Technically, I'm a museum wanderer in my day job. But 5 and a half years later, the whimsy has been sucked out of it. Bah.
There's little feeling of wonder left. It comes so seldomly now.
So for over a month and a half I’ve been told in my Creative writing MA class that my writing is too poetic and abstract to work in the form of a novel and that I need to simplify my meanings and sentences. I did as I was told and lost all interest in writing if I have to write in the same style that every other novelist does. Today I received this note from a classmate and didn’t realise how much I needed to hear it. Don’t change your art just because other people don’t get it. Don’t change your style to fit in with everyone else. It’s your story not theirs.
This post is 4 years old, but for anyone who needs to hear it I want to tack on the advice my Creative Writing professor told the class I was in: "Not everyone is going to get what you're trying to do. So a lot of the advice your classmates write on your papers might feel Wrong to you. If it feels Wrong and you don't think they understand your story, don't take their advice because they are not your audience."
Sounds like the initial advice for OP to tone down her natural voice was incorrect, but thankfully one of her classmates that was part of the audience wants to hear that voice.
“But it normalizes—”
IT’S TEN FANFICS ON AO3 FOR A FANDOM THAT NOT EVEN ONE-SEVENTH OF THE POPULATION OF PLANET EARTH KNOWS EXISTS. IT ISN’T “NORMALIZING” ANYTHING, KAREN. STOP CLUTCHING YOUR PEARLS BEFORE YOU CHOKE YOURSELF
If you’re going after fanfic authors instead of Hollywood directors/bestselling authors, you aren’t worried about what’s being ‘normalized’.
You just want an easy target.

Would be asleep right now, but there are Fictional Characters to imagine in emotional situations. You know how it is.
The thing that really hits different for me about Yuna and Tidus as a FF pairing (besides the whole "dream" thing) can literally be captured by the post-Yevon mess reveal scene.
When Tidus could tell how it's hurting Yuna that her faith's wavering after finding out about Yevon's corruption and how its teachings won't really end Sin permanently, he came to her and listened to her talk about how hard it was for her. He suggested a way out and promised to try his best to help her. The way out might sound more like a distant dream (because dream Zanarkand... don't really exist), but he really was trying to tell her there's still something beautiful to look forward to out there.
But when Yuna insisted that she just can't go because she feel obligated to fulfill her duties, Tidus didn't push it. Instead, he comforted her, and told her he'll stay, no matter what.
That's the kind of love, you know. I mean... the others aren't so different in reaction fron Tidus but he's different in a sense that he's not from Spira, and he doesn't believe in Yevon. In fact, he's always questioning it. It must have taken a lot for Tidus to hold back from pushing her, after the whole Yevon mess was revealed and knowing that if Yuna continue the pilgrimage, she'll die.
Yet, he chose to support her choice, and stayed with her. He didn't throw tantrums or anything, he just made it known to her that he'll be there for her.

it’s perfect
Hard to believe it’s been nearly three years since having conversations with strangers became a public health risk. Humans of New York changed a lot during those years. The element of randomness was removed. The stories became more in-depth, and carefully structured. Often I’d work on a single story for weeks, and unspool it over the course of an entire day. The process was very rewarding in a ‘writerly’ sort of way, but these past few weeks I’ve been getting back to my roots: walking all over the city, stopping strangers. I’ve realized how much I missed it: the physicality of the work, the spontaneity, the city itself. But mainly the endless, small moments of connection. There’s something about sharing the same space with people: hearing the same sounds, breathing the same air. There’s a magic that can’t be transmitted through a computer screen. It’s bringing me a lot of joy, so I’m going to keep doing it. For the foreseeable future, Humans of New York is going back to what it used to be: random conversations on the streets of New York City. Hopefully you’ll enjoy meeting these people as much as I have.
