It is official!!!!
Starting this Spring, you can convert any parking lot at your next event into a skateboard park through the Prince George’s Parks & Recreation Skate Mobile!!!
Allowing space and opportunity at the Cosca Skateboard Park & Mural Garden!
Planning for a new regional community center in the Southern Area of Prince George’s County is well underway. This facility, currently referred to as the Southern Area Aquatic and Recreation Complex, will include indoor aquatic space, a gymnasium, a fitness room and flexible programmable space. It will be constructed on property owned by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) – Brandywine Area Park – located just north of the intersection of Missouri Avenue and Brandywine Road.
The Southern Area Aquatic and Recreation Complex will be a multi-generational facility, as envisioned in the Adopted Formula 2040 Functional Master Plan for Parks, Recreation and Open Space. Multi-generational facilities provide an array of programs, simultaneously, to serve the recreation and leisure needs and interests of an entire family - not just one age group.
Shaymar Higgs and Justin Porter, who were also instrumental in petitioning and designing the Cosca Regional Skateboard Park was also selected to be on the Advisory Committee of the forthcoming Southern Area Aquatic & Recreation Center!

The Arc of Prince George’s County in partnership with the Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center commissioned Shaymar Higgs to sew together decorated quilt squares decorated by their students following several art workshops.
The completed quilt is on display at the Temple Hills office of The Arc.

So I recently made the transition to Florida from the millions of jobs that I was working back in Maryland and Washington DC, to get back into the creative space and vibes of sewing, gardening, and all things Tropical Weather Life! Before leaving, The Creator would close doors that I wanted to keep open, while leaving other cracked..... Since getting to Florida, the transition was a little rocky since leaving all of the students, friends, amazing co-workers, and business associates in the bitter cold of The City, but the soul has awaken again! Thus far, these photos are a very small collection of the collection that I am putting together! The works are based on the African-American Quilt Code, mixed with my observations of the rewriting (and erasing) of histories, knowledge of self, and being an individual in a system full of clones! In the middle of my works, is a sketch sent to me by a graffiti buddy that reads “follow your dreams” with the number “10″. He had no idea, but the number 10 IS MY THANG, and the words speak oh so true to my reality, and my motivation while creating!
Until the rest of the collection is complete.....
Be Well and Be Great!
Custom orders have been coming in as of lately! Handmade shirts, each design is hand cut and printed in its very unique way, making them all one-of-a-kind!

Another successful Cosca Skateboard Camp came to an end October 2015. These classes are definitely a reminder as to why we started this skateboard process in the first place! Giving the community youth a safe, positive environment to nurture skills that would never be learned in front of video games and social media apps!
Super Special Thanks to The DC Wheels, which is a charity organization, founded in 2007, with the focus on changing and saving lives through the power of skateboarding!
This year, we added a new award category, The Skate Girls Tribe Award! In collaboration with Spacy Cloud and Skate Girls Tribe, we were able to highlight the diversity and further empower the female skaters that we taught this camp session!
This could not have been possible without Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission, Prince George’s Parks & Rec, La-Juan Lester, our Skate Instructors: Shaymar, Rmell, Mia, and of course the parents and guardians who trust us to train their youth in this ‘totally safe’ sport of skateboarding!
To find out about upcoming classes, visit the PG Parks website, call the Cosca Regional Park Admin Office, or stay tuned to the website for future updates!
Another one of the perks of working with so many organizations between Maryland and Washington, DC is the networking with huge organizations such as The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts!
The Millennium Stage hosted the most epic skateboarding extravaganza imaginable, directly in front of the infamous Kennedy Center; skate bowl, obstacles, and live bands included! The who’s who of skateboarding history and culture was in Washington, DC and with Prince George’s Parks & Rec, we took a group of regulars from the Cosca Skateboard Park to see everything firsthand!
The photos explain so much of the day....
As always, respect s given where respect is due: THANKS to Jimmy Pelletier of The DC Wheels, Diana Ezerins of The Kennedy Center, La-Juan Lester of Prince George’s Parks & Rec, and Mr. Frank McKnew for allowing the use of your amazing photos!

Peerless Creatives Founder and Lead Designer, Shaymar Higgs was approached by one of his friends who was graduating from The George Washington University, to drop his patchwork magic on her commencement cap... The finished product was featured on The GW University Facebook page and website as their main photo for the 2015 Commencement Ceremony, and who knows where else!
Thank you Brae Bower for the opportunity and Congratulations on your 2015 graduation!
Since then, orders have been coming in for graduation cap covers! Yours could be next..... Send a message to find out more information on how to get your custom, patchwork commencement cap cover!
Leanne Brown, author of this amazing cookbook and "eating cheap” guide, ‘Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4/Day”!
Backstory:: A little over a year ago, I came across the Kickstarter for the first edition of this book while buzzing around the Interwebs for exciting new recipe ideas to teach in my youth cooking class, as well as my community efforts with non-profit, Each One Teach One. Unfortunately, the Kickstarter was over, but something moved me to email Leanne in hopes that there was some way to still get in on the action. Especially since she raised well over $140,000, and with all of my non-profit jobs, the fine print on the page mentioned that she would be donating copies to not-for-profit organizations! *win* So long story short, I sent an email detailing my many classes and how the demographics that she is focusing on are exactly my students and their families. So The Universe worked in our favor, and a few months later, after paying just for shipping, a small, but heavy box arrives to my door crammed full of 20 of these amazing books! A few months following that box, I received an email stating that I was selected for ANOTHER FREE BOX of books!!!!!!!!!! The families were oh so grateful to receive the books!!! Thank you Leanne Brown and your thesis statement that turned into such a useful tool for anyone and everyone to have in their kitchen!
Fast forward to October 2015, I come across an advert for her book tour which came to Upshur Bookstore in Washington, DC! I could not miss such an opportunity to finally meet Leanne to remind her [as I am sure everyone says it, including the Washington Post] how great of a resource this is for nonprofit organizations and their clients, who can purchase this book at a discounted rate. Best part of the night, was chatting with her to find out that next she is considering a children’s book, and that she remembered my name [how many Shaymar’s could there be, right]! Such a beautiful and passionate woman, and I am grateful to have found out about the book and to have met her! Hopefully for the next book, we will be working together [I did through that out there to her]!
Did I forget to mention, that the book is FREE for download online.!?

Southeast Asia or Bust!
The countdown has begun to our backpacking trip through Southeast Asia this Summer.... And you can help make it even more amazing by donating to our GoFundMe campaign!
http://www.GoFundMe.com/DCtoSEAsia
Food, art, culture, and family are staples that often make up the framework of the community. Although our countries are separated by thousands of miles and an ocean, deep down, we have more similarities than differences. The World Wide Community Quilt Project celebrates what makes our homes so special! Starting here in DC and finishing in Southeast Asia, we will distribute fabric squares that will be decorated based on the theme of: "what does community look like/mean to you?" Upon completion, squares will be sewn together with fabric collected along the journey! The project is being led by Shaymar Higgs, a wearer of many hats - from pastry chef to skateboarding, textile, and visual teaching artist. While working as a fine dining pastry chef, Shaymar developed a wheat allergy that put an instant shift in his life and career path. Around that same time, Shaymar started working for Washington DC-based non-profit, Project Create as a teaching artist to homeless and underserved youth in Washington, DC. Shortly afterward, Shaymar brought together the partnership of his other employer, The Fridge art gallery and Project Create, to offer free art classes to the community youth. During this time is where Shaymar and Jacob met, and they have been friends ever since! In the summer of 2014, Jacob went to Thailand and Cambodia for vacation, and brought back photos and souvenirs that started the research of this culturally rich region! The World Wide Community Quilt Project will showcase what makes us all one community of People! While in Southeast Asia, we will have the opportunity to: 1) Enjoy an entire culture of largely fresh, regionally-specific gluten free meals; 2) Collect fabrics from the amazing textile industry in Southeast Asia; 3) Learn the history of a region of people who have overcome being marginalized and even had genocide committed against them; 4) Bring back visual memories and stories of visitors and citizens of the region that will continue to share the strength that make us all One People!
The first official Beginners Skateboarding Camp at the Cosca Regional Skateboard Park of Clinton, Maryland!

It was an amazing experience and we have definitely gained 12 new skaters for life!
