This is a very very random message probably - but I saw this pretty amazing post of a mural in a library that is all birds AND the artist added a Canadian Goose! And after joining the Canadian-Goose-is-Ilya-Rozanov's-Spirit-Animal fanclub I've become rather fond of them. oh wow, thank you so much for letting me know!! i'm so glad you enjoyed it. i know it's been a while since i've updated (and much longer since i've regularly worked on that one) but i did have a lot of fun writing it and diving into all these complicated family dynamics and explore the magic system that i would have liked to see in got.

haha that list really takes me back. crazy to think how many fandoms i've been in (and i mean those are just some of the ones i published something in) and how many i still love to revisit occasionally.

first of all, apologies for taking so long to answer. second, when i got your ask i had never once read a shane WAG fic. of course instead of telling you that i went down a rabbit hole for three weeks to catch up on this beautiful trope and haven't come up for air since.

i 100% blame you for that (affectionate), by the way. don't worry, i've loved every second of it.

so, without further rambling, here they are:

My favorite Shane-Hollander-joins-the-Boston-WAG-chat fic recs

crown jewels of this trope:

not "your" anything by 24begaydonothing81: WIP. this has all the fluffy, humorous vibes I want from a WAG chat fic. one of my all time favorites. also canon-divergence (i think) bc there is actual relationship development that wouldn't fit in the canon timeline. plus the boston team joins in eventually!! also includes a coming out, though no identity reveal (yet) which makes the chats even funnier.

Jane Adapts Nonnaturally Expeditiously by shanessed: WIP. fantastic story that really gives the WAGs their own voices and relationships, which makes the fic feel so grounded in a real 'verse, something i think isn't always easy to accomplish in a texting fic. also love how supportive they are as they take on the herculean task of getting shane and ilya to drop their denial early. also the WAG catch on fairly early in this which i like because smart characters (yay!!) but also have mixed feelings about because shane doesn't know that yet. curious to see how that will be resolved.

Jane Doe elected Prime WAG by Driftingalongtheshore: WIP. this is pure comedic genius. i am in awe of the amount of thought the author has put into fleshing the characters of these women out. also love, love, love that there are stories developing beyond what we know from canon (even if i wouldn't count it as canon-divergent yet, too early to tell), with escalating prank wars, sponsorships, various health issues (iykyk) and more. also the WAG theories on jane's identity are hilarious. very curious to see how some of the canon events get handled but even if we never get there, it's forth reading.

Jane Has Been Added To The Chat by What_I_Wrote_In_Ink: complete. so lovely, gives everything this trope promises. in particular supportive friends while shane (and ilya) figure out their shit. canon-compliant to the tv show as far as i can tell.

Added: Jane by @pirateshipping: complete. great short story about shane finding supportive friends in the WAG chat. canon-compliant. includes the identity reveal, which i adore.

First Time WAG by DadMight: complete. really funny (both the WAGs and shane). shane discovers the joy of talking about his sex life and asking for relationship advice and i am 100% here for it. also seeing the fallout of shane's conversations in the form of ilya venting to his team makes it that much more hilarious. also includes the identity reveal.

Boston Babes by a_local_queer: WIP. love how shane takes 1.2 seconds to seize the power granted to him to ruin ilya's life (read: take care of his boyfriend from afar). shane being determined to become the best WAG is absolutely the energy i need in my life.

different twists and takes on this trope that i adore:

Jane and Lily's Guide to Psychological Warfare by Anonymous: WIP. love the premise on this: unlike most WAG chat fics where either the bears/raiders steal "jane"'s number or ilya adds shane to fuck with him, this time they are both informed and very aware of the choices they are making. i love me some agency and the boys looking at their teams going 'fuck that' and deciding to strategically use the WAG chat powers as well as the wider internet for the greater good of forcing their teams to become more queer-friendly is just *chefs kiss*

Boston Hoes (Don't Know Shane's Game) by @thefeistyrogue: oneshot. short and funny. i liked the take that these boston WAGs aren't as welcoming and i'm getting the feeling that shane could be his true, bitchy self with them.

Added by Mistake (Stayed on Purpose) by Yul_Cy: WIP. the premise but instead of humor and crack make it angst. only 4 chapters in and i can already tell that this one is going to hurt. unlike most of my recs, this is less fluff and a whole lot more angst. i really feel for shane and just know this is gonna get ugly before it gets better. but the author has assured us that shane will be okay eventually, so i'm confident the pain is gonna be worth it.

softly, stepping forward by @apileofashandember: WIP. has only just started but i've added it to this list because i really love the premise of shane being the one asking to get added to the WAG chat here. (yes, my agency kink is showing. again.) not to mention the delightful twist with lorie. can't wait to see where it goes!

I think a key part of what makes Shane and Ilya work so well is that Ilya, who has had to fend for himself pretty much most of his life, who has had to navigate living on a different continent with no familial support, who has had to BE the familial support for a family that doesn't love him, loves it when Shane does the Big Grownup Things™. Things like when Shane handles most of the paperwork and navigating the government red tape it takes to set up their foundation. When Shane buys a couple of properties to rent out so that if the shit hits the fan and they're found out and everything falls apart, they're still getting an income. When Shane takes the cars to be fitted with snow tires in the winter. When Shane sets up lists and lists of questions the media might throw at them and includes good media-trained answers to each so that Ilya can memorise them so he doesn't feel like he's constantly fielding curveballs. He helps him with the paperwork for his visa. He fixes what's broken around the house or he calls the right person to get it fixed. Ilya doesn't feel like he has to hold the weight of the world's responsibilities on his shoulders anymore.

And Shane, who grew up with a helicopter mom who meant well but made him feel like a child well into his 20s, a mom who set up his career for him and who still manages almost every aspect of his career, he loves that Ilya trusts him with the Big Grownup Things™. He loves that Ilya trusts him to handle all of the paperwork. He loves that Ilya trusts him to make decisions that will support them. He loves that Ilya lets him help with the tasks he hates – that he trusts him with the boring stuff. Getting to feel like he's looking after his household and family makes him feel very manly and adult. And with so much of the man he thought he should be shifting to make way for the man he actually is, this is something small he can cling to.

Shane in Boston but make it Outsider POV

okay hear me out. so i've spent a lot of time with my own personal fanon boston bears team lately thanks to the maximum confusion some believability 'verse and something occurred to me: i love shane-goes-to-boston fics. you probably know i love shane-goes-to-boston fics. but you know what i also need? an outsider POV on shane-goes-to-boston fics.

give me connor almost falling out of his chair when he finds out that his team has traded for the shane hollander.

(what has montréal been smoking? must be some drugs because shane. freaking. hollander.)

and look, connor can be cool about this. it's not like he had this guy's poster on his wall at one point not that long in the past and now is expected to be normal and have Normal Feelings about coexisting in the same locker room as hollander.

(shane freaking hollander!!)

he makes fun of roz' face because his captain's expression is objectively hilarious. he gossips chirps with the rest of the team about why montréal let hollander go, why to boston, why now. he theorizes with carmichael how long roz will last before he kills hollander and whether they will give him an alibi when the time comes. one rookie argues that maybe hollander will be the one to get away with murder and after a lot of laughter and some uneasy glances the majority concurs that, actually, that might be true. you know, normal stuff.

(SHANE. freaking. hollander.)

then hollander shows up and. connor doesn't know what he expected. hollander is objectively terrifying on the ice and continues to prove that. he doesn't chirp anyone except roz but they don't seem liable to actually commit murder. not in front of witnesses at least. so this is already going better than st. simon bet it would. there is just something off in the way hollander watches them. all of them but roz especially. and look. connor doesn't want to look a gift horse in the mouth. especially not this one.

(shane??? freaking??? hollander???)

but. it won't leave him alone. and connor is bad at leaving things alone once that itch in the back of his head starts acting up. so maybe he reaches out to a guy. one who has been freshly traded to montréal at the start of the season because Eternal Enmity aside people get traded all the time and so of course connor knows someone there. someone he likes even. someone who likes connor too because he is a likeable guy and people tend to tell him things when he asks. which is how connor learns that hollander is gay.

(shane! freaking! hollander!)

and okay that is a bit of a mindfuck, given the rose landry of it all. but. look. connor is a noisy asshole but he isn't that type of asshole, alright. he doesn't give a fuck, you know, once he's had some hours of staring blindly into the middle distance and suddenly remembering a lot of RPG stuff he's seen online in a whole new way. but the thing is. the thing is hollander is nice. he's polite but not polished once you get him outside the camera views. he doesn't laugh at the rookies who blush and embarrass themselves in front of him those first few practices. (he doesn't notice, actually, but that might be a mercy given the way kane skated into their goalie that one time.) he seems like a robot playing at being human right up until they are in the middle of a heated argument and then suddenly hollander drops one little comment in such a calm tone of voice that it takes connor an entire three seconds to process the joke. who knew the guy has a sense of humor? is that even allowed??

(shane. freaking. hollander?!?!)

so connor likes hollander. not, you know, like that but as a team mate. and maybe a friend. he's managed to make hollander smile (3 times!!) which is more than anyone else on the team can claim, so clearly they are destined to be great friends. and because they are gonna be great friends and because hollander is funny and bitchy but often quiet in that self-contained way of his and because jean from montréal said 'it didn't go well' in a tone that implies an ocean of unsaid things, maybe connor is feeling a little protective. maybe he's starting to side-eye his other team mates. trying to remember how many of them have thrown slurs around and how many of them might have meant it. and because he's watching closely he also notices the way his captain is watching hollander to.

(shane. freaking. hollander.)

and listen, roz is a good captain. great even. connor loves playing with him and he genuinely likes roz off the ice too. but that doesn't mean he's blind to the way roz looks at hollander differently. touches hollander differently too. and hollander never draws attention to it, other than to tense, to shrug it off and step back, creating space, but well, he wouldn't, would he? he's new and his last team clearly didn't have either common decency nor common sense and the worst part is that connor isn't 100% sure that this team, their team, will be different. not when he's starting to suspect that maybe roz knows too. and is acting like that. pushing and prodding hollander like he wants to see how long it takes to make him snap.

the realization hits at four am and has connor sitting up in a cold sweat, heart racing, because of course it does. his captain is harassing hollander.

not to defend either shane or ilya but. BUT. neither one of them can read each other's mind. doesn't matter how long they've known each other or how much they love each other or how great the sex is. they are not unlimited god-like 3rd person POV purposefully tripping over their own feet to get a laugh from the audience. they are two EXTREMELY limited first person POV who are very unreliable narrators with only a vague idea of what genre they're in and zero understanding of what that means for them and yes, they do absolutely not agree on the genre. (they are both wrong.)
