Actually like - you know how Athena and Ares are both associated with war, but Athena is (at least ime) portrayed as the goddess of captains and generals, strategy and tactics as intellectual, perfectable crafts, warfare as the architecture of victory?

The goddess who views warfare as a fascinating exercise in abstract problem-solving, a chance for strategists to display their genius or cunning, whose followers are always seeking the opportunity to offer up another Cannae as sacrifice to her? To whom war is figures being moved across maps in generals tents, and the fact that actual people suffer and die in it is just irrelevant?

Very underrated, like, fantasy-villain patron archtype, imo.

In Homer, they are curses made flesh, released upon those who commit a crime or threaten the natural order. Seneca the Younger calls them 'they who with awful brows investigate men’s crimes and sift out ancient wrongs.’ In Ovid, they are the chthonic guards of souls judged too wicked for paradise. They are fearsome-looking creatures, unsmiling, uncrying (except, Ovid tells us, when Orpheus plays). They bristle with snakes—in their hair, wreathing their limbs, fastening their garments, held in their hands like whips. They dress in black or blood-red. Sometimes they breathe poison. This grotesque image might seem to be at odds with a righteous heart. But for anyone who might not be blameless, anger with reason and purpose and a will of iron is even more frightening than tumultuous, flailing rage.

headcanon that percy stays ready to clock the minotaur. this man would pause his lunch break to give this bull it's horn a third time. this man would dehydrate for two days if it meant he could murk this bull at the end of it. this man's beef with this walking beef is so grandeur. it was the first monster he killed the moment the battle of mamhattan began. this is one of percy's consistent bloodlust moments and no one will ever fault him for it.
