Slides were used to teach history of art and architecture since around 1880s until they were replaced by digital modes such as PowerPoint. Since the founding of the Fogg Art Museum in 1895, the Fine Arts Library has served the needs of teaching faculty, art museum staff, undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and historians at Harvard and around the world. By 1920s, many universities had slide libraries, including Harvard. Since then, over the decades, FAL has acquired over 600,000 slides, mainly from the courses taught by Harvard faculty for teaching.
In the past couple years, the Fine Arts Library’s Digital Images and Slides Collection has been engaged in a large-scale move of our 35 mm slides to off-site storage at the Harvard Depository.
This collection of over 600,000 slides documents the history of world art and architecture up to the early 2000s. Access for retrieval of items needed by future researchers is being provided through creating HOLLIS records. We have digitized most of the slides, but the archiving of this significant teaching format, nearly in its original arrangement, will serve as a valuable record both of the past art historical interests of faculty and students, and as a tangible reminder of bygone classroom teaching practices.
These are some samples from our slide collections. We’ll be showing some of these slides at our Open House on September 18th.
The most expensive dolls’ house in the world, the Astolat Dollhouse Castle, created by miniaturist Elaine Diehl between 1974 and 1987. It is 9 feet in height, has 29 rooms and about 30,000 miniatures pieces in its collection, but the displays are rotated and only about 10,000 are displayed at any one time. The house was inspired by Tennyson’s ‘Lancelot and Elaine’, which begins with the words ‘Elaine the fair, Elaine the loveable, Elaine, the lily maid of Astolat’. Its’ great price (officially valued at $8.5 million) is mostly due to the unique, hand-crafted objects, many made out of costly materials such as gold and lapis lazuli and commissioned from famous artists. Furnishings include original sculptures and oil paintings, portrait miniatures, hand-sewn tapestries, silverware, a working dumbwaiter, carved mouldings, chandeliers, mirrors, inlaid bathrooms, parquet floors, and hand etched wood panels. It also contains the smallest antique Bible in the world.

“Shadow and light are the most stable and perfect tools of creation: they unite colors, shapes, and dimensions,” says Moldovan artist Sergiu Ciochină, adding that “shadows move us through diversity, enhancing our perception, while light fills us with the joy of discovery.” In saturated hues, he captures dappled sunlight as it filters through the trees and the rich tones of the golden hour as it casts deep bluish-purple shade onto the sides of houses.
Taking cues from the Impressionists, Ciochină focuses on the nuances of light and its ability to reveal outlines and forms. He works in thick, impasto oil paint on board, emphasizing the shapes of windows, doors, and stoops and transforming otherwise ordinary buildings into compositions glowing with the patterns of foliage, architectural angles, and the texture of brushstrokes. “The symbiosis I create between nature and architecture is intended to evoke a love for space,” he says.
