Thank You YYC

After 5 years, @peopleofYYC is shutting down.

Thank you to all of the wonderful folks who have acted as curators, and to everyone who followed and engaged with the account. This project wouldn’t have been possible without you.

This isn’t a definite goodbye, it’s just a ‘maybe we’ll see you in a bit’ – the admin just needs to take a much needed break from the rocur life.

There may also be new #yyc rocur projects started in the weeks to come (I encourage it!) and information will be posted here as it’s found. In the meantime, @DoggosofYYC is our highly recommended follow.

Week 261: Erin

Hi friends! I’m Erin, the person behind this @peopleofcalgary machine.

I’m originally from Toronto, but moved to Alberta when I finished my undergrad about 5 years ago. (5 years? Already? Jeeze). I work in oil and gas as a process engineer, and up until about 9 months ago I worked at a remote plant way up in NE Alberta - but now I’m a downtown regular!

Outside of work I usually share lots about training as a competitive powerlifter, or pictures of my cat Kilo. There’s also my wonderful boyfriend Christian, who’s currently working on his Doctorate of Physiotherapy in Melbourne. Yup, the one in Australia. 

After 5 years of running people of Calgary, I’ve decided to wind this account down. I’ve got lots on the go this week, but I’ll try to take some time and go back through some cool highlights from this account over the past 5 years!

Week 258: Nathan

Nathan Woolridge is a Calgary-based journalist currently studying for his Bachelor of Communications, with a major in Journalism and a minor in Political Science. He has been published in the Calgary Journal and by the CBC. Nathan has a passion for journalism and media. He loves to be creative and has always had an entrepreneurial and marketing spirit. He started his first business before he was in high school and opened his first store when he was 16. Some of Nathan's hobbies currently include scrolling through Twitter, watching movies, and developing media and technology platforms.

Born and raised Calgarian (as was my dad – goes back to when there were like 11 people here who didn’t take the Bering land bridge) – working hard every day to make the world a safer place, I’m not happy if I don’t get my 12,000 steps in, I have more hobbies than I have time, I think I can build anything – I love Cooking, Camping, and the living aspects of nature (sorry geologists), too many years in school to not try and look for the big picture, and as for goals, always aim to be the second most sarcastic person in the room – and GO STAMPS GO #IsItJuneYet – did I mention BBQ, like real BBQ, like drive to Texas BBQ, like leave now?

Rae is an Alberta Party volunteer, a gluten-free crusader, and a happy mom and auntie! When she's not working or volunteering, singing with the Youth Singers of Calgary's ENCORE division, and hanging out with her family, she spends entirely too much time on Twitter.

Alicia Hope-Ross is a social media manager and non profit consultant. A rare born and raised Calgarian, Alicia has a huge passion for professional wrestling and local charities. Alicia has worked as a fundraiser at various non-profits throughout the city including the Alberta Cancer Foundation and STARS Air Ambulance. Prior to her social media and non profit career Alicia was in newscaster, and is a proud graduate of Mount Royal University's Broadcasting program. Born and raised in small town Nova Scotia, Corinne moved to Calgary almost a decade ago after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Journalism. Although she didn’t end up working in the journalism field, she does enjoy writing & social media.Her hobbies include: watching hockey, binge watching Netflix, reading and keeping up to date with anything pop culture related! And while you can take the girl out of the East Coast, you can’t take the East Coast out of the girl ;)

Week 250: Carly

I spent my childhood in South Africa, I studied neuroscience at university in London. I met my demi-Parisian (French-raised, Brit family) husband Jonathan whilst studying. I worked in Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s Disease research for a couple of years. We moved to YYC together in 2014 and felt right at home, loved every minute and thought we would stay for a long time. A job opportunity brought us on a Roman adventure almost one year ago. Now I teach science to Italian sixth graders & I like to say I speak the second most eyetalian in our household (of two!) I love to read, draw, cook, eat, chat. I’m coming back to YYC for the summer - my family lives in Alberta, and I hope to earn my Canadian citizenship too.

Heather is a communication specialist and corporate storyteller who sometimes laughs at her own jokes and hides under the bed after writing scary short stories. She is an awkward word nerd who loves travelling, writing about her travels and coming home to Calgary in equal measure. She loves belly dancing, MRU, politics and scotch, and combining all three with food and friends makes for a memorable YYC weekend. Heather is a mother to an almost-nurse, a sister and daughter to the formidable Wilkey clan, and happily unmarried for 24 yrs. Her first novel 'Blank Slate' comes out in 2019.

Week 248: Kent

Kent is another cautionary tale of improv and standup comedy. He wasn’t classically trained in the arts, so he had to pick it up on the mean streets of Calgary, studying with any troupe that would have him. Performing in basements and disused automotive shops, he caroused with clowns and rubbed elbows with magicians (who have notoriously guarded elbows). He has found himself cast in shows such as An Improv Hamlet (Improv Guild) and An Improvised History of Calgary (McMaster/ Calgary 2012). Since 2011 he has been performing and producing the Late Night Cabaret for the Calgary Fringe. I've grown up in Calgary and love seeing how the city continues to change and evolve - but I still envision something better for everyone in our city, including my daughters and the generations of little humans to come. I'm passionate about building community and currently sit as the president of our community association (Haysboro). I am a maker with my company called Agnes in August - this year I'm transitioning to a new company that is a spin off called AKIN - a place for makers & local shops to connect, learn, grow, and build our little pocket of the economy. I coach from Strides Running Store (marda loop location) with a focus on technique, love of running, and short yet effective workouts. I've got two girls - four and seven; love heading out to the mountains; enjoy good books; and love watching TV. How I get it all in is the greatest mystery of my life.
