Here's something you don't see every day - a donkey skeleton giving birth!

Tragically, the donkey and it's offspring passed while giving birth. Toby Boch, our articulator, has reassembled the pair of skeletons how they were found.

We decided to immortalize this snapshot of life (and death) as a permanent exhibit for our museum.

Perspective

How I viewed  4th-5th year vet students back in pre-vet and first year: Gods among men. They must be perfect students, I mean….. these people made it through ANATOMY. Quiver before them, for they know their shit and will enter the workforce ready to fucking go. 

How I now look at myself, a 5th year vet student: Oh no. They’re probably going to let me graduate in a year. Who let this happen???? I’m not in a position to provide veterinary care. I am but a lowly potato. A lowly FOETUS potato. I can barely care for myself. What the fuck even is a horse? Send help.

I’ve officially been working with wolves for more than seven years and I must say I completely understand why cavemen risked life and limb for these kisses 💕

Wolves are such an important keystone species, it’s almost impossible to overstate how influential they are in shaping ecosystems. If that’s not reason enough to to care about their conservation, just remember that wolves gave humans the best gift we ever received- our dogs!

I live in the USA and shock collars have always bothered me. I see them fairly often on dogs in Petco. I had to dogsit a family pet and was handed the remote to his shock collar to, in their words, keep him calm. He was a puppy and the reason he had it was because "he jumps and pulls on the leash". Puppies... do that??

Where shock collars are freely available there seems to be this persistent belief that if you can just be tough/fierce/scary/strong/alpha enough then the animal will ‘submit’ and have perfect behavior. This isn’t the case, and it’s super confusing for an animal to be surrounded by strong ‘DONT DO THAT’ messages without any positive ‘Do This’ messages, it can only guess at what you want.

Sometimes they stop trying and they exhibit learned helplessness, where they essentially do nothing because they don’t understand how to void the punishment. In a human this might look like depression, but people might mistake this behavior as being ‘a good/obedient dog’ instead. This is because the animal stopped showing the behaviour the human didn’t like, but it is not a good state for the dog to be in.

This is actually called a sheep cyclone and it happens because sheep don’t have a hierarchy. In most herds, whichever animal is the leader will sense danger and take off running. The rest of the herd takes it’s cues from the leader and follows. Sheep, on the other hand, don’t have a leader. If the flock runs, they run, and they follow whatever fluffy tail happens to be in front of them. Usually, this works out fine for the sheep. Occasionally, however, the sheep in the front starts following the fluffy tail of the sheep in the back so the whole flock ends up running in circles, going nowhere fast.

This is, to my understanding, excactly WHY we have both herding and livestock guardian dogs.  Sheep are… really amazingly dumb most of the time.  

Then, once in a while, you get one sheep that’s Entirely Too Cunning and that’s when all hell breaks loose.
