After a moment, she put the ball of twine back onto its pillow. “Anyways. They tried to arrest the Phonics Wizard, but he had a plan in case something went wrong and he turned it into a plane and flew away.”

I wish more people got this because some ‘low-empathy’ people are the most compassionate and sympathetic in the universe, and I hate it when that’s taken to mean ‘unfeeling and probably hostile’ when nothing could be further from the truth

Posts like this make me feel so much better. It always seems like society treat responses to others pain as though empathy is the most important kind. I am around 85% compassionate and this post helped me not feel like I am a monster because of that for once.

the other day I read a compelling point that many instances described as illiteracy would actually be more aptly described as aliteracy, meaning an individual has the ability to read but simply chooses not to. great example here, awesome work.

just looked it up. holy fuck. they did it by de-duplicating assets. I'm just. my jaw is on the floor. supposedly duplicating assets helps load times on HDDs but. holy fuck at what cost

it's worse than that: The Helldivers devs were told that duplicating assets would help HDD load times, but then they actually tested it and it had basically zero effect on load times!

So they had more than sextupled the size of their game by following industry standard practice that actually did basically nothing!

Sure, I can turn off the hose I'm using to clean my workstation which is a job I need to do before I can go home (or get yelled at) to exchange your 5 dimes for 2 quarters after I explicitly said 'the bosses don't like me doing that' (because I get yelled at) despite you coming to this same place yesterday and knowing our machines only accept dollar bills or quarters. Sure I can (comply with safety) and make sure my hose is off and hooked up, it's totally not interrupting my ability to LEAVE and GO HOME at the end of the day. And sure you can make some snide ass comments about my attitude as you walk away with your 2 quarters after blowing half a cigarettes worth of smoke in my (asthmatic) face. Sure. Because fuck people who work cleaning jobs, I guess. I hope the goddamn deep bass thumping music you decide the whole neighborhood needs to hear emanating from our parking lot blows your speakers out and that it is VERY expensive to fix.

Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.

I also think that the present era has proven that authoritarian leaders don't actually want a population of wide-eyed idealists, they want a population of jaded assholes who are convinced that everyone is lying, any resistance is either a scam or doomed to failure, and nothing can ever get better.
