Dominique couldnât deny that it was awkward to be wearing Jaxonâs motherâs clothes, but on the other hand, she hadnât had new clothes in so long and it was definitely hard to resist the opportunity. Jaxon had seemed okay with it, so she had selected some leggings, that were only slightly too big, and a long top that she belted and folded up the sleeves. She had managed to wash and brush her hair so it had sort of returned to itâs natural golden waves and her face was clean from the mud, dust and blood - though the scars and recent scabs remained.Â
    A survivorâs badge of honour.Â
She loaded up her pack quickly and quietly, making sure that anything that was necessary was there, including the food and ammunition. A knife was strapped to her waist and the shotgun across her back - she was ready.Â
Jaxon hadnât been able to sleep the night before. Heâd spent several hours tossing and turning as he tried so hard to relax, but sleep never truly came. At some point before the sunlight began to bleed through the window onto the carpeted floor of the living room, heâd slipped away. Heâd gone to his motherâs room, sat on the edge of her bed and heâd thought about her. He remembered her laugh, smile, warm and accepting arms. He remembered her kind and gentle words and, for the first time since the apocalypse started a month ago, he cried. Not very much because he was still a teenage boy and that isnât a normal thing to do, but a little. The small part of him that still relied on her had shown itself. He knew he had to find her. And not just for his own sake. Jaxon was determined not to let anyone or anything lay a hand on his mother. Not after her life. Even if the world was falling apart around them, he was going to find a way to her and find a way to keep her safe.
The more he meditated on these thoughts, the more he realized heâd already started to feel the same for the girl in the other room. Not that he needed to be near her or relied on her for support, but that he was going to protect her. Heâd seen her cuts and scars. Heâd heard her painful story. He was done letting people go through things like that. He couldnât protect the whole world but he didnât see why he couldnât protect two people.Â
So when the warmth of sunshine brushed his skin, he got up and started packing. He grabbed every weapon he could find and tried to figure out a logical way to carry it. He had a knife, two pistols, and a machete. In his bag, he had an extra set of clothes for himself, a picture of his mother, extra ammo,  and as much food and water as he could carry. He wouldnât let anything get in their way.Â
Shouldering the bag, he turned to face Dominique. âYou ready?âÂ
rvnner:
despite the banging on the doors and the growls from outside the shack, the man took a moment to spin around and face her halfway, shotgun still aimed at the wooden doors that seemed ready to collapse at any moment. forced to shout above the chaos of the situation; the situation where they could be getting eaten at any moment. âlook, i get it okay! i get it, maâam, i ainât askinâ you to become my best pal or my wife â i get it! iâm a stranger! but youâre gonna have to trust me sooner or later or we are both royally screwed!â
Sheâd been there, alone, for months and hadnât had a problem, but this man decides to show up one day and her whole world goes to shit. Well, to be fair, her whole world had already gone to shit a while ago and sheâd been starving for two days now. Still, sheâd been doing fine without him and he had to come and mess that all up. The dead were at her doorway. It was a really sucky doorway, too so she wasnât exactly sure how they were going to get out of this. The dead always seemed to win.Â
As he stood there, yelling at her with his back pressed against the door, she wasnât entirely sure she was fond of him. But the world was a horrible place, so what choice did she have?
Grabbing a knife, she rushed to help him hold the door. âWell, what do you suggest then, Baseball?â the first nickname that came to mind for the cap wearing man.Â
cosmiicborn:
&&. MOTHER AND SON.
âlot better than most of us anticipated,â ben confirmed, grin spread across his lips as his gaze flickered over to the excited youth standing near the womanâs side. âhell of a lot more grateful for the sun than the downpour we were all fearinâ.â
thumbs hooked lazily on the pockets of his uniform he straightened, nodding up at the clear skies to enunciate his words before directing towards the teen, âyou a fan then?â
Jennaâs gaze moved over the athlete slowly and allowed the two to talk. He seemed nice, which wasnât what Jenna really expected from a pro. She always thought many of them (most of them) were snobs. She had been an athlete herself, knew the way things worked and how it felt to be a part of something everyone watched. Her time in sports was over, however, due to Mason growing up. Sheâd wanted to be a part of his life so she had stepped away from it all.Â
âYes, sir,â Mason couldnât help himself. His grin spread because this guy was STILL talking to them. âIâm a huge fan. Iâve been attending games for... as long as I can remember. When we were stateside, I mean.âÂ
Volleyball training had meant that Jenna really needed to play in leagues overseas between Olympic years. That was just another reason Jenna stopped and returned home. Mason needed a proper high school and college experience. She had decided to make that happen.Â

Dominiqueâs brow furrowed in confusion and she cocked her head at him, pushing her hair over her shoulder.Â
âHmm?â she answered, âOf course, what is it?âÂ
Jaxon scratched his head again and folded his arms, âWell... Do you sing?â He asked, âI donât know, I suck at it and I suppose Iâm tired of the world being full of the sounds of death.â
It felt really dumb of him to ask that, but he really thought hearing someone sing could bring a little light into the situation.Â

Dominique nodded her head, âShe was,â she said, âMy dad was amazing as well.âÂ
She listened to him talk and smiled slowly, trying to be encouraging. âThat sounds good.â she said, âIf someone is like that, you donât need them in your life after all.âÂ
Jaxon hummed and folded his arms. He wasnât sure what to say, truthfully. He was tired, he was nervous, excited. His mother was alive, or had been. He had a friend now, or at the very least an ally. She seemed very nice, as well, which was hard to come by in the crazy, shit world.Â
âCan I ask you a weird question?â Blue eyes lifted from the floor and swept over her once more. âI suppose itâs more of a favor than a question.âÂ
cosmiicborn:
benâs eyes followed her movements, and the WINCE did not escape him as he pursed his lips and shook his head; restlessly moving, with sneakers scuffing the pavement, arms stoic just before his sides as if she might fall again and he would have to CATCH her.Â
âare ya sure?â he ventured, sounding unsure himself. âyer arm is all banged up.â
âIâm fine,â Jenna promised as her arms fell to her sides. âI really need to get to work, but if youâre really concerned,â She dug through her purse and pulled out a business card before offering it to him, âText me later, Youâll see that Iâm fine and have some peace of mind.â Jenna had easily noticed how t e n s e he was, and maybe that was her fault for falling, but she thought that it might be possible to alleviate some of that.
The card read:
Jenna H. Winters Hope Home for Troubled Teens Domestic Violence Social Work (312) 786 - 3114

heâd cleaned up just briefly, a splash of water to his face to cool off, before heâd gone out beyond the bleachers still in a dirt-laden uniform to rest during the intermission. it wasnât often that team members actually dared to come out without the rest or MINGLE with civilians and game-watchers but he was still rather new and besides, he enjoyed it. when he saw a young woman with whom he PRESUMED was her son he offered a smile. âenjoyinâ the game?â
Jenna smiled just slightly as she watched her son try to stop himself from fangirling over the fact that a baseball player was talking to them. âHello,â She greeted warmly, âYes, weâre rather enjoying it tonight. Isnât the weather just beautiful?âÂ
âHey,â Mason finally managed, sliding his hands in his jacket pockets and trying to look cool. The sixteen-year-old was the first baseman for his high school baseball team with dreams of making it to the big leagues some day. Anyone like this talking to him was like a dream come true.Â

Dominque nodded her head slowly, âAnimal attack, left him with some scars across his face. Everything thought that mama was going to be superficial and leave him but she stayed, loved him even more if that was possible.â She joined him, leaning back against the couch with her arms around her legs.
--
Jaxon hummed, opening a bottle of water and taking a slow drink. "Sounds like a nice woman," he screwed the cap back on and placed it on the ground beside him. "I never knew my dad. Mom says that's a good thing." He still got curious, however. Who wouldn't? Or that's how he validated his own curiosity.
He shifted his weight to get a little more comfortable before turning to her. "Guess he was shit guy. Cheated. More than once, I think. Mom hasn't dated a lot in my life though. But recently she met some guy, guess they hit it off. Course that was before all this went down. He's probably dead now. Which I hate to say cause mom seemed to like him," he shrugged one shoulder, "But we were always just fine with the two of us. She was always happy, always caring. She could get mad, of course, but the only time she really shut me down was when I asked about my dad."
Zombie Apocalypse AU
âBeautiful?â Dominique offered, though it still hurt to even think about her parents, let alone talk about them. âAmazing, she was the strongest woman I knew. Loved fiercely, especially after my dad had his accident.â
--
"Accident?" Jaxon asked, though he would understand if she didn't want to talk about it. He scooped more beans out of the can and kept his eyes on her as he ate it. The teen leaned back against the couch, finding himself comfortable for the first time in a while because he was home and not alone.
Zombie Apocalypse AU
Dominique nodded her head, sitting crossed-legged on the floor and doing the same.
âItâs funnyâ she said, âI donât even like beans that much. Never touched them when I was a kidâ
-- "Mom always had this one recipe for baked beans. She would always cook it when I invited friends over or any time we had anything remotely barbecue," he smiled fondly, "They were insanely good." He put a spoonful of beans in his mouth and let silence fall as he ate before he added, "What about you? What was your mom like?"
he pulled her up without incident, ensuring that they were a GOOD several inches into the pavement, away from the active streets. still looking a bit sheepish, releasing her wrist once she seemed stable and rubbing the back of his neck, lips pursed. there was no ANGER, which he found fortunate since many in this city he had learned were not so tolerant.
ben nodded at her words, taking them as a good sign. âyeah, yeah â still, are you sure youâre ALRIGHT?â it seemed to him she had hit the ground quite hard. seeing they were outside a market, he shifted towards the doors. âshould i get you ice? or somethinâ?â
--
Jenna shook her head "No. No I'm fine," she reached up with her other arm to fix her glasses (because modern AU with glasses seems cute and I like it) As she did so, she exposed a pretty nasty scrape on that elbow. It stung as she moved it , causing her to wince.
"I'm honestly fine," she assured him, stepping back. She didn't trust most people.
ââ @per-ignem IS OFFERED A THINGÂ ââ
âsorry, iâm so sorry, maâam.â ben stumbled, staring at the woman he had knocked to the ground when heâd accidentally STEPPED into ongoing traffic and was forced to back up swiftly. he blinked swiftly at her as she lay on the asphalt, before reaching down and grabbing her wrist to PULL her up. âare you alright??â
Jenna had been rather surprised when she'd been knocked back onto the ground. She had managed to make her way through this city for years now without much issue and now she sat there with a surprised look on her face, staring up at the man responsible. She wasn't mad by any means, but she certainly had been shaken from her usual trance on her way to work.
She allowed him to help her up, steadying herself on his arms.
"I'm fine," she promised, reaching to fix her hair, "And it's alright. Better I hit the ground than you end up six feet under it."

Jaxon turned to look at her, gaze sweeping over her form quickly again as he swallowed back his emotions, âYeah. Fine.â
He rubbed his very define jaw, scratching at the stubble there. He should shave when he got the chance. He always liked to be clean shaven. Made him feel in control of something in this world.
He felt odd seeing his motherâs clothes on a different person, but he knew that clean clothing was hard to come by and that his mother would have offered if sheâd been there.
âWhy donât you eat? Just pick out a few things and Iâll keep watch.â
âJoin me.â Dominique said, sitting on the floor. âItâs quiet and itâs not like we wonât here the infected coming, hm?â she said. It wasnât as if they were quiet after all.Â
She still struggled with talking about the problems outloud - it made it seem more real instead of a nightmare that she was just going to wake up from eventually.Â
Jaxon considered that a moment before nodding slowly, "Okay."
He grabbed a can of beans and started to open it, stomach growling now as he realized how hungry he was. "I never thought I would be so happy just to hold a can of beans."

With a scratch of his head, Jaxon suggested, âWhy donât you go ahead and change and Iâll watch. KEEP watch. Iâll keep watch,â He blushed hard all the way up into his ears. âoh smooth move, idiotâ
Jaxon shook his head and pushed past her and back into the living room.Â
Blue eyes scanned the room and he rubbed his jaw. The pictures of his mother and himself all around the room almost hurt now. It had been so long since heâd admitted he loved her actually using the words. Heâd gotten in the habit of being a good âteenâ and just saying âyou too, mom. you know it.â before he left for school in the mornings.Â
He missed her. He missed her more than he cared to admit.Â
Dominiqueâs eyes widened as he spoke, and she couldnât help the small chuckle that escaped her lips as she nodded her head.Â
âOkayâ she said, and walked back into the bedroom to change into some of Jennaâs clothing. It felt weird, changing into the clothes of a woman that could possibly be dead but needs must. She pulled an old t-shirt over her head and some shorts on to sleep in and then walked back out to see Jaxon stood there.Â
âAre you alright?â she asked gently.Â
Jaxon turned to look at her, gaze sweeping over her form quickly again as he swallowed back his emotions, "Yeah. Fine."

Dominique felt his eyes on her and a faint blush appeared lightly on her cheeks. She looked back at him, meeting his warm brown eyes and following the lines of his face and chest - defined and muscular from this goddamn apocolypse. She was incredibly attracted to him, but it had been so long that she barely knew what that feeling was or how to identify it.Â
And even if she did realise, was that feeling (for someone she had known less than a day) just because it would have been so long since she had even seen another person?Â
With a scratch of his head, Jaxon suggested, âWhy donât you go ahead and change and Iâll watch. KEEP watch. Iâll keep watch,â He blushed hard all the way up into his ears. âoh smooth move, idiotâ

Dominique smiled again, her own blue eyes crinkling slightly as her smile became more genuine.Â
âYes,â she said, feeling something in the pit of her stomach that she hadnât done for a long, long time now. Hope. Â
Jaxonâs gaze moved over her slowly, now able to relax and get a good look at the girl heâd  met in the street. She was shorter than him (not surprising considering he was âtaller than his fatherâ (that being one of the few things his mother had told him about the man)). Her hair was the color of wheat, waving in the very minimal breeze just as heâd seen the never ending fields do on his road trip with his mother. She was small. She didnât look fragile, quite the opposite in fact. Maybe it was all of this time running from the infected. He didnât know, but he was fascinated by her.Â
Maybe Jaxon spent more time looking at her than he intended. He ended up clearing his throat and blinking away his curiosity and other feelings.Â
