First finished piece, completed in dec 2025. :') I was going to wait until framed but seven months later it's still hanging in my closet, whoops!
The design is based on ceremonial tampan, or 'ship cloths', from the Lampung region in Sumatra. These were used in important rites of passage between birth and death; laid underneath a baby for her first haircut, wrapped around marriage-gifts, draped on a wall in formal meetings between chiefs. Alongside the central ship imagery, tampan often feature many other motifs: a great diversity of animals ranging from the sky to the sea, human figures seen in various clothes or as riders, distinct plants and trees, suggestions of daily life.
