The Myth of the Female Musician
This is a piece that I wrote a while back about feminism and music writing. I found a home for it in Smith, my universityâs student-run magazine. You can grab print copies from cafes around New Cross, or Goldsmiths SU. Thereâs loads of creative writing in there, and a bunch of other interesting articles.

Sketchbook. I think this will become a petrol girls song and a paper screen print.
This totally has become a Petrol Girls tune!! With "I'M A PROTAGONIIIIIIISSTTTTAAAAHHH" as a massive heavy break down section near the end. The song is about how the film theory of 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl' can sometimes play out in real life, particularly within relationships in an alternative or music community. The song is for anyone who's ever felt like a supporting role in someone else's story.

REVIEW: PETROL GIRLS S/T 7â.
Debut EP from this London four piece featuring Ren Aldridge of Ren Spits At Magpies fame. They tag themselves as âraging feminist hardcoreâ so I was expecting something in the Punch-vein, but theyâre actually surprisingly slow and considered, which makes a nice change. Donât get me wrong, I love feminist powerviolence as much as anyone else, but sometimes itâs nice to be able to hear lyrics like these clearly. Opening track Restless has a sound that comes off a bit like early Computers stuff, but with the odd Gnarwolves-esque riff whereas the other two are all Team Dresch, right down to the vocal harmonies. Itâs perfect. Fucking perfect. More bands need to sound like Team Dresch. For some reason Gnarwolves come springing to mind as a comparison more often than seems likely â theyâve just got that same mixture of melodic hardcore contrasted with that heavier sense of recklessness that sometimes just cuts loose unexpectedly.
But Petrol Girls are saying something much more fucking important - itâs the lyrics that are the raging part. No more considered critiques, just rage â make me howl, question all authority, protest is dead. Fuck yeah. Petrol Girls are fucking pissed, and actually reading the lyrics feels pretty essential. I wouldnât expect anything else from a band fronted by Ren, who is fast becoming one of the most important voices in the scene, and someone I always enjoy reading stuff by. You need to check this out, basically. I canât wait for more from them, or for the chance to catch them live â I canât get enough of this goddamn EP.

Tom Meagher: My wife, Jill Meagher, was murdered by a man who can easily be described as the sum of all evils â but we should not fall pray to the âmonster mythâ
This is brave, constructive and precise. I donât think Iâd have the perspective to be as clear and moral.
Sneaked our Petrol Girls test print Tshirt into the @houseofastbury shoot. Strong.

House of Astbury & Petrol Girls Band T-shirt collaboration.
This collaboration for a run of special edition Petrol Girls band T-shirts came about as a result of most of us living together (with Ren both screen printing for HoA and fronting Petrol Girls). The T-shirt features a HoA signature lower back reflective text print (to catch car headlights from under your rucksack when cycling!) and incorporates reflective ink into the design on the front â literally setting it alight!
Petrol Girls are a feminist hardcore band named after a loose translation of Les Pétroleuses, mythical women of the Paris Commune that allegedly made Molotov Cocktails from glass milk bottles to throw at their enemies, hence the band logo. The band have just released their debut EP, which was recorded DIY in our house in Peckham.
