer screen via the Golden Scapegoat? If you're unable to form the question, then look around for writing prompts. They might give you a headstart.
2. Frame Hypotheses
Assuming you've decided on your question, now you'll want to think of possible answers. This is essentially the brainstorming part. Here, we throw more and more questions at our subject matter and compile possible outcomes. Something you might wanna look at is what kind of environment you need for a successful brainstorming session. Do you need complete silence? Do you need music? Do you need to sit still and think? Do you need to be in motion? Do you need someone else to bounce off of ideas with? That kinda stuff.
3. Compare your Inferences with Other Sources
Once you have all possible hypotheticals in your hands, you'll have to compare it to the source material and/or other people's analyses (if they're available). If you cannot find anything close to what you're looking for in either, then just say, ‘this is my interpretation, apologies for any potential inaccuracies’.
4. Eliminate
If you have two or more answers to your question, weigh them and see which one feels more faithful. Then eliminate the others. And if you've found something discrediting your initial hypothesis in the previous step, eliminate it and start over.
5. Settle on Conclusion(s)
Self explanatory, no? But there's a little more to this. In my opinion, the most charming conclusions are always a little roundabout. They're not just simple statements, they're more like little nuggets that force the reader/listener to think as well. A new question for further pondering, so to say.
I wanted to ask you, a very professional tumblr writer, how do you get your ideas? Do they just POP UP and you fix them right away?
I wanted to get into writing, but i only have characteristics and no much special ideas for stories to show them naturally.
Thank you very much for your works!!
Hello nonnie! Ideas really do just pop up randomly for me. It's either I get a ton of them at once or I get none at all. And when I do get them, I usually let them simmer in my head for a bit before I even think of putting them into words for others. The brainstorming part decides the length. If the idea is brief, I'll just put my immediate thoughts into a Tumblr draft. If it requires a longer story, I'll open Ellipsus.
Now, the rule of thumb for getting better at any art form is consistency. There is no short-cut, you have to stick through it. Pick something you love, a character, a trope, or a franchise and keep on exploring it. Or maybe, pick a character you hate and write a story specifically to slander them. Worked for me once :3
Before you start though, I think you should really ask yourself "Why am I doing this?" I, for example, just wanted to get the ideas out of my head and hopefully improve my English along the way, and I ended up sticking along mostly for the latter. Determining your mindset in the beginning helps in the long run imo.
As for getting ‘special ideas’, my advice is to just... experience life. No, I'm actually serious. When I first tried getting into writing stories, I had this exact same issue of wanting to put something very and only unique. But I failed. And in hindsight, I know it was because I just didn't have enough life experience back then.
You know there's this running joke in fanfiction spaces about how middle/high schoolers somehow write the best fics, and it is true in some cases. But I think it has done some irreparable damage to the space as well. The best stories always come from the adults who have actually lived life, have a concrete view of the world and actually know what they're doing.
Anyone can write a story, but stories that stay with us? They always include a part of the writer's soul in them. When you actually have experience, even the most ‘overused trope’ will become a gem in your hands. So, I end this by giving you the scariest advice of all: go live life, interact with people, and reflect.
I'm finally dropping this vid 'cause y'all wouldn't stop asking for it)) They had this insane two-camera setup at the event, and I was low-key shook — felt like a whole TV icon! (The editor said that my performance had lost all focus and my energy was literally breaking the tech.)
this post contains mature content and some themes that can be distressing (classic yandere themes, kidnapping, violence...). do not interact with this post if you are sensitive to such topics and if you don't desire to be a person like that.
💌 for safety : you are immune to impulsively doing things that you will regret later. you are immune to traumatic events/developing trauma. you are immune to experiencing unwanted things.
💌 you naturally know your darling’s exact schedule, habits, likes, dislikes, and fears.
💌 you can easily keep tabs on your darling’s location, who they are talking to, and where they are going without ever getting caught or noticed.
💌 if anyone approaches your darling with romantic or malicious intent, you pick up on it immediately.
💌 you are completely silent and invisible when you want to be. you can slip into spaces, shadow your darling, or gather information without leaving a single trace.
💌 your mind is incredibly sharp. you can easily create scenarios to isolate your darling, make them rely entirely on you, or eliminate rivals easily.
💌 if you have to sabotage, ruin, or "eliminate" a romantic rival or a threat to your darling, you never leave behind evidence, DNA, or clues. the police or outside authorities never suspect you.
💌 you have access to funds, hidden locations, safehouses, and specific tools required to keep your darling safe and isolated from the rest of the world.
💌 you naturally have skills with your chosen tools or weapons (e.g., knives, poison, hacking tools etc.).
💌 you are jealous over and possessive of your darling.
💌 you are deeply, obsessively and intensely in love with your darling; your desire of having them, loving them and (your desire of) being loved by them is an undeniable and unerasable part of your being and personality.
💌 you can be sweet, caring, gentle, kind, thoughtful, considerate and loving with them, but you are completely unforgiving, merciless, cruel and violent towards people who threaten them and your relationship with them.
