The Man Who Would Be King - Good Old Fashioned Adventure Yarn
Ran across this one on a television rebroadcast sometime in the early 80s. A fun old fashioned swashbucking adventure story based on a Rudyard Kipling tale and starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine as a pair of cockney mid level soldiers in the british army who decide to head off into the wilds of Afganistan and beyond into the fictional country of Kafiristan to make their fortune. Their plan?: Use their advanced weaponry and military tactical training to help one of the warlords conquer his neighbors and then loot the country ‘five ways from sunday’. Unfortunately a twist of fate raises one of the two men into 'Godlike Status’ and the plan takes an interesting and ironic twist.
Directed with a great deal of love for the material by John Huston, and the whole production seems to have both a touch of class that is missing from many modern films, and a genuine sense that the stars were having a lot of fun doing the picture. Christopher Plummer has a small role as Kipling himself, and the movie is an enjoyable adventure tale of the type you rarely see anymore.
