Summary:
Sociology professor Rumi had caught glimpses of her in the Social Sciences building over the past few months. She built up the image of the young doctoral student in her mind. One night before Finals Week she tapped on the door of Zoey's study room. One thing leads to another and she ends up spread out on a table in her office in front of a woman more than twenty years her junior, and in their short time together, they help each other learn to love themselves a little more.
or, Professor Rumi and PhD student Zoey find romance in the most studious of spaces.
Chapter 4 is up! After a whirlwind week of romance, Rumi and Zoey spend Winter Break apart.
Currently watching: nothing currently but I just caught up with Bridgerton! (season 4 has got to be my favorite so far!)
Currently reading: I finish books so quickly that I don’t have one I’m currently reading but I guess I can share a few of the fics I’m subscribed to!

Summary:
Two years ago twenty-two year old Rumi was finishing up college and on the path to medical school when a pregnancy test comes back positive a month and a half before graduation. Her boyfriend at the time, Jinu, ghosts her after she gives him the news and she doesn't know what to do. Her mother, Miyeong, and Aunties Celine and Suzie pitch in and help Rumi through her pregnancy, bringing a beautiful baby girl, Ha-eun, into the world in the wee hours of the New Year.
Today Rumi works at a café to make ends meet and provide for her eighteen-month-old daughter, still lovingly aided by her mom and aunties. Things change, though, when a pair of customers become regulars and make their interest in the young barista and mom not so subtle. As their courtship of Rumi ensues, she learns a lot about herself as they challenge her convictions about her path in life, which seemed rigid since she first saw those two pink lines.

Yeah, so I'm gonna level with y'all, I won't have the It Takes a Village chapter out on Thursday, because in my infinite wisdom i thought I could nurse my burnout for that fic by tending to my others, but now I'm burnt out on all three! Also eczema makes it hurt to type, so there's that.
I don't have a snippet of It Takes a Village to placate y'all, but I do have one of Striking a Chord and Burning the Midnight Oil. Also, since I don't know how else I'd write this all out, I've decided to include at the end of this post a list of Zoey's siblings in It Takes a Village with basic info and a little blurb for each.
Striking a Chord Snippet
When they got to the bar, Celine picked out two seats in a sea of empty ones and she and Medusa sat facing each other.
"Sprite, please," Celine requested from the bartender.
"Club soda for me," Medusa added.
Celine quirked her eyebrow and asked, "Are you sure? I'm buying, so you get whatever you want."
Medusa looked her intently in the eyes and replied, "I know. I want a club soda. I've no need for alcohol to have a good time with you." Celine tried to keep her expression unreadable as she parsed the double entendre of Medusa's words. The other woman didn't let Celine linger on them, though, and added, "This way I'll feel safer about things. I hope you understand."
"Yeah, of course," Celine replied distantly.
They thanked the bartender when their drinks came, and after a sip Medusa asked, "So, anything interesting going on with you lately?"
Celine shook her head and replied, "Paperwork. Mountains of it, like usual."
Medusa hummed and nodded. "You would think there would be more excitement in the life of a Death Scythe."
"There is, for everyone except the Reaper's Aide. If I get called into action, something's very wrong," Celine agreed. "What about you?"
"More of the same. Kid comes in with a cold, headache, sprained ankle. Nothing that really puts my expertise to use."
Celine took a sip of her drink. "You knew what you were signing up for," she shot back, a twinge of humor in her voice.
"Yes, I know," Medusa sighed. "I look back too fondly on the days in the field."
"You were one hell of a combat medic," Celine complimented. "How's your back?"
Medusa nodded. "It's good for the most part, but if I run or hunch over then it aggravates the injury."
Celine knitted her brows and asked, alluding to the fact their barstools were backless, "Would you rather we sit at a table or a booth?"
Medusa leaned to the side and looked past her. When something caught her eye, she replied, "No, thank you."
Celine turned around and followed Medusa's line of sight and noticed a barstool with a back that sat empty towards the end. Before Medusa could object, Celine stood up and walked to the end, bringing back the stool.
Medusa smiled as Celine exchanged the seats and stated, "My, aren't you sweet?"
Celine sat back down in her seat and waved it off. "It's my duty to care for all of the professors, staff and students at the academy."
Medusa rolled her eyes with a knowing smile and replied, "If I have to call you Celine off the clock, you have to stop carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Of course, I would rather you not do so on the clock, either." Medusa took a long drink, then added quietly, "Maybe I should call you Atlas."
"Celine is fine," she insisted, though there was no edge to her voice.
Burning the Midnight Oil Snippet
When they got to the airport Rumi popped her trunk, then took her key out of the ignition. "You're getting out?" Zoey asked in disbelief.
"Yeah, I'm getting out," Rumi replied as if there was no other option. Zoey smiled and pulled her suitcase out of the trunk, and as they stood there on the curb with families parting ways and parents entering the airport with their kids, Rumi wrapped Zoey in a big hug. Zoey rested her head on Rumi's shoulder for the duration, and when they broke the embrace, Rumi cupped Zoey's face in her hands and dragged her into a slow, passionate kiss; without tongue, of course.
Zoey pulled away once she realized what was happening and asked warily, "Rumi? There's people around!"
Rumi only smiled and replied, "No one we know. Let them know we're not mother and daughter," and pulled Zoey back into a kiss which took her breath away. They looked around afterwards and noticed a number of other airport-goers were giving them looks, but Rumi just grinned and said, "They're just jealous. I'm the luckiest woman on the platform."
Zoey huffed out an amused breath and countered, "I thought that title went to me."
"Tie?" Rumi suggested. Zoey nodded and Rumi pressed a kiss to her cheek. "Have a good flight."
"Drive safe, Rumi. You're my ride when I come back," Zoey replied and she waited on the curb as Rumi got back into her car, waved, and drove away.
Zoey's Siblings in It Takes a Village
Because Zoey's eomma is Korean, it was important to them that every child had a name that could be transcribed into Hangul, although that ruled out all names with f's unfortunately. Also these bio's aren't thought out too much, just a little blurb for each.
Zoey / 조이 (F, 24) obviously
Dani / 다니 (X, genderfluid, 23)
They and Zoey got into a lot of mischief as kids
On their big ranch house, when they were quite young, they were able to have their own rooms, but Dani and Zoey chose to share a room
Zoey was the first person Dani came out to and vice versa, they've always been super close even if they can only text and call these days
3. Minjae / 민재 (M, 22)
Super duper smart, but a snitch.
4. Sol / 술 (F, 20)
Very sweet and shy, very good cook. Fraternal twin of Luis
5. Luis / 루이스 (M, 20)
Rambunctious, can't cook to save his life, quite smart but doesn't like to show it off. Fraternal twin of Sol
6. Luna / 루나 (F, 18)
Also very sweet, pretty much the first child that was parented by Zoey and Dani from birth because of how full the house was. Because of this grew up kind of screwed up (she was raised by six year olds). Anti-social, not just shy.
7. Angel / 안헬 (M, 16)
Musician, wicked creative, inseparable from his fraternal twin, Junseo
8. Junseo / 준서 (M, 16)
Artist, also creative, inseparable from his fraternal twin, Angel
9. Hana / 하나 (F, 15)
The therapist of the family even though she never chose the role. She came at just the right time for their parents to complain to her (although not often and it wasn't nasty) and Zoey and Dani unwittingly dumped a lot of frustrations on her because of her emotional intelligence. Unfortunately Zoey doesn't yet know how much she and Dani screwed her up
10. Matilda / 마틸다 (F, 12)
Zoey and Dani hit their stride raising Matilda and Jiwoo. Matilda grew up feeling loved and confident, but harbors guilt for taking the spotlight from her other siblings. Fraternal twin of Jiwoo
11. Jiwoo / 지유 (F, 12)
Zoey and Dani hit their stride raising Matilda and Jiwoo. Jiwoo grew up feeling loved and confident, but she fully embraces that love, understands that it wasn't her fault she received it over others. Fraternal twin to Matilda.
12. Alondra / 아룬드라 (F, 11)
Alondra sort of suffers form middle child syndrome because her two older sisters got a lot of love from Zoey and Dani and they were unable to pivot it towards Alondra too. She's very sporty because the structure helped raise her more than her family.
13. Julio / 후료 (M, 9)
Received only intermittent care because Zoey and Dani were in high school and busy. Has anger issues but they had yet to show until Zoey and Dani moved out
14. Youngmi / 영미 (F, 6)
Last child and the one that their parents planned the most, so she has been babied and raised by her actual parents, not older siblings. Actually might be the healthiest mentally and emotionally out of all of them in the end.
Celine gasped into her seltzer and choked. Miyeong laughed, loud and delighted at Celine’s shock.
“Baby, you know your Appa. You have pictures of him on your wall, by your bed.”
Rumi blushed, five years old but all too aware that her mother was laughing at her expense. “You said a baby could have two Appas or Eommas or-”
“Yes, you’re right, some babies have two Appas.” Miyeong glanced at Celine, who’d just gotten herself composed and found herself blushing under Miyeong’s playful stare.
“Can’t I have two?”
“Why do you think Cece is your Appa, baby?”
“At school we’re reading a book and the Appa fixes everything around the house and, and, drops the baby off at school and tucks them into bed. And he cooks for the Eomma and makes the Eomma smile a lot. All the time. That’s what Appas do. And you always smile with Cece, Eomma. Always even when she isn’t looking.”
It was Miyeong’s turn to blush, now, and Celine would have reveled in it had her stomach not been doing summersaults at being clocked so easily by the five year old she co-parented with her best friend.
“I. Yeah.” Miyeong sounded distracted. “Good point, baby.”
Celine opened her mouth but found she didn’t know what to say. She cleared her throat.
“Rumi…” She started. “I’m just-”
“Do you want Celine to be your Appa, Rumi?” Miyeong asked, eyes boring into Celine’s now. Again, her stomach seemed to backflip.
“Yeah.”
Celine’s eyes burned. Miyeong tilted her head, a subtle question. Celine nodded. Yes, of course yes – she loved this child as her own flesh and blood. She’d do anything and everything for her. Of course Rumi could call her her Appa, could call her anything.
“Then Celine can be your Appa.” Miyeong said softly. Celine took a shaky breath in. “Celine loves you very much. And she’ll always be here to take care of you. Right?”
“Of course.” Celine whispered.
“So you can call Cece Appa if you want, or you can keep calling her Cece and know in your heart that she’s your Appa and when you need her she’ll be right by your side.”
Rumi nodded with finality. “I knew it.” She said, very seriously. “I always thought you were my Appa too, Cece.”
Celine quickly wiped her eyes, lest Rumi see her Appa cry. “Thank you, baby.” She whispered, striding around the dinner table to lift the kid into her arms and kiss her little cheeks a million times. Rumi giggled. When Celine glanced up, she found Miyeong watching them with such fondness in her eyes she felt weak once more.
(Zoey's grandpa) Pawpa: Allons ma chers! We're goin noodlin, ya Abuelita's been envie-ing some of my blacken catfish. (he only has some large rolling coolers)
Mira: I understood half of that.
Zoey: We're going fishing!
Rumi: (confused) Why doesn't he have fishing poles?
Zoey: (equally confused) because we're getting catfish?
Mira: So do we use nets or something?
Zoey: Why would we use nets?
Rumi: To grab the fish? What else would we use?
Zoey: (lifts hand waving it)
Rumira: ???
_later at the creek_
Pawpa: (sets coolers down next to the bank) ya a big em round here, Zeezee work ya magic.
Zoey: (rolls up her sleeve before sticking her whole arm into the murky water, Rumira watches in absolute facisnation and terror as they see her lurch forward slightly before yanking up a giant catfish who's mouth is still on her arm)
Pawpa: (whistles) That's my ma lapin! (helps her throw it into the cooler)
Mira: (stares at them then at Rumi) I have an idea
Rumi: Why are you looking at me? Mira?
Zoey: (looks at Mira who makes her fingers look like cat claws) Holy shit! Rumi!!! You are perfect for this!!
Rumi: I really think I'm not
Mira: What? Scared of a little fish? (teasing) afraid to break a nail?
Zoey: (making chicken noises)
Rumi: (immediately irritated with her claws coming out) I don't see you sticking your hand in the- (stares at her clawed fingers) oh. OH. wait did you two piss me off on purpose so my claws would come out?!
Zoemira: maybe~
Rumi: I can do this without getting mad ya know!!!
Mira: (seeing Rumi's patterns light up and muscles flex under her shirt) yeah we know but this is more fun.
Zoey: Now go catch us some fish, tiger~
-----back at the house----
Abuelita: Amor, you're back home soon?
Pawpa: Oh I'm gettin the wagon, and ya gonna need to make space in the deep freeze.
Abuelita: Why?
Pawpa: (trying to think of how to explain that one of Zoey's girlfriends got irritated then grew claws and somehow pulled up a fifty pound catfish her first go) Cher, ya wouldn't believe me if I tried.
Not a super deep post, just caught myself agonizing over only writing *checks notes* 4,500 words tonight. And it's good shit, not like the drivel I used to bang out. This is supposed to be fun. I do this for free. And I feel I'm not the only one.
For sure this is not blaming readers, it is wholly self-pressure. Time to go to bed early, then, and remind myself to ease up on me, she's prone to taking it all to heart.
My heart goes to all the writers who feel this too. Take a few days off if you feel so inclined.

Summary:
"And what did you do after that?" Zoey asked, clutching Mira's arm gently.
Mira looked into her eyes and shook her head. "I starved myself," she stated. "It was another four months before I could bring myself to kill again, and that is when I made the rule to only feed off criminals."
or, Mira recounts the story that changed everything in her life as a vampire. Rumi and Zoey listen.
My first one shot connected to Countess Mira! The fic takes place after the end of Countess Mira, but her story takes places much earlier.
Here! Take a snippet of Chapter 18 of It Takes a Village:
Mira opened her eyes to a smiley face staring back at her. As soon as she recognized that blur of a face, two hands came up and began squishing her face this way and that, and she closed her eyes, her heart fluttering at the sound of Ha-eun giggling.
She opened her mouth to say, "Good morning Ha-eun," but it was a mistake, because she only got to "Goo—" before a little hand was shoved into her mouth. She pulled away and spat the hand out, then repeated the greeting wearily. She should have seen that coming.
"Mira!" Ha-eun exclaimed in between giggles.

This is a Sussie appreciation post because my guy (spirit bird with no gender) does not get the recognition they deserve.
People love Derpy– valid– but Sussie has such an attitude to them and I just can't let it go unnoticed.
Sussie is dramatic and most definitely a little shit, but they also care (and have more braincells than the tiger). I honestly think Sussie acts as an older sibling to Derpy in the sense that they keep Derpy alive because "Dad would be upset if this child dies"
