Adventures in Babysitting
a/n: last night’s movie was The VVitch, which is on netflix, but definitely not for the faint of heart. it was fuckin wild, start to finish. also, I didn’t know how to end this so I just sorta. did my best. peter would not be so proud of me
Your adventures in babysitting are never dull, especially in place of the Watson family.
Now Mary Jane’s mother says Mary Jane is much too young to babysit her baby sister. Mary Jane is a elementary school aged red head girl with a burning passion for Spider-Man. You’ve seen her room, walls spattered in Spider-Man posters. You once caught the young girl freezing on the streets mid winter trying to feign a sprained ankle and catch Spider-Man’s attention. You ushered her home, wrapping your own coat round Mary Jane’s shoulders.
“Spider-Man wouldn’t want you to go through such lengths,” you chastised. “Besides, don’t you think he’s…awfully older than you?”
Mary Jane looked upon you with wide, hopeful eyes. “Yes! Imagine it, all the girls in my grade will be so jealous!”
You shook your head. “No, no! Older men should have nothing to do with young girls like you, at least not in the way you are hoping for.”
Mary Jane Watson sighed. “The other girls are mean. If Spider-Man were in love with me…”
You could not stop the young girl’s tearful one-sided love for Spider-Man, who, ironically, is your boyfriend. You’ve been dating Peter for five years, since your freshmen year in high school, and Spider-Man for two, since your senior year. You understand why he waited so long to tell you. After all, look what happened to Liz Allan-Toomes’ father. Having the more dangerous knowledge of New York City’s underground, or perhaps higher ground, world can put a target on your back.
Mary Jane Watson one day, rather soon following her confession on the street beyond her complex, had an awful realization that she was in love with one Harry Osborne, a popular boy in her class.
“Oh?” you said, bouncing small Lisa on your knee. “Yes!” Mary Jane exclaimed happily, throwing her school bag down and happily prancing about the room. “Harry isn’t better than Spider-Man, of course, but he will tide me over until I can be with Spider-Man.”
You raised an eyebrow. “’Tide you over,’” you repeated. “So, Harry likes you back then.”
“Of course,” Mary Jane said. She took a seat down by you on the couch. “Where are mom and dad today?”
“Out for their anniversary,” you told her. “They’ve been together for a long time, a bit longer than your lifetime.” Mary Jane looked up to you with curious eyes. She is a precious looking girl, you realize at that moment—immature, not uncommon for her age, but definitely wise, in a very odd sort of way. She seems to know more than most eight year olds know.
“So, they’re in love, right? A lot of my friends have parents who are not in love.”
“Of course,” you told her, using the same tone she confidently used before.
Mary Jane lifted a thin, red brow. “Are you in love?” she asked. You laughed as the thought of Peter instantly rolled into your mind. “Well, yes,” you said. “I actually am.”
“With who?!” Mary Jane exclaimed. “I want to know what love is like,” she told you, “so you must tell me every riveting detail of this relationship.”
You answered her every question;
What’s his name?
Peter.
How old is he?
22, like me.
Is he cute?!
Very.
“When do I get to meet him?!” Mary Jane exclaimed. She jumped to her feet. “Invite him over, now!”
You held Lisa close to her chest, as she had begun to fall asleep. “Mary Jane, I can’t.”
“Well, why not?”
“Because you’re mother and father didn’t say that I could.”
Mary Jane looked absolutely unimpressed with your such answer. “Momma and dad aren’t even home,” she said. “When will they be back? Late tonight, yeah? Invite him over!”
“Mary…” you said warningly.
She began to chant and dance around. “Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter!”
You sighed, shielding the baby’s ears, and nodded. “Yes, yes, alright. I’ll call him once I put your sister to bed.”
“She’s sleeping!” Mary Jane said loudly, in the form of a whisper. “She can be put to bed now!”
You sighed and carefully stood, going to put the small baby in her crib. You gazed at her sleeping, chubby form for a moment, smiling to yourself, then pulled out your phone from your pocket.
“Hello, my love, my darling, the light of my life!” Peter richly answered your phone call.
You laughed, sure to be quiet so the baby could rest. You moved out of the room to the hall. “What? That’s not a usual greeting.”
“Well, it should be,” Peter said firmly. “What have you done?” you asked.
”I haven’t done a thing. I just wanted you to know how much I love you, just in case you didn’t get the memo last night.”
You giggled. “Hush! I’m babysitting, you can’t say things like that.”
Peter sighed on the other end. You could practically hear him pouting.
“But I miss you!” he whined.
“That’s actually part of why I have called you for. Could you come over? Possibly with food? I’m sorry to ask this, you could be ‘working.’”
“Nah, I’m not. Taking a break for today. Possibly tomorrow. Of course I can come over! What kind of food do you want? Just text me, and with the address too.”
Peter’s sweetness overwhelmed you with feelings of love and admiration. The call ends, you text Peter, but after asking Mary Jane what she would like for supper.
The baby would wake up in a few hours time and stay awake for a bit longer before going to sleep for the night. You could leave the nursery with the door cracked open.
“Peter’s coming?!” Mary Jane exclaimed. “Yes! Yes! I’m going to show him everything I have.”
Oh. Well, alright then. Mary Jane sprinted off to her bedroom, loudly collecting every toy she wanted Peter—who she doesn’t even know yet—to see.
Peter arrived some time later, carrying bags and boxes of the finest Italian pizza and cheese fries Queens could offer.
Your favorite sight is Peter holding food that you’ll be able to devour before you devour him-or he devours you. Either is fine, honestly.
“Is this Peter?!” Mary Jane exclaimed in a loud whisper.
Peter laughed as he you and he began to set out the food on a table. “Nice to meet you, Mary Jane.”
She blushed as brightly as her hair. “You’re so cute. Did you know that I am in love with two boys? I think I am in love with three now.”
Peter couldn’t hold back his laugh. “Really? Who are these three lucky guys?”
Mary Jane counted aloud, using her fingers, “Spider-Man, Harry Osborne, and you. Except Y/n is also in love with you. And I quite love Y/n…so I won’t be in love with you.”
You nodded. “A sound choice. Go wash up.”
Mary Jane sprinted away, her blur of red hair following her like a comet’s tail.
“She’s certainly something,” Peter said, looking and sounding amused. You laughed. “That’s true. She’s hyper as fuck. Also, she’s in super love with Spider-Man.”
Peter laughed again. “Seriously?”
“Yep; you’ve got a lot of girls lining up. Face it, Tiger Lily, you’ve pretty much hit the jackpot with the whole radioactive spider thing.”
“See, the radioactive bit is all just a theory,” Peter reminded you. “I don’t actually know where the spider came from. Plus I couldn’t exactly run tests.”
You considered that for a moment. “You know the general area where the spider came from. It happened sometime during that science field trip first year at Midtown.”
Mary Jane quickly bounded back into the kitchen, shaking her hands dry as she bounced on her heels. “I’m not hungry yet,” she said. “Can we watch TV?”
You looked at Peter, who simply shrugged at you. “You’re in charge here.”
Thus, you two watched TV. Mary Jane did majority of the talking, being an 8 year old girl, after all. “And Miraculous Ladybug is my favorite TV show,” she was saying.
The screen became alight with a cartoon about some sort of superheroes in Paris. The main character is an awkward girl with magic powers whose superhero persona is Ladybug, who sports a tight red suit.
You nudged Peter’s side with your elbow. “That’s you,” you whispered. Peter sent you a look of dismay. “Low blow,” he muttered. “That’s a low blow, even for you,” he said.
“Okay! I’m hungry now,” Mary Jane gleefully announced. She took it upon herself to shut off the television set and drag you, and Peter, off the couch. “Kitchen! Grease! Food!” she cheered triumphantly.
“My thoughts exactly, girlfriend,” you said with a laugh. Mary Jane thoroughly examined every piece of food before piling her plate sky high. You intervened, dividing her food portions in half, then again divided it in half.
Peter watched you fondly. He liked that you were so caring towards everybody, not just Mary Jane. As you sent Mary Jane on her way with her plate of food, Peter slid his arm around your waist. “You’re really good with kids,” he said.
You narrow your eyes. “Don’t go getting ideas. You haven’t even proposed to me yet.”
Peter raised his eyebrows. “You don’t trust me? I promised you I would marry you our junior year.”
Your heart sang as you recalled the memory. The class had been in Venice for a field trip, and of course, Spider-Man found trouble in a foreign country. You begged him not to go, pleaded for him to stay with you.
“I can’t sit idly by while danger walks the Earth. I can’t let another Thanos go free again.”
“Thanos, Vulture, now this Mysterio. There’s always going to be something dangerous.”
“And I’ll always be there to stop it,” Peter said confidently.
“Petey, I cannot lose you again. I’m not doing it. I refuse!”
Peter managed to laugh at your words. You became blinded with anger. “What is so funny?”
“Listen,” he said. “When you and I are married, you can tell me what to do. Just for now, please let me go.”
Your face became lit with shock. “Excuse me? This isn’t the time for teen drama excuses, okay, this isn’t Secret Life Of An American Teenager.”
Peter shook his head. “I’m being dead serious. We’re getting married one day. But today, I have to do this.”
His hands held your shoulders tightly. He wanted desperately wants you to be okay with this and support you. You held in a sigh. You’ve only just found out Peter’s secret.
“…Fine,” you said in a taut voice. “Come back in one piece, please. Otherwise we can’t get married.”
“I hope that wasn’t your idea of a real proposal,” you told Peter as you recalled the memory.
Peter wrinkled his nose. “Of course it’s not,” he assured you. “I know how to be romantic.” He leaned in for a kiss, but you blocked your mouth with a cheesy mess of fries. “Too slow. Eat up, Tiger Lily. You’re going to need your energy before you propose.”

“Wait, wait. Wait one minute.” Betty put her hands on her hips. “You didn’t ask him to come back?”
Ned dropped his face in his hands. “Fuuuuuck. Fuck, Y/n! Fuck!”
You shot Betty and Ned both a panicked glance. “Is that bad?”
Betty laughed sarcastically. “Is it bad? Hah! Of course, Y/n, of course it’s bad. Peter isn’t just a boy you like. He’s your soulmate.”
You stared at Betty with a profound, bolded silence. “Oh? He is? Well, Betts, I didn’t know that.”
She scrunched up her nose, looking like an angry little bunny. “I don’t appreciate your sarcasm right now, missy! Babe?” She cast her eyes upon Ned, now, who was scrolling through his phone, Betty’s, and your all at once.
He looked at her solemnly, shaking his head. “Peter’s gone off the grid. He’s not liking any posts on Instagram.”
Your heart sank into the pit of your guilt ridden stomach. “Peter hasn’t even called you?” you asked. Ned sighed. “No. Y/n, you’re lucky you’re my friend, otherwise I’d be really mad at you for hurting Peter’s feelings.”
You held your face in your hands, biting back the screams of frustration that burned at your throat. “I didn’t know what to say!”
Betty tossed her hands up in the air. “Are you kidding me? When your soulmate says that he’s in love with you, YOU SAY IT BACK!”
There was a vague “Elizabeth!” in the background. “Sorry, mom!” Betty shouted. “We’re being too loud, you guys.”
You stared at Betty with that bolded silence again. “You were the only one talking.”
“Don’t disrespect me in my own bedroom. Especially when I’m trying to figure out how to fix your relationship. Oh, gosh. What would Liz do?”
Ned shrugged. “Liz wouldn’t know what to do, because Liz is actually a nice person and would never have hurt her soulmate this way.”
You punched Ned as hard as you could on his shoulder. “Shut up about me being a mean person! I get it, I messed up! But you guys are my friends, too, so can you just help me instead of lecturing me about it?”
Betty sighed, regaining her composure and smoothing her hair. “We can fix this,” she assured you. “We can. Peter is just going to need some time…alone time. If he hasn’t called Ned then he’s probably moping around at home with his aunt.”
“Or he’s going to run away and become a serial killer.” You, Betty, and Ned turned to look at silent Michelle who was lounging in the corner on her phone. She shrugged. “What? This was a traumatic night for him. His inner serial killer may have been triggered.”
Even though Michelle was joking, you burst into a fit of sobs. Tears streamed down your cheeks. Your face muscles burned. Maybe a good cry would do you some good.
Betty sat by you and soothingly rubbed your upper back. Ned shot Michelle a look. “Nice going. You made the happy one of the group cry.”
Michelle sighed. “Not like you weren’t being an ass either. Now, Y/n, I’m sorry. Peter isn’t going to be a serial killer. He’ll probably get caught after his first victim because he isn’t that sneaky.”
Betty threw a pillow at Michelle. “You aren’t helping!”
Michelle apologized again, this time through a laugh. “I obviously don’t mean it. You guys, this is going to turn out fine. Peter can’t stay away from Y/n and Y/n can’t stay away from Peter. Everyone knows that if anyone is leaving the friend group, it’s Liz, because she lives far away now so it’s hard for her to keep up with the gossip.”
“MJ,” Betty whined, “no one is leaving the group! I don’t think this is cause for that…right?”
“According to every movie I’ve seen, this is the start of a beautiful relationship,” Ned told you, sweeping his hands in the air to mime the creation of a rainbow.
You wiped your eyes. “Guys, this isn’t a movie, or a fanfiction, or a shitty To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel. I really hurt Pete this time.”
Michelle remained quiet. “Okay, you’re right. So, do you have any plans yet?”
“Guys,” Ned interrupted, looking panicked and almost nauseous. He held up his phone. “Peter is calling me.”
Both girls, and you, silently screamed in harmony for a second, scrambling for a place to hear the phone call. “Answer it!” you hissed, ushering the phone to Ned’s ear.
Ned quickly answered, putting the call on speaker at Betty’s accord. “Hey dude, what’s up?” Ned asked, trying to sound cool.
“Hey,” Peter’s voice floated through the line. “Do you have a minute to talk?”
“Uhh…” He looked around, and Betty started to violently nod her head. “Of course. You’re on speaker with Betty. A-and MJ.”
“So Y/n’s not there?” Peter asked.
“No.”
You rolled your eyes to the ceiling. Ned isn’t very good under pressure.
“Do you know what happened, then?” Peter asked. His voice was flat with bitter amusement. “Yeah…” Ned replied. “Y/n feels really bad, you know. She was crying. Like, ugly crying.”
You threatened to punch Ned again, making his leg flinch. “B-but she feels bad, so that’s all that matters.”
Peter sighed, the sound crackling. “I guess so. I think I came on too strong. I told her I loved her. She just froze, like a deer in headlights.”
“I have a feeling she’s going to talk to you very soon,” Betty said, making eye contact with you for a minute. You hung your head down. You would have to talk to him soon. That is, if you didn’t want him to become a serial killer.
“If she says anything to you guys, could you…actually, never mind. Thanks Ned, thanks you guys. I’m going to head to sleep now.”
Everyone chimed in with a goodnight. Everyone except you. You let the word ring in your head, hoping he would just feel the message. You don’t know if the bond works that way. You hope it does, for a split second, so that this can all be solved without the sharing of any words at all. Perhaps God would let Peter know what was up, on the sly when no one was looking. Perhaps.
Ned shut off his phone. Your friends stared at you expectantly, waiting for you to say, or do, something.
“I should get going. I need some sleep too.”
There was a collective look of mild disappointment.
Ned turned anxious that his two friends would have a falling out over a bad soulmate reveal. Betty felt sad that she couldn’t really do anything to help you, aside from assuring you of her friendship. And Michelle felt awkwardly caught in the middle of it all, unsure of what to do at all.
“Do you want me to call you an Uber?” Betty asked. “I don’t want you to walk home alone so late.”
Michelle perked up. “Actually, I’m going to walk with Y/n. We live one neighborhood apart, so it will be okay.”
You felt grateful for Michelle’s offer. “Thanks. I’ll see you guys around.”
The streets of New York aren’t as wild as one might think. Well, at least not in these parts of the city. You live in the more calm areas of Queens, where the neighborhoods are connected and protected by neighborhood watch. Some neighbors have taken to installing cameras around the neighborhood. So, you feel pretty safe walking home with Michelle.
“How did it go with Mary Jane?” you asked.
Michelle shrugged. “It went alright. Her soulmate is turning things over. I’m sure it’ll be alright.”
You nodded. “That’s good. Mary Jane is…nice.” You don’t actually know the girl.
“Y/n, you can talk to me you know. If there’s anything you wanted to say in private, then I swear not to tell anyone.”
You almost tripped over the sidewalk. “Huh? Thank you, Michelle, but really, I—”
“I don’t have a soulmate, Y/n.”
You shut your mouth. “What?”
Michelle looked mildly relieved, as if she’d been waiting to say that for a long time. She held out her palm, as if waving to you. “See this?” She pointed to the heart mark on her smooth skin. “It’s fake. I was born without a mark. My parents got me a tattoo when I was four, right after my pediatrician came back with negative test results. I literally am alone in this world. Made for nobody. And I am not telling you this for the reason you may think,” she said in a thick voice, perhaps becoming overwhelmed with some emotion. “I am telling you this so you can put it into perspective. For tomorrow, or even just for tonight, even one hour, pretend that Peter isn’t your soulmate. His quirks, habits, notes, they don’t exist. Make your choice then.”
You couldn’t really summon the words that were owed. “Michelle…I had no clue,” you whispered.
She laughed wryly. “It’s okay. I don’t care anymore. I didn’t share my secret with you to guilt you into starting something with Peter, or make you feel bad for what you did. You are my friend, first and foremost. You are the reason I have other friends. I don’t want to see you hurt, or worse, hurting those you care for most because of something stupid like your own confusion.” She shoved her hands into her pockets. “Okay?”
You sighed. “Okay. MJ?”
“Hmm?”
“I…thanks. For everything.”
She simply grinned. “No problem.”

its “thighs rubbing together under ya sundress” season
Buy cute, cheap lace leggings. Cut them a little above your knee. Hem them or don’t, but then you can wear them under your sundresses and not worry about how you sit or if your thighs chafe, and if anyone sees them they look cute af so hell yes
Or a little deodorant between the thighs is magical
Also, LUSH sells this dust called Silky Underwear that makes your skin smooth so they don’t stick together or chafe.
I love that we’re all here for each other in this season of need
Monistat has an anti-chafing gel that works wonders and I live by. You can usually find it in the feminine care aisle of any drugstore.
There’s this stuff called Glide…pretty cheap & works hella miracles
I’m so ready for sundress season.
