Do you have any tips on how to grow while maintaining a healthy diet? What do you eat to stay big and grow? I have a friend who is also a gainer (500+lbs) but he got diagnosed with diabetes and a fatty liver. He is option is to change up his diet to help lose weight. I want to recommend something similar to your diet so he can gain weight but also become healthier
You asked, I hope you read it!
Diabetes and a fatty liver together are not uncommon and a typical result of gaining. The causes that usually lead to fatty liver disease include poor nutrition, lack of exercise and obesity, heavy alcohol consumption or existing diabetes. Conversely, fatty liver disease leads to insulin resistance in many gainers or feedees because the more pronounced the fatty liver, the worse the insulin effect on the cells. This increases the risk of diabetes. To gain weight in form of fat one must consume more calories than needed. It is important to understand that we convert the food we consume into energy. During this complex process, calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function. If consumption and use of that energy is in balance, then the energy is used to operate your muscles your brain etc. If you do not use up that energy, then the body stores the energy in different reservoirs for short-, medium-, or long-term use. The body converts calories from carbohydrates, fats, or proteins in glucose (sugar). The short-term reservoir is our blood. That is why glucose levels raise in our blood and is used for muscles, cell reproduction, brain functions. If there is more glucose in the blood than used, it gets metabolized in the liver and stored in the liver for medium term use. If we keep overeating carbs then the short- and medium-term storage reservoir is too full, and the liver starts to convert the glucose into Triglycerides and stores it in our fat cells. When we overeat to fatten up, the above happens but we do not only eat carbs, but we also eat lots of fat as well. When the liver has to absorb more fats than it can break down or store, additional fat is deposited in the liver tissue. This is the beginning of the fatty live. This information is depressing from a feedee or gainer point of view. Every doctor will tell you that you must lose weight to get out of this. You must change your lifestyle and you can’t go on with fattening yourself.
Ok, what can we feedees and gainers do about that? Do I want to lose all the blubber I voluntarily acquired to prevent an early grave? It is important to understand that being a 500 lbs mountain of lard is not healthy to begin with.
The good in the bad is that diabetes is manageable quite comfortably with meds and insulin it can be kept in check. My long-term glucose is in the range of a healthy individual, to do that I monitor it with a glucose sensor I can always read out during the day with my smartphone. I inject (a lot of) insulin to keep the glucose curve flat. By now I learned when to inject and how much I must inject depending on the amount of food I consume. If I want to keep gaining, I just inject more insulin and my body happily keeps storing the excess energy I took in. What about my liver? Since the liver has no nerve cells, people with fatty liver or fatty liver inflammation usually do not feel any pain signals. However I can still judge if my liver suffers of fatty liver disease. Things what could be a signal of a fatty liver is persistent tiredness and listlessness, difficulty concentrating, sense of pressure in the right upper abdomen, frequent bloating, discomfort when lying on the right side and dark urine. Why do we have a liver in the first place? The liver not only converts nutrients into usable substances for the body, it also breaks down harmful substances and detoxifies the body. If it is injured or damaged, it can even regenerate itself and grow back again. However, if it can no longer keep up with the utilization of fatty acids, it stores the excess fat and deposits it in the liver tissue. In this way, fatty liver develops over time. There is also good news about the liver, a non-alcoholic fatty liver can also heal itself. If there is no cirrhosis, the organ can fully recover. Now do not get disappointed, the most effective method is to lose weight, because this is the only way how to lose weight in the liver. Your friend should lose three to five percent of his weight (at 500 lbs. that is only 15 – 25 lbs.) so that the fat stored in his liver also disappears. Dieting from time to time is not bad at all. The good thing about losing 20 lbs. is that his body slows his metabolism down and if he goes back to eating “normal” and if he keeps the gain at a moderate pace then he will gain the weight back without developing a fatty liver immediately again. I would say that if he loses 20 lbs. to fix his liver and then keep his glucose levels in check with insulin then he can still go on gaining, maybe at a slower pace but he will not have to completely change is lifestyle if he does not want to. I want to express that this is my opinion. I am no expert in healthy living and no doctor. My opinion is based on my own experience with diabetes and gaining. My opinion about what health is, may be different to his or yours. I am fully aware that my lifestyle and view on health may shorten my life but I must say that I am not afraid of death because as long as I live death is not on my mind.
