It was absolutely adorable seeing the neighbourhood children come by Marlinspike for Halloween.

The hall spent so long sealed up and unused that it gained the reputation of being a haunted house over the decades... What a place to pass by on Halloween night! They were so excited to see it open and lit up this year - not to mention with sweets at the door for the ones brave enough to come knocking. Their costumes were wonderful, too! I’m certain the real Halloween spirit comes from parents being so creative.

We also dressed up later for a party - an excuse to have everyone over and for the Captain to break out the alcohol, really - but we might do it earlier next year, when the children come by. We just didn’t want them to think the Captain’s Sir Francis Haddock costume was a real pirate ghost haunting Marlinspike...

It’s all about Father’s Day in the papers today. What a pleasant thing to read about, even without parents of his own. There are the usual reports of wars, tragedies and other unrest, of course, but the ratio of positive to negative is far more evened out.

“Ye’d lose yoor reputation wit'n th’ week,” Haddock joked as he picked the morning paper up from the coffee table. “Though I’ll admit ’s quite amusin’ t’ watch.”

Such an agile and hyperactive young man, never a misstep, yet like everyone else his foot rested on that treacherous step.

“Didn’ think I hit th’ step hard enough t’ fracture it,” he mused, pipe in mouth as he opened the paper.

“Oh, ha, ha.”

The sarcastic laugh was about as nasty a retaliation as Tintin could give - far different from the Captain, of course, who would retort angrily in languages from all corners of the Earth. It did well to convey his discontent, however; and the boy reporter winced as he took a seat across the table.

“Anything good in that paper, Captain? I could certainly do with hearing something nice.”

Life is hard, but never harder than when Mrs. Finch has been keeping an eye on one’s apartment while one has been away chasing up journalism cases - and has put one’s box of teabags on the high shelf.

Bearing in mind one is only five feet tall, of course. And on arriving home, before even closing the door, what one desperately wanted was just a nice cup of tea.

“--Oh, rotten luck. Looks like I’ll have to use the loose-leaf sort we keep for guests until I can decide how to get to that, eh, Snowy...?”

“Oh, I don’t strictly live at Marlinspike! Call me a long-term guest, I suppose - I still keep my apartment in order back at Labrador Road, I just visit the Hall very often and enjoy staying over when the Captain’s happy to have me.”

“I actually started staying for longer spates after we came back from Tibet. That adventure put a lot of things in perspective, you know? I powered through it all so fast that the full force of what happened hit me a day or two after we’d rescued Chang, and I’m rather embarrassed to say that when trauma which should have been spread reasonably thin impacts a person all at once...”

“Well, needless to say, the Captain wasn’t about to let me and Snowy go home alone, so we stayed at the Hall for a few days until I felt a little more steady - and it seems to have become a habit to drop by so often now, almost like it’s home. I can see why you’d think I lived here; I’m only about one more toothbrush away from it!”

Tintin never usually uses such terrible language (such profanity, truly, he ought to blush), but currently his poor old coccyx is piloting his mouth for him! The fractured central step of the grand staircase is the bane of Marlinspike Hall; and that path through the house is used so often and so unthinkingly that there’s never time for a single coat of concrete to dry and have it fixed.

“If only the global newspapers could see me at home, eh, Snowy? Tintin: World Famous Reporter - can take out entire smuggling rings in one fell swoop, but can’t walk down the stairs properly...”

Not quite the Captain’s ideal Bourbon - the sort which comes in whiskey bottles - but the créme-filled chocolate biscuits make Tintin just as happy. Both are ideal for tea, anyway.

But, also, such tea. Tintin supposes the sullying of his ears is a reasonable trade - he’s heard (what he assumes must be, as some exclamations are in languages he’s never encountered) worse from the Captain, after all.

Domestic headcanons!

♆ - The worst kind of neighbour they could have, and how they deal with them.

Tintin’s worst neighbours to date have undoubtedly been the ones who’ve tried to shoot him. It’s unbelievable how easy the current economy makes renting an empty apartment - or a hotel room, more often - to carry out attempted assassination...

Tintin’s usual plan of action is to get out of there as soon as the first bullet misses his head (or the first scent of chloroform penetrates the air) - but the less outright aggressive neighbours, the ones who simply make far too much noise, are a call to just get under the blankets in bed and drown himself in a book. While Tintin is a crack shot at shooting down aeroplanes and sleuthing out criminal rings, he isn’t one for domestic confrontation.

If one becomes enthralled in a story, one can drown out the rest of the world. It’s a good remedy when the neighbours start arguing through the walls.

He’d meant to give it to the lad as a Christmas present, but as he’d been in Liverpool at the time it completely slipped his mind, and he hadn’t even told Nestor about it. And of course yesterday was the best time to give it to the lad as well, but… well, things had happened as they are wont to (especially for them).

So instead he simply leaves the present by the boy’s door, a tag on the handle reading “Happy Birthday Tintin” in his usual cursive, before he went to grab his walking stick and go out for a stroll in the afternoon.

Considering how often the boy’d been shot–and framed, for that matter–a bulletproof case with a lock on it would be useful to the boy.

“Great snakes!”

Tintin had to do a surprisingly graceful little hop to keep himself from tripping when he left his room - his room, officially; that was still hard to believe - and almost bumped against a case sitting out in the hall.

What could this be? The Captain’s? It looked far too spick and span for that; not that his friend’s battered old sea-salt-drenched cases weren’t charming. All Nestor’s things were kept in his own quarters, and they hadn’t been expecting any guests... The Professor’s, perhaps? But then, what would it be doing outside Tintin’s room?

The sleuth, ever on the job, stooped to check the label; letting out a sound of surprise - causing Snowy to come and investigate too; always ready for the slightest out-of-the-ordinary sound from his pet human - when the scratchy, rough cursive indicated the object was meant for him.

“Captain...” He breathed, recognising the handwriting faster than any fleeting thought of the gift being a trap from one of their many enemies (as if they’d be able to penetrate Marlinspike; really; Tintin was dangerous enough when he wasn’t in his own home), switching from stooping to kneeling in order to properly look over the gift; and then giving up and sitting comfortably cross-legged on the carpeted floor of the wide hallway, excitement glittering in blue eyes as he investigated.

An undignified place to settle, yes, but it wasn’t often Tintin got birthday presents. In fact, it wasn’t... Well, ever.

This was his first.
