An Awkward Proposal
@peter-donnelly
The only thing Cece was looking forward to about her upcoming trip was the destination itself. Hawaii was gorgeous. She had been a handful of times with her family, but all of those visits were before law school. She was overdue. Unfortunately, the reason would likely make the company unbearable– unless she was excited to have her parents nagging in her ear constantly about settling down and ‘finding the right one.’ Her sister was always bringing her newest flame around the family, but Cece had fully kept focused on her career. Something that seemed important even to her parents; at least until recent years. She was going to show up solo to her cousin’s destination wedding and never live it down. The berating and annoying attempts at setting her up with their successful friends’ sons that attended made her skin crawl just thinking about it. At least it was an excuse to buy some new sundresses and beachwear. If nothing else; she’d come back with a nice tan.
The two giant shopping bags at her sides were beginning to weigh Cece’s arms down. She tried to walk briskly back to her firm’s building for respite, regardless of the fact that she still had plenty of her lunch break left. She veered around a corner sidewalk and careened right into Peter. Sigh. Cece had been trying to avoid him ever since that damn New Year’s Eve party because she didn’t like the jealousy that seeing him with someone else had inflicted. It meant there was something real bubbling up, and she didn’t want to deal with that. She couldn’t. They were merely friends. At the most. Former enemies. Hazel eyes gazed up into his as she let out a huff of laughter. “Sorry, Mr. Donnelly. Guess I should slow down in these heels.” Please don’t say anything about our awkward avoidance, please… She begged mentally as she tried not to focus on how much she’d missed his handsome face around.
.
The odds of bumping into someone you knew in the middle of New York City were preposterously low, and yet here Peter was, colliding with maybe the one person he’d least expected to be in the presence of right now, Cece. For a while they’d actually spent a fair amount of time together, either by chance or on purpose, but since the start of the year it felt like that time was getting less and less and he wasn’t entirely sure why. But he also could tell that perhaps it was at least somewhat on purpose, unless part of Cece’s New Year’s resolution was to completely change up parts of her schedule and suddenly change her daily routines. He had no problems admitting to himself that it bothered him, but he hadn’t reached out to her partly to give her a little space if it was indeed what she wanted. His schedule had also gotten pretty busy again with work, but Peter’s mind had drifted back to wondering perhaps if he’d done something to put her off after they’d begun to grow a friendship at least. They’d been rivals prior in the courtroom, but after learning more about one another had seemingly gotten closer.
Especially to both of their surprise when they discovered that he was the superintendent in the apartment building she lived in, and one waterlogged afternoon in particular. Hazel met his eyes and her features softened at least slightly as she let out a laugh, causing him to do the same. “Oh that’s okay Miss Bateman, I suppose I should just be happy we ran into one another at all. Literally.” Glancing at her and trying not to be so obvious in taking in her beauty, his eyes moved down at the shopping bags at her sides, and immediately reached to help her with them. “Here, the least I can do is help you out with these. Are you headed back to your office right away, or do you have a few minutes for a break?” Silently he hoped she’d at least give him those few minutes, perhaps he could figure out why there’d been so much distance put between them.

Cece: I am /very/ confident about it, thank you very much. You're welcome to try, but my lips are sealed. Hah! I'm glad that you are. Do you need anything? Soup?
Cece: Ah, it's alright, really. I'm not sure if I should be happy about that, or afraid. ;)
Peter: You're very welcome, maybe it means I just have to work that much harder. Oh are they? How sealed? Thank you, and I wouldn't say I really need anything, but I'd be a fool to turn down an offer of soup when you're offering.
Peter: Maybe a little of both? ;)
Text 📱 Peter Donnelly
Cece: They sure did. There's a leak. Good luck! You aren't getting that out of me. Oh, good. I'd be a little spooked if you were typing this beyond the grave. But, really. How are you feeling?
Cece: Things are fine, thank you. A little boring, honestly. Mostly because you haven't been around to make fun of.
Peter: Well this won't do at all. Thank you, but you seem pretty confident about that. I'm good, but I don't think even I'm that good. Feeling better every day, thank you. For real.
Peter: And good, I'm glad they are but oh, I'm sorry about that. Rest assured, I'll be back soon to liven things up.

Cece: Hey. Heard it through the grapevine that you've been under the weather. Thought I would check and make sure you're still alive.
Peter: Hey you. You mean somebody revealed my secret? Now I have to know who to fire. Kidding, but thank you for reaching out. Still alive so far. ;)
Peter: And how are things in your world?
cecebateman:
“It only counts as entrapment if I had known you were the one that was going to come fix it. Or, make it worse.” She couldn’t help but beam at the joke, even if in the end, Peter had indeed followed through with his job. While banter had always been present in their dialogue with one another, she appreciated that it now took on a more playful nature. Not quite as competitive as in the past; or at least, not hostile competitiveness. It was still surreal to consider that they were spending time together outside of work, and voluntarily– though she was far from complaining. The scent of Peter’s cologne wafted under her nose at his closeness as they entered arm in arm, stirring butterflies.
A feigned gasp parted Cece’s lips as she pretended to be offended at his so-called line. “And here I thought I was unique in having such contrasting passions. I should have known though; after all, you are Peter Charming Donnelly. I guess it’s a good thing that I haven’t fallen for your whims like all of the others.” That was complete and utter bullshit, but Cecelia just grinned again smoothly. She had to remember that even if they were kind of friends now, they were also good at playing games when it came to one another. She wasn’t sure how much stock to put into their outings yet.
Happy that Peter liked the idea of starting with a fresh exhibit, Cece reached for one of the guidebooks at the entrance to keep for the tour. “Perfect!” Her expression softened as she let his remark sink in; she could tell that Peter wholeheartedly meant that he wanted to her have a good time. Funnily, she already was. So long as their iciness didn’t slip back while there. “Thank you. I want you to as well though,” she admitted, a gentleness in her response. “And I really don’t mind being a tour guide. It gives me a chance to show off.” With a little wink, she began dragging him toward the new exhibit. Cecelia stopped at the first painting on display, humming in thought. “What do you think of this one?”
Escorting Cece in through the front doors of the museum made Peter feel like he was walking on air right now. Their truce-turned-friendship was growing more genuine by the day, and it was nice that they could enjoy an outing together like this sharing in a love for art. He chuckled as she pretended to take offense to his summation of the kitchen incident being entrapment, and indeed she raised a good point in defense of herself. “Perhaps, or maybe you did know and are just that good at hiding it,” he quipped back, smiling wider than ever. “Well, if it helps then I think you’re the most intelligent, most artistic, of all the lawyer types I’ve run my con on?” He felt confident enough that she realized everything he just said was a lie, that she was completely and totally unique and someone who stood out in every way to Peter both in professional and personal life.
Both were willing to go along with what the other one wanted, and at her excited tone for checking out something new they’d both seen, he expressed sentiment that he wanted her to enjoy today as well. Her acceptance and thanking of him drew yet another grin from Peter, he couldn’t seem to stop smiling now. “Oh I promise, I am,” he assured her and then as Cece took his hand to drag him towards the new exhibit he couldn’t help but love the way she happily let it be known she appreciated the chance to show off too. They did indeed have a lot in common. And then as she gave him a wink, Peter slowly inhaled. It was very tough to resist.
Bringing him to a stop in front of the first painting, Peter stood beside Cecelia and took it in. Moments later she asked what he thought, and though he was actually looking at the painting his words could just has easily have been about the company with him. “Breathtaking, I’d say.”
