Mermaids (As Familiars/Spirits)
Itâs been a while since I made an original post (please forgive me ; A ;) so today Iâm going to talk about one of the most common things youâll hear about in sea witchcraft- mermaids.Â
From lore to people trying to actually BECOME ONE, I get so many questions about these mythical creatures and what they are.Â
First thingâs first- you canât become a mermaid. Iâm sorry to crush any dreams or anything but itâs either very hard to do or impossible.
Not only would you have to change your genetic code, youâd have to develop certain adaptations such as a swim bladder, gills and/or a huge lung, possibly echolocation abilities or another lens over your eyes so you can see underwater and to protect them, etc.Â
Continuing on, mermaids are called very different things depending on location and there are different versions of them, but they can all be considered âmermaids.â For example, the selkie, which is the Scottish, Irish, and Faroese version of a mermaid. This creature is a seal that can take off itâs skin when on land and put it back on in the water. Thereâs also lorelei,  merrow, undines, etc. But these all can be considered mermaids.Â
A common misconception is that mermaids and sirens are the same thing, but donât be confused. These two things are alike, but arenât the same. Sirens are half human half bird and sing to lure sailors to their doom. Mermaids are half human half fish and sing a âsiren songâ but they arenât sirens. (More here )
Mermaids can represent many things. They can represent mystery, independence, elusiveness, privacy, and seductiveness, or they can represent love, playfulness, emotion, sensuality, and curiosity. Whatever the case, they usually share the symbolism of beauty, love, and femininity.Â
Of course mermaids arenât real in this physical world, but they are definitely real in the spiritual/astral world. These creatures like to spend time alone and usually donât like to approach humans unless thereâs a strong connection to the sea or mermaids themselves. Since these creatures have been hunted and talked about for so long, they donât really like humans.Â
That said, you can always befriend them. Itâs like forming a bond with an introvert. Itâll take time, patience and effort, but all relationships do. They arenât just afraid of humans and the human world, they are also curious about it. Sharing knowledge with these creatures is a great way to form a bond with them. Theyâre close to dolphins, which represent intelligence, so mermaids usually crave intelligence and knowledge.
Not all mermaids are the same. Some might want to form a bond with you, while others might not ever want to see you again. This just depends on the mermaid you are making contact with.Â
As spirits, they are usually causing trouble with visitors in the spirit realm as well as spirits themselves. They like to play around, and although usually harmful, they can be ferocious if needed. That said, please donât try and force yourself into something with a mermaid c:
Theyâre usually found wherever there is flow like the ocean or the ocean itself. Spirits can dwell anywhere on this earth, and the most common place for a mermaid is, of course, the ocean. Meditating on the beach, on a boat, or a raft can help you possibly encounter one of these creatures. You can also search for them in dreams, but they arenât as common as they are by a source of water.Â
They are also very good at storm witchcraft, moon witchcraft, and sea witchcraft. Theyâre very resourceful and know plenty of spells! Some even say they can conjure a storm, tell when a storm is coming, or help you conjure one. They also have a strong connection to the moon and to aquatic animals.Â
Mermaids as Familiars/Spiritual Companions and Friends
Mermaids are extremely loyal and strong. Theyâre deep connection with water can help strengthen any spell, especially ones that include water or purification spells. They are also good with attraction and beauty spells.Â
As a familiar, a mermaid is incredibly strong with aiding spells, especially with ones that include spiritual aspects. They also are very protective of friends once they have them because of their loyal nature. Sometimes these familiars can also be playful and pull pranks at times, but these are harmless most of the time or theyâre trying to teach you an important lesson. Having these creatures as a familiar usually means you have a very strong connection to the sea and water in general, and no matter how far you are away from it, the connection wonât break.Â
As spiritual companions and friends, they are some of the best to have. They are very wise and can teach you many things. They are great friends and aid in protection when you are traveling through the spirit/astral realm, as well as guiding you and talking to you along the way. Having mermaids as a familiar, spiritual companion or friend can help you with bonds between you and aquatic animals.Â
Becoming friends with these creatures is not only a feat, but also a life long relationship that will guide you and push you in the right direction to the path you want to walk on.Â
