A Front

My thought of the day is how much people really reveal themselves to others. I’ve never been one for fronting, I’ve always been a heart-on-the-sleeve guy. If you can’t be honest with yourself, you have no hope of being honest with anyone else.

It’s always interesting to look back on friendships or relationships you’ve had, trying to figure out how much of that person was a front, a lie, and how much was true. Maybe they didn’t always tell you how they truly felt, maybe they lied about things to keep you happy.

The truth is we all subconsciously present ourselves a certain way depending on who we’re speaking to. It’s involuntary, and I suppose that makes it difficult to control. But I would always strive to be honest and true to myself and to others in situations where it isn’t involuntary.

Breakups: The Last Phase

I’m so relieved that I’m at a point where I can say I am over my ex-girlfriend. That line itself is very hazy, but I suppose what I mean is that I no longer get emotional about her or the breakup.

It’s more than reaching a stage of acceptance, it’s being able to look back at the times we had together with a level head. You’re able to feel good about and fondly remember the good memories you had while also recognising why the relationship failed without getting upset or emotional. You’re able to see it from both sides and evaluate it rationally.

I do sometimes still think of her, but those moments are fleeting and I don’t get anxious or upset through them. I suppose the next challenge is to reach a position where I’d be ready to love again, but I’m not worried about that at all. It’s the end of the line for this phase of my life, and the start of a new one. 

I can honestly say I haven’t been so happy in a long time.

True Love

True, deep love is a really strange emotion that not all of us even get to experience. It can make you feel absolutely euphoric and yet simultaneously totally vulnerable. It makes you do weird things too. It really does blind you. You stop seeing your friends and you can only see good in your partner. You miss the warning signs that you eventually pick up later in hindsight. And when that love is broken, it kills you. It takes something away from you that you can get back. You are forced to rebuild your little world.

When you’re heartbroken, it's easy to be cynical about love. Sometimes you wish you had never felt it. For me, I’m glad I’ve been on this emotional rollercoaster. I’ve managed to find a meaningful and fulfilling life without her. And because I know what it feels like to fall so deeply in love, the next time it happens, whether it's in a few weeks, months or years, I’ll know what I’m in for...
